Section Properties - Notes

General
Availability

Section properties for all sections available in the UK are given together with those from other standards used in
Europe and the rest of the world. Corus supply all of the sections listed subject to the normal terms and conditions.
However, sections outside of the standard British range may not be generally available in the UK. The user should
therefore satisfy himself as to the available supply before specifying these sections. Corus will be happy to help
and can be contacted at the contact addresses in the contact section.

In certain circumstances, Corus may be able to provide sections outside of the standard ranges. Please consult
the relevant sales office for further details.
Notes as to the general availability of particular sections are given as footnotes to the tables.
Symbols
Symbols used are generally the same as those in BS 5950: Part 1:1990, BS4 or appropriate EN standards. In
addition the following symbols have been used:
Symbol
*

++

Materials

The structural sections referred to are of weldable structural steels to BSEN10025: 1993, BSEN10113: 1993 and
BS EN 10210: 1994.
The steel grades covered in the tables are S275 and S355, which are equivalent to design grades 43 and 50 of BS
5950: Part 1. Details of the corresponding grades are given in the Standards section.
Specifications
The structural sections referred to are produced to the following specifications:
Universal beams, universal columns, joists, universal bearing piles and structural tees (cut from universal beams
and universal columns):

BS4: Part 1: 1993: Structural steel sections - specification for hot rolled sections
Structural hollow sections:
EN 10210: Part 2: 1997: Hot finished structural hollow sections of non-alloy and fine gram structural steels.
Tolerances, dimensions and section properties
Some other hot finished structural hollow sections currently in regular production are also included. Although not
listed in EN 10210-2, these additional sections comply with the tolerances of that standard.
Equal and unequal angles:
ES 4848: Part 4: 1972: Hot rolled structural steel sections. Equal and unequal angles Including Amendments 1
(February 1974), 2 (October 1982) and 3 (February 1986)
Tolerances
For tolerances on shape, reference should be made to BS EN 10034 for UB, UC and bearing piles. For tolerances
of other sections, reference should be made to the above standards. Extracts giving the main tolerance details are
given in the design section.
Units
The dimensions of sections are given in millimetres (mm). Mass is given in kg/m. Generally, the centimetre (cm) is
used for the calculated properties. For surface areas, the metre (m) is used and for the warping constant (H), the
decimetre (dm) is used.
Note:
1dm = 0.lm = lOOmm
1 dm6 = 1 x 10-6 m6 = 1 x 1012 mm6
Dimensions and properties of sections
Mass
Mass per metre has been calculated assuming the density of steel is 7850 kg/m3.
In all cases, including compound sections the tabulated masses are for the steel section alone and no allowance
has been made for connecting material or fittings.
Ratios for local buckling
The ratios of the flange outstand to thickness (b/T) and the web depth to thickness (d/t) are given for I, H and
channels sections. The ratios of the outside diameter to thickness (D/t) are given for circular hollow sections. The
ratios d/t and b/t are given for square and rectangular hollow sections. They have been calculated using the
dimensions specified in Figure 3 of BS 5950: Part 1 and are for use when element and section class are being
checked to the limits given in Table 7 of BS 5950: Part1.
Section properties
General

All section properties have been accurately calculated and rounded to four significant figures. They have been
calculated from the metric dimensions given in the appropriate standard. For angles, BS4848: Part 4: 1972
assumes that the toe radius equals half the root radius.
Sections other than hollow sections
Second moment of area (I)
The second moment of area of the section, often referred to as moment of inertia, has been calculated taking into
account all tapers, radii and fillets of the sections.
Radius of gyration (r)
The radius of gyration is a parameter used in buckling calculation and is derived as follows:
r = (I / A)1/2
where A is the cross-sectional area
For castellated and cellular sections, the radius of gyration given is calculated at the net section as required in
design to BS 5950: Part 1.
Elastic modulus (Z)
The elastic modulus is used to calculate the moment capacity based on the design strength of the section or the
stress at the extreme fibre of the section from a known moment. It is derived as follows:
Z =I/y
where y is the distance to the extreme fibre of the section from the elastic neutral axis.
For castellated and cellular sections the elastic moduli given are those at the net section. The elastic moduli of the
tee is calculated at the outer face of the flange and toe of the tee formed at the net section.
For channels the elastic modulus about the minor (y-y) axis is given at the toe of the section
y = B - Cy
where:
B is the width of the section
Cy is the distance from the centroid to the outer face of the web
For angles the elastic moduli about both axes are given at the toes of the section
i.e yx = A - Cx and yy = B - Cy
where:
A is the leg length perpendicular to x-x axis
B is the leg length perpendicular to y-y axis
Cx is the distance of the centre of gravity from the back of the angle, referred to the x-x axis and

