The Conservatory of the Ozarks The sound of music in Chesterfield Village

by Melissa Wittmer

There is a hidden gem located in Chesterfield Village. Since August 2009, students flock to the Conservatory of the Ozarks for lessons ranging from voice and piano to guitar and percussion. The sounds of singing and music carry across the street and bring enjoyment to people passing by. The Conservatorys director, Heather Leverich Roberts, was interviewed for this story. What led you to this line of work? I grew up with music and was blessed to have several great experiences that led me into my line of work. My mom taught me how to play the piano when I was 7 and I was singing in my church at the age of 3. I began musical instruction when I was still a child myself! After church, my friends would pay me a dollar for a piano lesson. I remember the first time one of my students played Amazing Grace for my churchI was only 9 or 10 but I still remember how proud I felt that she was able to do that as a result of my instruction. I loved that feeling! As a teenager, my piano teacher would let me teach in his place when he was gone and it was so fun! What is your educational background? I require every instructor at the Conservatory to have at least a Bachelors degree in his or her field. I hold a Bachelors degree in Voice from Maranatha Baptist Bible College and am pursuing a Masters degree in Music from Concordia University. Like most musicians, I began studying music when I was a child. I took lessons from John Archer in Monett from the age of 9 to 19. My homeschooling allowed me to have a flexible schedule with lots of time for practice. How does your business compare to others in Springfield that offer similar instruction? Springfield is fortunate to have lots of fine arts institutions! At the Conservatory, we strive for excellent quality in our lessons. All of our instructors are required to have at least a Bachelors degree in their field. Exciting performance opportunities are another service that we offer each month. Last month, we had a Spring Music Contest involving 150 contestants from all over the Ozarks. Our next big event is our Heather Leverich Roberts

Summer Talent Show on the outdoor stage at Founders Park. This month, our students will be performing at Garbos Pizza (Tuesday, May 22). We also offer students the opportunity to participate in performing ensembles and internship programs. Do you like being located in Chesterfield Village? I LOVE Chesterfield Village! It is so clean, safe, and pretty. Many of our clients walk to their lessons. Parents like to walk around the Village while their child is taking a lesson. I chose this location when I moved here because of the aesthetic appeal of the business district and the proximity to my home in Lakeshore. What awards/recognitions have you or your business received? In 2010 we were one of 5 nominees for the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award. Each year, dozens of our students earn awards in local music contests. How does your business contribute to the community or to students who take your classes? We try to offer several free performances each year so that students can perform their repertoire for residents at Culpepper Place, public schools or restaurants. We have also offered scholarships periodically for students who require fi(Continued on page 6)

nancial assistance for lesson fees. What should people expect if they are interested in lessons? First, call the Conservatory to schedule an audition. The audition is a half-hour session where the instructor and the student discuss goals and expectations. Its also a chance for the family to meet the instructor prior to committing to lessons. Its important to have a good personality match between teacher and student. Do you offer any special incentives for CV residents interested in taking lessons? Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally a busy time at the Chesterfield Village Pool. If the weather continues the current trend, we will hopefully have Did you hear the news? some hot dry weatherperfect pool weather! Chesterfield Village residents The pool underwent a huge transformation this spring and it will open on Friday, May 25. It took about a month longer than expected, but the new pool deck is finally finished. Curtis Triplett of Triplett Overlays applied the final coats of stain and sealant on May 17. After he fills the pool with water, Gary Weaver of All Brite Pools will turn on the heaters in the main pool for the first couple of weeks to take off the chill. Pool use is restricted to residents of Chesterfield Village and their guests. When you come to the pool, bring your electronic key card pass. This card allows access to the clubhouse restrooms and is used as proof of residency. Lexi Mason was hired for the position of pool monitor this summer. Shes lived in the neighborhood for a long time and she will work 20 hours a week checking pool passes, cleaning pool filters and restrooms. Please be ready to show Lexi (or any other pool monitor) your pass when asked. This is strictly enforced to ensure that non-residents are not using Chesterfield Village facilities. Please note that the pool monitor is not a lifeguard and residents swim at their own risk. If you lost your pool pass or if you just moved in and need one, please contact Bob Sheldon at 887-9311.
