F1 2011 Setups

These are my setups from the game F1 2011 that I used during the races in the F1 2011 league on XBOX360 on Racedepartment.com. Each page is gonna feature 5 setups, my qualifying and finishing position in the race and some comments on the conditions and afterthought. It's not gonna be long as this mainly thought to be reference material for fellow league members and myself. Be aware that I raced with the Williams car and hence all these setups are tailored for this car. If you are not driving a Williams, or for any other reason, like driving style, weather or other conditions, you will find, that you cannot copy these setups and expect perfect results from the get-go. Instead these setups should be considered only as reference and as a starting point to develop your own setup (or not, if you don't want to in wich case you might still learn just from driving with these setups, particularily the later ones, what works and what doesn't, and how driving style and technique varies over every driver). I must also inform you, that I'm not a professional at creating setups by any means. I learned a lot during the course of driving in the league and this will reflect in the setups in the way that they are pretty bad at the beginning of the season and get better with each race. I will highlight good and bad setups in the comments section under each setup. From my results in qualifying and the races you might think my qualifying setups are worse than my race setups. This is not the case, I as a driver am just not good in qualifying and generally perform better under race conditions. All the setups are qualifying setups. How to transform them into a race setup I'll tell after all the setups have been shown. The same goes for wet-weather setups. But let's now get on with the setups:

Australia: Qualifying was wet, this was the sole reason I got pole (my only one this season). What I'd look at for changes: Brakes (more pressure, less size) Higher Wings Malaysia: A track I usually perform pretty well at. Should've been a win if the Safety Car didn't get in the way. What I'd look at for changes: again, brakes and wings China: This is the only setup I didn't use in the league. My actualy setup was horrid, especially through T5. This is a really good setup, I wish I'd had it in the race. What I'd look at for changes: Higher Wings Turkey: Another really bad setup. Only finished 2nd, because of strategy. What I'd look at for changes: Whatever gets you well through T8 (rear spring, rear camber) Also, higher wings Spain: Sadly had to retire the car because of lag issues. Should've been a good race. Wouldn't change anything big.

Monaco: Setup worked quite well, but I just had a bad day. Monaco with a controller isn't easy either. What I'd look at for changes: Brakes are carefully asessed actually, so wouldn't change them Nothing particular, really Canada: My first win, also a rainy qualy session ment I qualifyed well. Nothing particular to change, possibly look at the front ARB as it's quite important here. Europe: Missing quite some laptime here, no idea where to get it though. Was quite a while back from the leader in the race, so might need an overhaul altogether. For a big overhaul I'd start looking at springs, ARBs and camber. ARBs should be the favourite again on this left-right heavy track. Great Britain: Again, not my best setup, but should've finished second but sadly disconnected. This track is a nightmare for me setup-wise, so can't tell what I'm missing. Germany: My home race, a track I like and a good setup as well. This is the first setup I'd call "really good". It was a breakthrough for me, finally understanding ARBs, and being on pace with the fastest driver of the league. Germany was the time my setups started getting way better.

Hungary: The second win, and a setup that was up for it as well. Belgium: Where did the pace go? Spa certainly is a nice track. But doesn't really fit me for some reason. Nearly managing open DRS through Eau Rouge, but that was about it. What I'd look at for changes: Springs ARBs The usual suspects when you don't know what's going wrong. Italy: Can't evaluate this one sadly. A rain affected race and sub-par strategy ment I struggled all the time. One thing I can say though: What I'd look at for changes: Brakes! Never got my braking right, for T1 and T4. Singapore: Went well, just some guys were way faster. The solution: What I'd look at for changes: Springs Japan: I've got no recollection of this race at all, sorry.

Korea: As simple as a setup gets. Worked from the get-go and got me the win. India: Hard to evaluate, as it rained half the race. Considering I recovered from dead last to second makes me think I got this quite right though. Abu Dhabi: This is quite an odd one. Never felt at ease with the car. But I guess it's still quite fast, fast enough actually to have a shot at winning in the race against really fast drivers. Be really careful with the rear of the car through the first sector. Brazil: My best setup. Not my kind of track, but this setup was really easy to make, hardly took an hour. It's easy to push with it and it felt great throughout the whole grand prix distance.

