ROBERT HALL WINERY

Infused with Hospitality
The winerys owner, Robert L. Hall, had many years of experience in the hospitality sector prior to acquiring the Hall Ranch in Paso Robles. After planting his vineyards he put all his energy and knowledge to work to create a winery and hospitality center that would welcome guests. The smallest of details can make a huge difference when it comes to entertaining. I wanted to create a warm and beautiful place in Paso Robles that people would visit time and time again. I had envisioned a facility that would be suited for formal weddings, casual barbecues and everyday celebrations. As visitors walk from the parking lot to the hospitality centers tasting room they are greeted with the relaxing sound of water from the large fountain. The walk continues by the reflecting pool giving a sense of elegance and, in the warmer months, a cooling effect. Bright flowers can be seen in almost every direction with something in full bloom each season. More than 500 rose bushes are planted on the property. The large mahogany and glass doors lead into the spacious tasting room, designed and painted by artists Steve Kalar and Margaret Burrell. Through the tasting room windows, views of the estate vineyards studded with large oak trees complete the scene. The winery produces all of the traditional California varietals and blends that thrive in Paso Robles including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Additional varietals produced include Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Orange Muscat, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah and Vintage Port made from the traditional Portuguese grapes. According to winemaker, Don Brady, After 12 years of working with fruit from the same vineyards, weve developed a consistent house style thats elegant, food friendly, balanced and age worthy. With so many wines there is something for every palate on the list. The tasting room staff is very knowledgeable and are delighted to help make the tasting experience a memorable one. For guests who want to linger there are plenty of things to do at Robert Hall. Every day the winery offers a guided, educational tour of the large caverns, winery and hospitality center. The tour is included with the tasting fee and is a great way to learn more about how the wines are made. Everything from the vineyard to the bottle is discussed with a barrel tasting offered in the caverns. The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes. The hospitality center also offers several settings to enjoy a picnic. Guests may purchase wine by the glass or bottle to enjoy with their picnic and a deli station is stocked with cheese, salami and crackers. The Garden Terrace overlooking the vineyards provides caf seating, the amphitheater offers bench seating with yet another water feature to enjoy, and the grassy knoll beside the winery has several picnic tables under the trees. The two regulation bocce ball courts, created old-world style with crushed oyster shells, are available for guests to enjoy. The winery does recommend making a reservation if you are planning a group outing to use the courts.

ALAPAY CELLARS
A Little Piece of Heaven
By CarolyN TUrNer

ALAPAY CELLARS open sunday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (due to Farmers market) saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. 415 First street in avila Beach (805) 595-2632 | www.alapaycellars.com

It only takes one visit to Alapay Cellars beautiful seaside tasting room to understand why owners Scott and Rebecca Remmenga chose the name Alapay for their winery, which is the Chumash word for heavenly or a world above. The combination of delicious wines, warm and friendly staff and a gorgeous location certainly amounts to Alapay Cellars offering all visitors a little piece of their heaven. Were here to show visitors a good time and let the wines speak for themselves, said Scott, who is also the winemaker. A Central Coast native, Scott started Alapay Cellars with about 1,200 cases of Viognier, Pinot Noir and Syrah, but their growing clientele wanted more choices, so they expanded their list to include Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. In the next couple months, visitors can also look forward to the release of a 2011 dry ros called Beachtown Blush, as well as a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc and their ever-popular Alatre Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Grenache. Over the past eleven years, the Remmengas have built their business on strong relationships with some of the best growers throughout the Central Coast. We only source from some of the top vineyards from Santa Ynez Valley to Paso Robles, said Scott. These include Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, French Camp Vineyard in Paso Robles and Jack McGinnely Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. Their dedication to attaining the best fruit for their wines has earned Alapay a consistency in high quality, resulting in a steady stream of awards including a Gold for both their 2008 Rebekah and 2009 Zinfandel, a Double Gold Best of Class for their 2009 Lagrein, and a Sweepstakes Award for Best Dessert Wine in the Competition for their 2009 Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc at the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. They were also awarded a Double Gold for the 2009 Chardonnay at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Our goal is to remain a premium boutique winery, and to make sure that I always

