An nsX BuilT for A superhero

ts sunrise at Hondas test track outside of dusty California City in the Mojave Desert when
the plain white, unmarked semi pulls in. We know whats coming. Were here to drive Tony
Starks personal acura nSX Roadster, the only one like it in the world.
That truck came from Stark Industries, someone cracks as the crew opens the trailer.
It could be powered by that thingie in Iron Mans chest.
Ten the car rolls out onto the ramp and no one says a word. Te Acura NSX may just be a movie
prop for the new superhero action blockbuster Te Avengers, which opens May 4, but its gor-
geous. Stop and stare, devastatingly, truly gorgeous.
Watching it move of the truck in slow motion is like watching Ursula Andress come out of the
ocean in Dr. No. Or Phoebe Cates walk out of the swimming pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont
High. Or Megan Fox get of her motorcycle in Transformers. It could only be better if it were
backlit and there had been an Aerosmith ballad playing in the background.
sTArk rAving nsX
Its not the 2015 Acura NSX, which has been making news on the international auto show cir-
cuit since January, but it looks enough like it to fool most people. Nope, this is the Acura NSX
that never will be, but is. Its a leak over from the parallel universe thats run by Marvel Comics.
And were as shocked as you to learn that its role in Te Avengers is just a cameo in the fnal few
seconds of the flm.
Tere arent any headlights or outside door handles or a roof, but its not merely a cobbled-
together movie prop either.

Weve driven enough movie cars to know that, more often than often, theyre beat to Hell and
barely ambulatory. Not this time. Unlike many movie cars, Te Avengers Acura NSX Roadster
wasnt built to perform stunts. Terefore it wasnt beat on. Te script never asked this car to do a
single burnout, Rockford or jump.
Avoiding such antics means this car remains in show-ready condition. But because it wasnt engi-
neered for such extreme driving, it also means its a bit fragile. In fact, the NSX Roadster rides so
low itll scrape its nose running over loose change and needs to be unloaded from the plain white
truck with kid gloves...and another pair of kid gloves over those kid gloves.
Te doors open easily and feel
solid like a real NSX. Once
theyre open, however, what
awaits the driver is a throwback
interior barely changed from
1990. Tats because, under
its skin, Te Tony Stark Acura
NSX Roadster is really a 1991
Acura NSX.
Since the interior wasnt get-
ting screen time, there was no
reason to screw around with it.
With the exception of the Pro-
car seats, some Iron Man red
paint on the center console and a hunk of electrical tape where the top center vents should be, the
interior is untouched right down to the tape deck.
We knew it would have to be reliable for flming and we couldnt come up with anything that
would be more reliable than an original NSX, explains Dave Marek, division director for Auto
Design at Honda. Dont complain about them chopping up an NSX. How cheesy would it have
been if they had used a Fiero?
So the base for Starks movie car is a 1991 Acura NSX similar to Inside Lines current long-termer.
However, where ILs machine has around 53,000 miles on its clock, the car upon which Starks
was built shows a stunning 252,000 on its odometer. We didnt want a car that was too nice to
rip apart, said Marek.
sTArk MeAsures
Mareks designers were already deep into developing the NSX Concept that was shown at this
years North American International Auto Show in Detroit when Te Avengers Acura NSX as-
signment was handed to them. It was natural that that concept would defne the styling themes
used for Starks ride. Its not an exact copy, says Marek, but its defnitely inspired by the Con-
cept car.
Tat inspiration is obvious, but in some ways the movie car is even more beautiful than the Con-
cept. Starks car has a more gently rounded nose and a more pronounced dip behind the front
wheels to the doors. Te tail is more rounded, too, with a voluptuous taper the Concept lacks.
And, of course, Starks car is missing a roof.

Although it was designed by Mareks team at Hon-
da HQ in Torrance, California, the car was built
by the Trans FX prototype shop in Oxnard, Cali-
fornia. Tats where the resin and fberglass body
was formed, equipped with custom-fabricated
LED taillights and covered in the same shade of
red as Iron Mans suit. I know it doesnt look like
the same red, explains Marek, but I think with
the movie lights and such it looks brighter.