Wings: This statistic shows pretty well how higher wings are usually faster in this game. I used pretty high wings on all occasions but Monza. And I did poorly at Monza. The only other thing you can take from this is that my camber tends to be rather high than low. I don't know if I'm missing out on something there, but I've faired well with it so far. Also proof that I usually finish higher up that I qualifyed.

Qualifying -> Race

So, I said that these were only the qualifying setups I used. Yes, I have different setup for race and qualy. And so should you. In the race you have more fuel onboard. But how does that affect your setup? More understeer Slower acceleration More tyre wear So, what do I usually change from qualy to race? Of course this is not as trivial as I make it, but for a non-professional this should suffice as a starting point. You can always test to make the setup adapt better to racing conditions. Lower your gears by one click to the left Give the car some extra oversteer Where do you get oversteer now? You can get oversteer from basically anywhere, just have a look at what each setup option tells you (Although there are more options to create balance differences that the game tells you). If you understand the setup and have tested it for some time you might know if you'd rather change the springs, ARBs, or something else. If you don't, you can just try upping your front wing. Testing is always advised, especially if you make changes to the balance of the car. If you're not confident in changing something and don't want to test, go ahead and don't change the balance. Be careful though, as you will encounter understeer during the first laps of a GP.

Wet-Weather
So, what do you change when it's raining? Let's see what the rain has an effect on: Balance (More understeer) Less grip Aquaplaning Less acceleration Worse braking As you can see this list is quite bit longer than the previous. Let's start with Aquaplaning: It's the most probelmatic of these occurences, but also the easiest to master. Just increase your ride height. By 2-3 clicks for intermediate conditions, 5-6 clicks for heavy wet conditions. Braking: This proves quite stressful after some time in the rain. You'll need to lessen your brake pressure, and increase your brake size. Also you might want to shift your brake balance more rearward. This is the part that is of the highest priority for good and consistant laptimes in the rain and might take some laps on the track to find what brake balance fits. Balance & Acceleration: Refer to the qualifying -> race part for that. It's basically the same thing. Less grip: Can't really do much about it. You can raise your wings if you're not already running the highest. I usually just click my front wing 1 to the right, wich incidentally solves the understeer issue as well.

Different Cars and driving styles

Different Cars: If you're not driving the Williams you'll find that the setup isn't working as well for you as it could. Every car is different in its balance and suspension that comes with it. So if you want to bring these setups to work with another car than the Williams, you'll want to look at the suspension. And possibly aero. Of course you don't go and edit it without testing it first. Find the little things that don't work for you and change them (easier said than done, I know). What parts do you want to look at for changes? ARBs Springs Camber Toe Wings Gears This might seem alot, but you'll probably only need to change them by one or two clicks left or right. Also when a setting is maxed out like -3.5 front camber, or 1 or 11 front spring you'll probably not change it, as it is important for the circuit (not saying you can rule out having to change something there, but it's less likely, so try other things first). Driving style: Yes, everyone has got a different driving style. No, we're not all like Jenson Button. Not Lewis Hamilton either. It's just small differences that you probably only notice when you look at others videos and compare them to another. It something that just refelcts your way of thinking when driving and comes naturally. Chances are good that you and I have different driving styles. Does that reflect in our setups? Yes. Does that mean our setups are vastly different? No. The differences can be ironed out by changing small things on the setup. I have a friend who's setups tends to make the car very slidey, to the point where, when you enter a corner you'll hardly know where you'll exit it. But he's a very fast guy and this works for him. My setups are generally the opposite. I like the car to stick exactely where I want it to be, so I can always be sure it does what I want it to. You can also learn to adapt to a setup. Just load it up and drive as long as you want with it until you feel you understand the driving style that went into it. I hope these setups help you in your driving.