take a hands-on approach to winemaking, said Scott. This approach has not only earned Alapay recognition at wine competitions, but also a strong following through their wine club and tasting room, since that is the only way to purchase their awardwinning wines. Ive been amazed by the rapid growth of our wine club, said Scott. I love to see the publics response to our wines and I love how eager people are to spread the word about our wine. We do very little advertising, so word of mouth is incredibly powerful for us. Over the past several years the Remmengas have also spread the word about Alapay Cellars by inviting their wine club members to join them on various international cruises. In the past they have enjoyed cruises to the Greek Isles, Tahiti and the Baltic Sea with sometimes as many as 60 wine club members! We have a very loyal following, said Scott, only days after returning from a cruise to Tahiti. We get to see the world as a result of our wine, and Im always amazed at how, by the end of the cruise, the group really comes together. Its neat how friendships develop on these trips and some of our members will tell us about how they still keep in touch. This fall, Scott and Rebecca will be taking a ten-day cruise from Venice, Italy to Athens, Greece. This trip will include several wine tastings and wine dinners, along with plenty of breathtaking sights. If you would like to be a part of this adventure contact Journeys of Distinction at (805) 688-0658. For those who would rather stay local, Alapay Cellars hosts a sunset cruise in Avila Beach called the Avila Baywatch. The boat leaves from Port San Luis in Avila Beach and cruises around Avila Bay from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy live music with Steve Meyers, appetizers and plenty of Alapay wine. Mark your calendars with these upcoming Sunset Cruise dates: July 6, August 17 and August 31. These cruises always sell out so make sure to purchase your tickets early by calling Juan at (805) 595-2632 or emailing info@alapaycellars.com. Visitors to Alapays beautiful tasting room will often have the chance to meet the winemaker on the weekends and at various times throughout the week as well. Come by for a wine tasting and enjoy a wide array of wine-related gifts as well as their beautiful fish tanks.

Two years after businessman and financer Bill Foley moved his family to Santa Barbara in 1994, he saw the realization of his life-long dream: to become a vintner of premier California wines. Mr. Foley founded Lincourt Vineyards in 1996 and named it after his two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney. Under the watchful eye of renowned winemaker Leslie Mead Renaud, the 50 acres of estate Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are farmed vine to vine with Renaud taking the best blocks of grapes to create each wine. Renaud also uses Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown on the vineyards of their sister winery, Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery, to create wines that represent the uniqueness of the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley wine growing regions. Drawing from years of experience working for wineries throughout California, Renaud shares Mr. Foleys commitment to quality winemaking. Each wine is aged in French Oak barrels for nine to twelve months, with the focus on creating wines that exemplify the unique terroir of the region and the traditional characteristics of the varietal. As you arrive at Lincourt Vineyards, the iconic windmill that also graces each of their wine labels will greet you as you enter the old craftsman-style farmhouse that now serves as their tasting room. The beautiful property and intimate tasting room offers visitors a sampling of the California wine lifestyle. Lincourt Vineyards is part of the Foley Family Wines portfolio, which includes Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery and Firestone Vineyard in the Santa Barbara County area, EOS Estate Winery in Paso Robles, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery and Chalk Hill Winery in Sonoma County, Merus and Kuleto Estate in Napa Valley and Three Rivers Winery in the state of Washington. This diverse portfolio is a benefit to those that join the Lincourt Wine Club as their tasting privileges extend to these sister wineries.

Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-theart stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. Stay tuned to www.figmtnbrew.com for more information, or follow them on Facebook: Figueroa Mountain Brewing for the latest news and updates.

In Greek mythology, legend has it that every morning Eos began the new day by lifting the sun into the sky. Aptly named for this goddess of the dawn, with each new day Eos Estate Winery offers visitors a chance to taste unique wines in a beautiful tasting room located at the heart of Paso Robles wine country. Originally created in 1985 by the Arciero family, one of the largest wine-grape growers in the appellation, Eos Estate Winery was acquired by Bill Foley in October of 2010, now representing the Foley Family Wine portfolio in the Paso Robles region. Production has been scaled down from 350,000 cases to 20,000 cases with wines made from grapes not only from the Paso Robles region, but other well known wine regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma County. These changes in the winerys production allow Eos to focus on smaller quantities of high-quality wines. Eos is about honest, authentic, straightforward wines sourced from premier vineyard sites in Paso Robles and throughout California, said Hospitality Manager, Katy Smith. It takes high-quality grapes to produce high-quality wines, and Eos prides itself on sourcing its fruit from some truly great vineyards throughout the Central Coast, as well as from some of the other California vineyards in Foley Family Wines. In 2010, Amy Freeman became the winemaker after working at several other wineries along the Central Coast including Byron Vineyard and Winery, Rusack Vineyards, Saucelito Canyon and Lincourt Vineyards. Freeman is very

