System Description

1 General
Due to the continuous development of our design as well as specific customer requirements, the descriptions and instructions in this chapter are made in general terms and may in details diverge from the delivered system. If in doubt, contact Rolls-Royce Marine. For specific details regarding your deck machinery, see chapter 4 Delivery Specification, 5 Technical Data and 12 Design Drawings.

2 System Overview
The system works as a locking and securing device and is used during the changing of mooring components. A complete system normally consists of the following main components: One or more sets, each consisting of two towpins (1), one shark jaw (2) and one centering device (3). A set of stop pins may also be supplied. One hydraulic power pack with two integrated pump units. One or more sets, each with accumulator tanks for quick release and emergency release of the shark jaw. One remote control system with one portable control panel (on deck) and one fixed control panel (on bridge). The ship is normally equipped with one or two parallel sets of towpins and a shark jaw which can either be installed in separate housings, as illustrated in the figure below, or built together in one housing. The ship is normally equipped with one or two parallel sets of centering devices which can either be installed in separate housings, as illustrated in the figure below, or up to two sets built together in one housing.

System Description

3 Towpins, Shark Jaw and Centering Device

3.1 Overview
The system is designed to hold and control strong forces in chains and wires in rough sea conditions. The towpins, shark jaw and centering device are retractable below deck, which gives a smooth passage for mooring components.

3.2 Towpins
The towpins (1) are cast in steel and equipped with rotating liners (4) made in high strength steel. Each towpin has one retractable locking arm (2). The underside of each locking arm is curved so that the towline is centred into the shark jaw when the towpins are pulled down. The underside is also rounded to reduce wear of mooring components. There are two hydraulic cylinders, one (5) for lifting/lowering the towpin and one (3) for folding the locking arm in/out.

System Description The towpins can be raised and lowered (fully retracted below deck (1)). The locking arms can be folded in or out at any time as long as the slot is sufficiently above deck. The towpins are designed to force the mooring line down and keep it there. How far depends on line tension. They can also be used as shown in fig. 3 below, where chain can be twisted for easing in into the shark jaw. The rotating liners rotates when wire / chain are pulled against them with sufficient.

System Description

3.3 Shark Jaw

The shark jaw has different sizes of chain inserts (4) and wire insetrs (3). These can be combined to many combinations and whike the chain inserts fit several sizes of chain, the wire inserts are made for one wire size only. They are colour coded in signal colours to enable good size control from the brigde. .

Warning: The use of wrong inserts will lead to serious accidents

The shark jaw can rotate to be perpendicular to the direction of pull. If it rotates too easily, tighten the gasket bolts below deck for more friction.

3.4 Centering Device

The centering device consists of two centering arms (1), which are mounted in the housing (2).

Centering Device

The centering device has two functions: to force the pennant wire sideways to come within grasping range of the shark jaw. to lock and hold the mooring line to prevent it from rotating. To lock a wire rope, the centering arms must be equipped with inserts. After the mooring line has been locked by the centering arms, it is safe to disconnect the mooring line (1). When unfolding the centering arms, the pennant wire (2) rotates and the built up tension in the wire is released.

System Description

3.5 Hydraulic Power Pack

The hydraulic system is a high pressure system. The power pack has accumulator tanks (1) and two integrated pump units (2) and valves. The pump units power the system during normal operation and for charging accumulators.

3.6 Accumulator Tanks for the Shark Jaw

Accumulator tanks, which are installed close to the shark jaw, are used for quick release and emergency release of the shark jaw.

3.7 Electrical System

3.7.1 Overview
The control panel on the bridge is connected via interfaces to other components such as; the hydraulic power pack servo unit, detectors on the towpins, the portable control system, pressure displays, load cells for shark jaws and the horn. The the following figure shows a typical system.