off The TrAiler
Te familiar driving environment is such that
for a moment you can be fooled into believing
its just another NSX. It gets even more familiar
when the ignition key is turned and the famil-
iar sound of the 270-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6 is
added to the mix a little louder in this open
car than it is in an NSX coupe. Even after all
those miles, the Stark NSXs fve-speed manual transmission feels solid as it shifts into 1st gear.
seconD geAr, however, woulD hAve To wAiT.
In deference to the Stark NSXs compromised structure, that it was engineered to run only up to
30 mph and its near-future life as a promotional item for the flm, Acura asks that we keep our
driving speed to under 20 mph. Since its Acuras car, its PR guy is standing right there and theres
a severe vibration in the structure, we oblige. So what we can say is that, up to about 20 mph, the
Stark NSX feels and drives like the NSX that it is.
With no top or side windows, Te Avengers Acura NSX has better visibility than an unmodifed
NSX. Te front windshield is larger and more steeply raked than standard, but the driver can still
locate the front corners easily.
onTo The roAD
Te Stark cars 245/35R18 front Hankook tires are a big chunk wider than the 205/50R15s that
were standard on the 1991 NSX. Add the 2-inch-lower ride height and youve got severely re-
stricted steering angles. Te steering circle of this car is nearly in geosynchronous orbit so huge
that when you turn it around you have to worry about hitting communications satellites. Tat
said, though the steering is heavier than stock, at our low speeds it seemed talkative enough.
Out back, the 255/35R20 rear Hankooks also represent a big step up in size from the standard
225/50R16s, but clearance doesnt seem to be a problem. Ten again, there arent many potholes
in the test track to really test clearances and we arent running through corners quickly enough to
load the suspension.

Purely for aesthetic reasons, the Stark NSX runs new, oversize brakes with detailed rotors and
calipers. In non-panic stops from upward of 17 mph, they feel pretty good.
Even an NSX with a quarter-million on its clock and some of its structure hacked away is still a great
car. Given time and a budget to chase after the Stark NSXs bugs and glitches, this thing could be an
epic, street-driven roadster. But its more likely destined for a spot inside the Honda Museum.
BuilT To sTAr
For a vehicle constructed only to survive a few feeting moments of screen time, the Stark Acura
NSX is beautifully crafted. We found the base car in Arizona, recalls Rick Bordanaro the vice
president of business development at Trans FX. We just needed one that was straight and com-
plete for the project. Im pretty sure we paid something like $18,000 or $20,000 for it. Ten we
few a guy out to Arizona and he drove it back to California. No one at Acura will share how
much was spent transforming the car into Starks ride.
Te base car was so straight that Trans FX was able to remove the bodywork, index the car on one
of their fve axis milling machines, cover the car in big blocks of foam and then carve out the new
body shape right there on the car. Te whole aft end is milled foam, while the nose is mostly
fberglass. Its less fragile in real life than we assumed it would be.
As such, this car is yet another testament to how great a car the original NSX was and is. When
the next NSX gets here in three or so years, Te Avengers Acura NSX will be one more element
in a heritage it needs to which it must live up.
After a day with the movie car, were convinced that Starks NSX is one of the most impressive
movie cars ever built. Its right up there with the Batmobile and the Eleanor Mustang from Gone
in Sixty Seconds. Not the original, the one with Nic Cage.
Honestly, it was tough to see it loaded back onto that plain white truck. If were lucky its destined
for greater things in Iron Man 3 and Te Avengers 2 and whatever other movies that might come

brands arent new: Dodge had its Tomahawk and Chrysler, the ME Four-
Twelve. But when the Jeep Hurricane blew onto the 2005 North American
International Auto Show stage, it raised the bar for the Jeep brand.
Hurricane represents the continued success of bold concept vehicles for the brands as a means
of demonstrating Chrysler Groups creative and mechanical expertise. For example, powerful
powertrain performance is an understatement considering the Hurricane is not just HEMI-
equipped, but HEMI squared. Tere are two 5.7-liter HEMI engines in the vehicle: one in
the front and one in the back. Both engines deliver 335 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque - a
total of 670 hp and 740 lb-ft of torque.
ThaT Jeep GoTTa hemi
? Yeah ... Two!

Can you have responsible excess? To test the theory, we equipped both HEMI engines in the
Jeep Hurricane with the Chrysler Group Multi-Displacement System (MDS). Depending on
the drivers needs, the Hurricane can be powered by 4-, 8-, 12- or 16-cylinders. All of that
translates into buckets of torque for climbing obstacles other 4x4 vehicles cant even compre-
hend. In addition, it has the power and traction to move from 0-60 in less than fve seconds.

extreme enthusiasts Jeep vehicles in form and of-road capability, but is a unique interpretation of Jeep
design. Simply stated, it is the extreme example for the Jeep brand.