active in sustainability and brings an environmentally conscious approach to winemaking at Eos Estate Winery. This combination of great fruit and great winemaking brings to life bold yet easydrinking wines. Eos Estate Winery offers approachable and non-pretentious wines that everyone can enjoy, said Smith, when asked what makes Eos stand out from the other Paso Robles wineries. Eos also offers a dessert wine-only wine club, which is not usual for wineries on the Central Coast, but is very popular for those with a sweet tooth! This June, visitors can look forward to the release of a couple of standout wines including the 2009 Eos Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is exceptionally rich due to the small amounts of Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah blended into it. The deep garnet hue and a palate loaded with black cherries, clove, cola and espresso make it a perfect pair for your heavier meat dishes such as steak, lamb, beef or venison. For those with a sweet tooth, make sure to taste the 2010 Tears of Dew, Eos Late Harvest Moscato. This wines golden color is reminiscent of the dawns first light, replete with aromas of white peach and hibiscus that give way to a palate filled with apricot and nectarine. Enjoy this wine as a stand-alone dessert or paired with firm cheese and dried fruit, or for a truly interesting twist, pour over vanilla ice cream. Eos also offers a secondary label of wines called the Lost Angel Wines, with the tagline of naughty wines for naughty times. This wine collection is for those looking for something a bit more bold, edgy and iconoclastic, as the name evokes the notion of someone breaking free of the quotidian, mounting a vintage Harley and joining the Lost Angel revolution. With names such as Red Mischief and Ruckus, its no wonder the tasting notes state that our goal is to create bangin wines that seduce the palate with scandalously good flavors and aromas. These varietals are all offered at $10 per bottle, and are meant to be light-hearted, easy-drinking wines that make it easy to indulge, said Smith. If youre looking for some delicious food to pair with your wine tasting, you may enjoy a private tasting and lunch pairing any day of the week for only $25; reservations are required. Also not to be missed is the upcoming Independence Day Celebration at Eos on Wednesday, July 4th from 6 to 10 p.m. Guests of all ages will enjoy a wine country picnic on the lawn along with live music and a perfect view of the city fireworks. Reservations are required and you will also be given a half bottle of wine with admission. Eos Estate Winery is located at 2300 Airport Road, on the corner of Highway 46 East. The tasting room is open and spacious, with a unique assortment of merchandise and gourmet foods, and there is also an option for a private tasting in the barrel room. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own food for a picnic and wine tasting on the veranda.

TALLEY VINEYARDS
A Quarter Century of Quality

TALLEY VINEYARDS 3031 lopez Drive in arroyo Grande open daily 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (805) 489-0446 | www.talleyvineyards.com

For 25 years Talley Vineyards has been the preeminent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producer along the Central Coast. The farm land was first planted to fruits and vegetables in the 1940s and by the 1980s grapes were planted, though even at that time people thought grape growing was mere speculation. Back then Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this area were minor crops from a place few had ever heard of, says owner Brian Talley. Now those grapes are recognized as some of the very best in California and wine grapes are the highest value crop in our county. Few people could have ever predicted that Talley wines would become a favorite of the most prominent wine critic in the world, Robert Parker. Weve received incredible recognition from Robert Parker with his scores of our recent vertical tasting from the early 1990s, says Anna Heacock, Marketing and Regional Sales Manager for Talley. It is a testament to the ageability of our wines and the quality of what comes out of the Arroyo Grande Valley, she adds. Of course the wines are ready to drink now and you dont have to wait to open a bottle of Talley wine, or their secondary label, Bishops Peak. Both wines are farmed in the same manner; grapes are hand picked, hand sorted, and are crafted in small lots with bright acidity and clean fruit, reflecting the varied sites in the Arroyo Grande Valley. My philosophy with Talley Vineyards is that we strive to capture the essence of what makes each of our vineyards special, Brian Talley explains. We do that with careful farming that emphasizes moderate yields and gentle winemaking that preserves the unique character of the place. And, part of that sense of place is the limestone soil Talley vines are planted in, so similar to the Burgundy region in France, the birthplace of great Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. But there is history in this land too and tasting at Talley gets you into a serene and beautiful place where people take advantage of their picnic areas. We have three very different picturesque places to enjoy a bottle of wine and a nice meal, Anna suggests. To fully understand the passion behind the Talley Chardonnays, once a year, just after they release their new vintages, they have the Chardonnay Experience, held in the Rincon Vineyard. This years celebration will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 16th. Aimed squarely at the Chardonnay enthusiast, this in-depth tour and tasting features a tour of Rincon Vineyard showcasing the distinctive differences with the other Talley Chardonnays, a tour of the winery with barrel tastings, and a special Chardonnay tasting of current releases and past vintages from their cellar. The event concludes with a picnic-style lunch in the tasting room courtyard. The cost is a mere $50 per person, but call quickly to ensure you get in as this event always sells out fast. Wine tasting at Talley is $6 for five wines, but they also offer tours including an estate tour and tasting for $35, a 90-minute tour through the vineyards, winery, barrel room sampling barrel wines and current releases. The Special Reserve and Library Tasting ($25) encompass the best Talley wines and offer an exclusive reserve wine tasting. The package includes wines from Talleys current vintages, library wines and barrel samples of future wines. Theres a $12 tasting of the single-vineyard wines when they are available and the basic tour ($15 with tasting) lets you experience the scenic grounds of the vineyards with a casual half-hour tour.