Cy is the distance of the centre of gravity from the back of the angle, referred to the y-y axis.
Buckling parameter (u) and torsional index (x)
The buckling parameter and torsional index used in buckling calculations are derived as follows:
a) For bisymmetric flanged sections and flanged sections symmetrical about the minor axis only
u = [(4Sx g)/(A h )]
2

2 2 1/4

x = 0.566h[A/J]

1/2

b) For flanged sections symmetric about the major axis only

u = [(IySx g)/(A H)]
2

1/4

x = 1.132[(AH)/(IyJ)]1/2
where
Sx is the plastic modulus about the major axis
g = [1-Iy/Ix]
Ix is the second moment of area about the major axis
Iy is the second moment of area about the minor axis
A is the cross-sectional area
h is the distance between shear centres of flanges (for T sections, h is the distance between the shear centre of
the flange and the toe of the web)
H is the warping constant
J is the torsion constant
Warping constant (H) and torsion constant (J)
The warping constant and torsion constant for I, H and channel sections are calculated using the formulae given in
SCI publication (P057) Design of Members Subject to Combined Bending and Torsion. For Tee sections cut from
UB and UC sections, the warping constant (H) and torsion constant (J) have been derived as given below.
However, the values of the warping constant (H) for Tee sections are not tabulated as these are normally very
small.
H = 1/144 T3B3 + 1/36 (d - T/2)3 t3
J = 1/3 BT3 + 1/3 (d - T)t3 + a1D1 - 0.21 T4 - 0.105 t4
Where:
a1 = -0.042 + 0.2204 t/T + 0.1355 r/T - 0.0865 (t r)/T - 0.0725 t /T
2

D1 = [(T + r) + (r + 0.25 t) t] / [2r + t]

Note:
These formulae do not apply to joists, which have tapered flanges. Details are given in SCI Publication 057.
Plastic modulus (S)
The full plastic moduli about both principal axes are tabulated for all sections except angle sections.
Hollow sections
Common properties
For second moment of area, radius of gyration and elastic modulus, see notes above.
For square and rectangular hollow sections, the sectional properties have been calculated using the corner radii of
1.5 t externally and 1.0 t internally, except for the following square hollow sections, where an external corner radius
of 2.0 t and an internal radius of 1.0 t are used:
350 x 350 x 190, 22.0, 25.0
400 x 400 x 22.0, 25.0
450 x 450, 500 x 500, 550 x 550, and 600 x 600 (all thicknesses)
Torsion constant (J)
For circular hollow sections
J = 2I
For square and rectangular hollow sections
J = 1/3 t3h + 2k Ah
where:
I is the second moment of area
t is the thickness of section
h is the mean perimeter = 2 [(B - t) + (D - t)] - 2 Rc (4 - p)
Ah is the area enclosed by mean perimeter = (B - t) (D - t) -Rc2 (4 - p)
k =2 Ah t / h
B is the breadth of section
D is the depth of section
Rc is the average of internal and external corner radii.

Torsion modulus constant

For circular hollow sections
C = 2Z
For square and rectangular hollow sections
C=J/(t+k/t)
where Z is the elastic modulus and J, t and k are as previously defined.
