ATHENEUM

Credit By Choice
Student Information The Credit by Choice Program is designed to provide students the opportunity to choose learning experiences tailored to their personal educational needs and to have them recorded on their high school transcript. This program is open to high school students currently enrolled at Atheneum School. Students must keep a log or journal throughout the course to be reviewed by the sponsoring faculty member. An overview of each program option is given below. Details of requirements for each program are attached. It is the responsibility of the student to work independently to complete the proposal and carry out the program according to the guidelines.

General Guidelines
1. Students proposing a Credit by Choice (CBC) Program must have prior written approval of their parents and a faculty member. Student proposals must include the following information: student name, mentors name and contact number, description of mentors qualifications, and a detailed outline with goals and objectives from the mentor. An application for Credit by Choice (pg.5) must accompany each proposal. 2. An Atheneum faculty member must approve, sponsor and/or supervise the students program. 3. Atheneum School sets standards for issuing credits. Atheneum School is not the sponsoring agency for off-campus programs and is not responsible for the students personal or financial liability. Program expenses are the responsibility of the individual students and their families. 4. CBC courses will be titled as such on the students transcript. Programs I (Educational Experience, Travel or Internship ) and, V (Community Service/Field Study) may only be taken for elective credit. Specific curriculum area credit will be recorded for Programs II (Correspondence Course), III (College Course work), and IV, (Credit by Examination). 5. The grade received will be incorporated into the students high school grade point average (GPA).

CBC Programs at Atheneum School


Program I: Educational Experience, Travel, or Internship Credit may be earned for a planned learning experience gained through participationn individualized study, in a travel/study tour, or internship. The learning experience must be scheduled in advance and approved by Atheneum faculty. Program II: Correspondence Course The purpose of the correspondence course is to meet needs and interests of students as approved Atheneum faculty. Consideration will be given to the students record in completing independent studies. Correspondence programs must be approved by Atheneum faculty. Upon completion, the student must submit proof of grade. Program III: College Course Work This program is designed to give good-standing students currently enrolled at Atheneum School the opportunity to receive credit for certain courses through colleges and universities.The course needs to be approved by Atheneum faculty. College courses must be 100 level and above. Students must register for at least three (3) semester hours to receive 0.5 high school credit and six (6) semester hours for 1.0 high school credit. When the student has completed their college coursework, they must submit proof of grade. Program IV: Credit by Examination Credit by examination is an opportunity for the advanced student to progress at his/her own learning rate in courses approved by Atheneum faculty. Credit may be awarded on demonstrated proficiency through an examination process. A ninety-percent (90%) score is required to receive credit. Program V: Community Service and/or Field Study Credit may be earned through a planned community service program that provides learning experiences in the community. Students may also propose field studies in the community, such as a research project using the community or a unique educational opportunity, including physical education activities, available only in the field. One hundred twenty (120) hours of acceptable service will earn 0.5 unit of credit. Examples of community service and field study programs: Alaska Native Heritage Center courses Cook Inlet Tribal Council Big Brothers/Big Sisters, High School Bigs Program Alaska Theatre of Youth-Summer Conservatory Program VI High School Credit for Middle School Courses Faculty may decide to add to a students high school transcript certain classes taken during middle school. The letter grades are entered on the transcript and calculated in GPA. Talk to Atheneum faculty for more information. 2

PRESENT GRADE LEVEL_____ LANGUAGE _________________________ WORLD LANGUAGES CREDIT REQUIREMENTS: The World Languages Credit is an opportunity for Atheneum students who have studied 2 years of a language at the middle school level) to earn a 1.0 "Pass" elective credit. To receive the Credit, students must earn Level II language credit as high school students complete both semesters of Level II in same language as that studied in middle school. successfully complete both semesters of Level II with a "B" or better. request that the Credit be added to their high school transcript using the Atheneum School "Credit by Choice" process. DOCUMENTATION OF WORLD LANGUAGES CREDIT: The World Languages Incentive Credit is P for passing and will be recorded on the student's 9th grade transcript. The P will not affect the students overall GPA. Transcripts are legal documents and will not be changed once credit is recorded.