Perfect Pairs
Salad Lyonnaise with Summerwood Winery & Inns White Rhne Wines
Summerwood Winery & Inn Executive Chef Kelly Wangard relishes the opportunity that the summer season brings with an abundant supply of farm fresh vegetables to incorporate in her daily menus for authentic farm-to-table cuisine. One of Kellys favorite dishes for brunch, lunch or dinner is a Salad Lyonnaise. The texture from the poached egg and crisp bacon combined with the mixture of salad greens and zesty vinaigrette, is further complemented when enjoyed with a glass of Summerwood wine. Chef Kellys favorite pairings are with a white-Rhne wine, such as the Summerwood Viognier or the Summerwood Diosa Blanc a lively blend of Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne. The Diosa Blanc is golden straw in color, featuring aromas of ripe peach, pear and white flowers with a hint of orange peel and smoky oak. This full-bodied Rhne blend is round, smooth and silky. Pears, dried apples, apricots, caramel and honey are followed by a fresh, long finish. Summerwood Winery specializes in small lots of ultrapremium wines. The estate vineyards provide the base of the winerys Syrah and Cabernet, with additional fruit sourced exclusively from vineyards on Paso Robles westside. The Summerwood Winery & Inn monthly Perfect Pairings series is led by Executive Chef Kelly Wangard. Each epicurean experience has a different theme, such as Bacon & Eggs, Herbs & Spices and Packing a Picnic and includes a featured wine pairing. When your summer travels bring you to Paso Robles Wine Country, Summerwood Winery & Inn invites you to drop in for a tasting, event or a stay at their nine-room guest inn. Summerwood is located on Arbor Road off Highway 46 West, just two minutes from Highway 101 at the gateway to the Paso Robles westside wineries. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with picnic areas and deli items available. Adelinas Bistro & Marketplace
By BreTTe aNN WomaCK

Adelinas Bistro is located inside the beautiful Monarch Club in Nipomo. The property on which the club stands was once owned by an English Captain, William Dana. He and his family are thought to have founded Nipomo. Captain Danas favorite daughter was named Adelina this is where the bistro gets its name. At the helm of the restaurant is Chef Charles Weber, who has an incredibly diverse background. Chef Charles is classically trained in French cuisine, but has traveled and cooked all over the country. Before landing in Nipomo, Charles spent three years in the Napa Valley where he perfected the art of food and wine pairing. His menu is perfectly California with an upscale flair. Being located in Nipomo, the restaurant is able to source its produce from neighboring artisans and farmers. The menu is always filled with local and seasonal ingredients. Chef Charles tends to an herb garden onsite which guests can taste in many of his dishes. Other

J. LOHR VINEYARDS & WINES

In Pursuit of the Best Wines Possible
By lisa PreTTy

Founder Jerry Lohr with Director of Winemaking Jeff Meier

J. LOHR PASO ROBLES WINE CENTER open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 6169 airport road, Paso robles jlohr.com | (805) 239-8900

