ts been a while since evo took some road cars to the Nrburgring, as were conscious that some readers will not, and will never, have the same fascination (sorry, Faszination) with the place as most of the editorial team here have. But this month, it had to happen. Why? Because we created a test so challenging for the new Lotus Exige S that it bordered on the cruel. For starters we picked the toughest trackorientated rivals to compare it against and then threw in a 1000-mile drive and then a challenging road route up in the Eifel mountains and then to top it all a journey into (the Green) Hell. The new V6-engined Exige would have to undertake the toughest test we could conjure up because if it performed, and performed well, we could put aside some of the miserable tales emanating from Hethel at present and tell the most important story that Lotus builds bloody good performance cars. If Im honest, Im a little surprised that Lotus agreed to allow the Exige S to compete in this test at all after all, some of the cars we were pitching it against cost twice as much but, to its credit, it just threw evo the keys. Some manufacturers (mentioning no names, Ferrari), simply refuse to allow their vehicles to compete in a test against cars they do not perceive to be rivals. Of course, this is their right, but often the evo way is to purposely inject juxtaposition into a group scenario. We do this not to see a car fail, but to reveal magic. And, this month, it happened. Read Jethro Bovingdon and John Barkers fantastic words (and see Dean Smiths glorious images) starting on p62. Speaking of the Ring, Im writing this from a hotel opposite the famous track (youll read about why Im here in a future issue). Im not as familiar with the Nordschleife as some in