trolled four-wheel torque distribution system. Te front and rear suspension is short/long arm
independent with 20 inches of travel, controlled by coilover shocks with remote reservoirs.
Te vehicle has 14.3 inches of ground clearance, and incredible approach/departure angles of
64.0 /86.7 degrees. Tese are nearly vertical angles - combined with 37-inch tall tires, so the
Hurricane wont meet much that it cant
climb. Te Hurricane is the only vehicle
on the auto-show circuit that provides
its own turnable feature. Te vehicle
features a turn radius of absolutely zero,
thanks to skid and toe steer capability:
the ability to turn both front and rear
tires inward. In addition, the vehicle
features two modes of automated four-
wheel steering. Traditional, with the
rear tires turning in the opposite direc-
tion of the front to reduce the turning
circle. As well as an innovation targeted
to of-road drivers: the vehicle can turn
all four wheels in the same direction
for crab steering, llowing the vehicle to
move sideways.
Out in the wilderness, changing di-
rection in minimal space can mean
the diference between an afternoon
of adventure and a distress call back to
the trailhead, Creed said. Te multi-
mode four-wheel steering system on
Jeep Hurricane is designed to ofer en-
thusiasts the next level of performance
and unexpected maneuverability.
Te one-piece body is shaped of struc-
tural carbon fber, and forms the chassis
ratjer than a traditional frame. Te sus-
pension and powertrain are mounted directly to the body. An aluminum spine runs the length
of the body, connecting the underside and to function as a complete skid plate system.
Te lightweight with high strength design boasts functional appearance. Jeep Hurricane is an
honest, minimalist approach to its design augmented with the Jeep signature seven-slot grille,
two seats and no doors.

IRVINE, Calif., November 18, 2010 - Making its
North American debut at the 2010 Los Angeles
Auto Show alongside Kia Motors frst-ever hybrid
for the U.S. the 2011 Optima Hybrid (arriving
early next year) the all-electric Kia POP concept
vehicle provides a glimpse into the future of ur-
ban transportation and takes its inspirations from
outside the world of automobile design. Less than
10 feet in length, the chrome-colored three-seater
was created by Kias European Design Center in
Frankfurt under the direction of Peter Schreyer,
chief design ofcer, Kia Motors Corporation and
can travel up to 100 miles on a single charge. Te POP comes to the U.S. shortly after the Ray
plug-in hybrid concept, which was developed at Kias Southern California design studio and
introduced at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, and is the result of Kia Motors expanding green car
investments and research and development eforts around the world.

and reduced manufacturing complexity. Capable of reaching a top speed of 87 miles per hour
and completely recharging in six hours, the fully-electric, zero-emissions concept vehicle with a
50kW, 190Nm motor ofers a range of up to 100 miles.

recently increased
in Texas under House Bill
1353 and House Bill 1201.

discusses the new laws
and the potential criminal
implication the traffc laws
may have on drivers.
Te new speed limit laws in Texas could potentially lead to an increased number of criminal
trafc charges throughout the state, stated Richard C. McConathy, a criminal defense lawyer in
the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex.
Te 82nd Texas legislature recently enacted several new trafc laws, including HB 1353 and HB
1201, which both increased the speed limits on many roads in Texas. Although the speed limit
laws became efective in September and June, a study must be conducted by the Texas Depart-
ment of Transportation (TxDOT) before the speed limits across roads in Texas will increase.
Dallas criminal defense lawyer Richard C. McConathy analyzes the new speed limit laws and the
impact these limits may have on criminal trafc ofenses in Texas.
Te most recent Texas speed limit law was passed this September, but Texas law enforcement
ofcers have been told to keep enforcing the old speed limits until TxDOT is able to change
speed limit signs throughout the state. Tis means an individual who believes the speed limit has
already changed could be charged with a trafc ofense, such as excessive speeding or even reck-
less driving, stated Richard C. McConathy, a Fort Worth trafc crime defense attorney.
House Bill 1353 changed section 545.352(b) of the Texas Transportation Code by eliminating
a diferent speed limit at night. Te speed will now remain at 70 miles per hour (mph) instead
of decreasing from 70 mph to 65 mph on many highways at night. Additionally, the text of HB
1353 changes the maximum speed limits allowed in Texas from 70 miles per hour to 75 miles
per hour on highways in the state.
HB 1353 only permits the Texas Department of Transportation to increase the states speed
limits upon a speed study showing the new speeds are reasonable and safe for that part of the
highway system.
Additionally, HB 1201, which was enacted in June, amended the Texas Transportation Code

speed limit laws, but the changes are not applicable until new speed limits signs have been
posted and a speed study has been conducted. Tis will lead to an increase in many inadvertent
criminal trafc ofenses, such as vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, driving with a sus-
pended license, and excessive speeding.
Te Texas Department of Transportation expects to have all speed studies conducted by the
beginning of 2013 to determine if higher speed limits are reasonable and safe, in addition to
changing any posted speed limit signs in Texas.