J. Lohr is known to produce a wide range of high quality wines with prices ranging from $10 for everyday drinking wines to $50 per bottle for the limitedproduction cuves. At the J. Lohr Paso Robles Wine Center located on Airport Road, guests may select up to six wines for tasting from the four J. Lohr signature tiers, each reflecting the winerys focus on flavor from vineyard to bottle. The four tiers include J. Lohr Estates, J. Lohr Vineyard Series, J. Lohr Gesture and J. Lohr Cuve Series. J. Lohr Estates wines are flavorful, food-friendly wines grown in Monterey County and Paso Robles, while the J. Lohr Vineyard Series wines are more limited in production and made from fruit grown in prized vineyard blocks in Paso Robles, the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County, and St. Helena in Napa Valley. Launched in 2009, J. Lohr Gesture wines are offered by J. Lohr winemakers as a token of appreciation to tasting room visitors and guests. These limited-release, Rhne-inspired varietals and blends showcase Paso Robles fruit, based on what inspires the winemakers each vintage. The final tier, the J. Lohr Cuve Series, is a trio of Bordeaux-inspired blends representing a California approach to the Grand Cru wines found in Pauillac, St. Emilion and Pomerol. With well-established estate vineyards throughout various appellations, a diverse line of wines, and the production of approximately one million cases each vintage, you would think the winemakers would have their hands full and not be taking on new projects. Winemakers are known to have a somewhat short attention span and a great deal of wanderlust, said Jeff Meier, director of winemaking. I am always in pursuit of the best wine possible, continually seeking vineyards with unique soils and climates. From an intellectual standpoint, it is exciting to work with new vineyards. It was likely Jeffs wanderlust and pursuit of the best wines that led J. Lohr to the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County. Although the winery has estate vineyards in the nearby Arroyo Seco AVA, intrigued by the differences in the soils and sunnier microclimate, J. Lohr entered into a partnership to develop two new estate vineyards in the area. The first new wines from these vineyards have now been added to the J. Lohr Vineyard Series. The winery is delighted to offer the 2010 J. Lohr Highlands Bench Pinot Noir and 2010 J. Lohr Highlands Bench Chardonnay exclusively to tasting room guests, wine club members and visitors to the J. Lohr on-line storefront. The styles of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are very diverse, and these two new wines offer something different for the palate from the existing J. Lohr wines. Unlike Arroyo Seco Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, whose rich, Burgundian styles reflect the fog, wind, cool air and gravelly soils in which they are grown, the J. Lohr Highlands Bench wines are markedly Californian in style, full of voluptuous fruit flavors. Grown on the east-facing slopes of the Santa Lucia mountains to the west of the Salinas Valley, the vines are grown at altitudes between 280 and 600 feet, are bathed in warm sunlight, and receive gentle ocean breezes off of Monterey Bay, leading to bold fruit flavors of cherry and raspberry in J. Lohr Highlands Bench Pinot Noir and intense tropical flavors of passion fruit, pineapple and juicy, ripe peach in J. Lohr Highlands Bench Chardonnay. To accentuate the New World styles of the Highlands Bench wines, Jeff Meier and Red Winemaker Steve Peck used several native fermentations, more malolactic fermentation and a higher percentage of new oak. As a result, these wines display beautiful, compelling structure and a lush, velvety mouthfeel. On your next visit to Paso Robles, be sure to stop by the J. Lohr Wine Center to taste the first release of their Santa Lucia Highlands wines. Try the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this region, along with those from the Arroyo Seco appellation and experience the difference.

When Sashi Moorman and Tom Stolpman signed Stolpman Vineyards lease for production space at 1700 Industrial Way Unit B in Lompoc back in 2001 they would never have guessed people would drive all the way west on Highway 246 to visit wine tasting rooms in an industrial area in foggy Lompoc! Now, almost ten years later, as the largest tenant of the now famous Wine Ghetto, we decided it was time to join other wineries and share our state-of-the art production space with our loyal customers. In the midst of production, youll find the newest spot to taste the Stolpman line up! Relax while seated at our huge wooden table in our beautiful newly remodeled tasting room. Our extremely knowledgeable tasting room staff will explain both our organic estate vineyard methodology as well as all of our cool tools in Lompoc: refrigerated barrel rooms, small lot fermentors, new French puncheons, double sorting tables, and concrete tanks. Our 20 year passionate pursuit for quality has translated into sophisticated and concentrated new releases. We also like to show off our winerys history, often opening up verticals of library wines going back to the 1990s.
