The activities of CICGE belong to different areas of the Earth and Space Sciences, including pure and applied scientific research, advanced teaching and education, promotion of science and services to the community. With a research team of 17 PhDs, it is organized in two different Groups: Group 1 Satellite Positioning and Navigation, Coastal Zones Applications, Space Weather and Reference Systems; Group 2 Remote Sensing, Image Processing and GIS.
on image segmentation; Beach hydromorphological behavior analysis through remote sensing; Bathymetric estimation by using satellite data; Extraction of a sand spit from IKONOS-2 satellite images; Breakwater stability analysis through a DGPS network Madeira Harbour, Portugal. Space Weather: Solar Energetic Particle Events: Models of particle propagation in the interplanetary medium; Large Scale Structure of the Solar Wind; Solar Radio Emissions associated with flares; CMEs and shocks using data from our radio-telescope; Models of Near Earth Radiation Environment. Reference Systems: Gaia is a global space astrometry mission of ESA. We are involved in the selection and characterization of the QSOs, in terms of intrinsic properties in correlation with the accuracy and stability of the object's centroid coordinates. The main goal is to produce a list of confirmed and well studied QSOs that can help on defining the alignment between International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) and the Gaia Extragalactic Celestial Reference Frame (GCRF).

workshops in Coimbra are open to the needs of the Portuguese and international scientific community. The laboratory of electronics for Cosmic Rays, e-CRLab, located in Lisbon, gives support to LIP groups developing activities in cosmic rays experiments, namely in the Pierre Auger Observatory and in the framework of Space applications. The LIP Computing Centre supports the Portuguese GRID infrastructure. In the area of Medical Physics, LIP works with research centres, hospitals and the private sector, through a shared research facility the Tagus LIP Laboratory for medical physics.

Effects in human spaceflight: study and simulation of radiation environment in manned missions (eg. to Mars), prediction of radiation hazards for human spaceflight and study of mitigation strategies.
Radiation Monitors
Detector design and optimisation through dedicated simulation of detector response to the radiation environment populations for mission specific cases. Analysis of real data.
Participation in DUAL
DUAL consortium submitted a gamma-ray space telescope mission proposal to the MClass ESA Cosmic Vision call (launch 2022). DUAL was named upon mission dual concept featuring an all-sky Compton camera and a focusing Laue Lens. LIPCoimbra in collaboration with the IASF (Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale e Fisica Csmica), Bologna, are developing a Laue lens focal plane based on CdZnTe.