been signifcantly enhanced from the previous
version and boasts a new user experience, faster
navigation and innovative new features. Google
Android and Apple iOS users can download the
app today from Google Play or Apple iTunes,
respectively. A Blackberry version is also in de-
velopment.
Blue Link is an innovative telematics solution
from Hyundai that combines safety, service and
infotainment into a complete package. Blue
Link is powered by Ageros next-generation
telematics platform, which ofers a fexible ar-
chitecture that supports multi-modal interfaces
for vehicle owners. Tis improved app demon-
strates one of Ageros core capabilities: develop-
ing customized user experience interfaces, from
end to end, on behalf of our automotive OEM clients, said Tom Metzger, senior vice president

Customer feedback and real-world usability testing played a key role in
the development of the all-new Blue Link mobile app. We looked at
how our customers use their Smartphones to enhance various aspects
of their lives, said Michael Deitz, senior group manager, Blue Link.
We wanted to design an app that allows them to enhance their Hyun-
dai ownership experience through Blue Link. Navigation elements are
designed to reduce the steps needed to access Blue Link features and
services by leveraging familiar Smartphone touch commands. A new
swipe carousel allows users to quickly access core features without need-
ing to take several steps. Shortcut buttons allow one-touch access to
vehicle diagnostics and POIs while the main menu allows one-fnger
access to all features within the application.
remoTe aCCeSS FeaTureS
Blue Link Essentials subscribers can access a number of key vehicle
functions remotely from the mobile application without the need to
be in the proximity of the vehicle. Remote Door Lock or unlock allows for remote control and
convenience from virtually anywhere. Remote Horn & Lights allows the subscriber to remotely
activate the horn and lights. Remote Lights allows subscriber to remotely activate the vehicle
lights only. Remote Vehicle Start, which has been expanded to include more Hyundai models,
allows the subscriber to remotely start their vehicle, an especially convenient feature in cold states
during winter months. Vehicles equipped with push-button start and automatic or dual-clutch
transmissions are supported for Remote Vehicle Start. For added security, all remote access fea-
tures require the vehicle PIN to be entered prior to the command being sent.

iscerning sports compact drivers not only want their engines to sing, they
want them to roar. Ford engineers made sure the new Focus ST does both,
with the help of a new twist on an existing technology.
Ford engineers added a special sound tube called a sound symposer to amplify the throaty fre-
quencies enthusiasts crave in performance cars. Engineers worked to naturally amplify the specifc
lower range of engine frequencies found between 200 and 450 Hz that are most pleasing to perfor-
mance enthusiasts through the use of a composite paddle that vibrates with intake air pulses.
While the sound tube concept has been used on Mustang in the past, the sound symposer used
in Focus ST is unique because of its electronically controlled valve that opens and closes based
on driver inputs engine speed, accelerator pedal position and gear selection. In lower gears,
the valve is mapped more aggressively, while in higher gears the efect is dialed back to enable
quieter cruising. Tis isnt possible with conventional, passive sound tubes. Part of the reason
Ford made these changes is that on Focus ST, for the frst time, the symposer is attached directly
to the intake manifold (as opposed to between the manifold and air intake).
For ST drivers, its not enough to have a car that is fast or feels fast. It also has to sound fast,
says Christopher Myers, Air Induction System engineer. Part of this is the design of the exhaust,
but we went further and engineered the symposer both to dial up the nice sounds the EcoBoost
delivers under the hood but dial back the interior sound volumes at part throttle.
Te turbo gives us great power across the rev range, but it presents a special challenge from a
sound perspective as it absorbs much of the beautiful engine music, Myers adds. Te symposer
helps us bring the throaty sounds that drivers love.

Te secret to getting this right was developing the perfect paddle to naturally amplify the STs
great engine sound. Ford engineers tested several diferent paddles. Eventually, the supplier de-
veloped a paddle with the correct stifness that yielded the best acoustic response and ultimately,
the best futter and low-end frequency sound.
An international team from suppliers of the intake manifold, battery tray, electrical hardware
and software, and electrical connectors came together with Ford to accelerate development of the
symposer. All in all, 30 engineers from fve countries had to balance NVH, materials, manufac-
turing and assembly considerations to bring the symposer to life.
Te sound symposer gives the Focus ST an aural split personality, says Lisa Schoder, Ford
Focus ST Marketing manager. In everyday driving, the car is composed and refned. But under
full throttle, we unleash the sonic hounds. Its a beauty and a beast.
Among the more visible options will be the Tangerine Scream metallic color that will be ofered
exclusively on Focus ST as well as race-inspired Recaro seats with matching color accents.
