his year has certainly been an eventful one on the world stage and has had an impact on all our lives to one degree or another. I hope that all of you are able to experience peace and prosperity wherever you may live, and I try not to take for granted the quality of life that we enjoy here in Canada. As professionals we all have a desire to be good at what we do. I believe that one of the most important ways of achieving this is to be an active member of an industry-related association like ISA. We have so many priorities in our busy lives that it is hard to decide where we should spend our time. Even if all we do is to attend the occasional meeting of like-minded individuals and discuss a topic relevant to our careers, we will have gained something that will help us do our job better and maybe even help us in our personal lives. From my own experience I have found my association with ISA to have benefited me immensely both on and off the job and the leadership development has been invaluable. Not all of us want to be leaders but if we can become better at communicating, listening, technical presentations, dealing with others, and generally have a positive attitude, then we will enrich our lives in everything we do. The Construction and Design Division has increased its membership from the previous year in spite of the Division fee increase that came into effect in January. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new Members to the Division and hope that we can help you to meet some of your career aspirations by associating yourself with people who are involved in the same area of expertise. We know that Members want timely and relevant technical information and a means to network with their peers. Our Members are encouraged to submit brief technical articles on the latest updates in their field so we can post them on the Web site. Our program chair will be involved in ensuring a full slate of technical sessions at the fall conference in Houston in October. If you would like to publish or present something, send me an e-mail. Even if you are unable to attend any of the conferences, you can still buy the proceedings on CD and read about the latest developments in your fields of interest. If you have not done so already, join the ISA Division list serve (www.isa.org/shellcgi/lyris.pl?enter=condes) so you can network with your peers worldwide. If you have a question about a particular subject, just send it out in an e-mail to the list serve and lots of people in the group will likely respond. A newsletter is sent to all Division Members at least twice a year. If you have any ideas about what else you would like to see us doing, send me an e-mail.

Some Ideas on Membership:

There is no question in my mind that the Construction Design Division can be all things to all people in the Society. Think of it this way. In every industry, at every plant site, in every design office there is someone doing the jobs and following the career path that the charter of CONDES outlines. What other facet of ISA even comes close? I dont think that there is one. So, what does all of that have to do with you? After all, you are already an active Member of the Division or else you wouldnt be reading this article. But, what if you are not so active? What can you do for the good of your Division? What would you think is the most important part of your role in the Division? Certainly you could take a more active part in the future of the Division, but how? What would you do to improve everything you get from your ISA membership? It might be too late to be a paper writer or a panel member for ISA EXPO 2003, but what about ISA EXPO 2004? Would you be prepared to be a part of next years event? And, how would you do that? Certainly you could become a lot more active, but if you are reading this meandering bit of writing, you already have some inkling of an idea to become more involved. So, what can be done? Maybe you could be a paper reviewer. You know that I have a lot of respect for the Fellow Members of the Society. But, honestly, do you think that they should be reviewing technical papers about the best way to install a level gauge, or what are the guidelines for the installation of an intrinsically safe cable system? Maybe, but I think that the technicians and field engineers who are doing the design and installation of these systems are the best candidates to review these papers. So, what will you do? Will you sit back and let someone else decide what your Division will present during the next conference and exhibit? Or will you be a bigger part of CONDES and let your voice, or rather your technical expertise, be heard? Its up to you. CONDES has more than 1000 Members who would like to attend ISA EXPO 2003 at Reliant Center in Houston this October and it would be great if they all were there. That probably will not happen, but it could be possible some day in the future. All you have to do is become a bigger part of your Division, your Society, and yes, even your profession by becoming an active Member of CONDES, the answer to your technical needs. So, wont you join us for ISA EXPO 2003, become involved with the Society in general and the Division in particular, and become a bigger part of your technical group. Remember you are the source of all knowledge and you, as a Division Member, are the backbone of the Society. Do your part and Ill look forward to meeting you in Houston in October. L.M. Dutch Keen, P.E. Membership Chair

Random Thoughts
By Carl Mcclain
I have read all the info that has come from HQs and thought I would give my overview of all of it for those of you not fortunate enough to have the Internet. I have noticed that there are a lot of buying, selling, takeovers, and the like in todays business world, a few are Invensys Sell Baan, Peoplesoft going after J. D. Edwards, Dupont ups offer for Dupont Canada, Siemens deals for Alsom small and medium turbine units. GM is trying to unload part of its war and military manufacturing. With all of the changes going on it is almost like being your own grandpa. A group of oxide materials gives and accepts temperature changes causing a reaction of the materials to give a small amount of energy that may be able to be used in home and industrial means as an alternate energy supply, a thought. A process safety standard CD is available from HQs. Be sure and check out the safety technical conference at ISA EXPO 2003 in Houston. For workers in all fields it is prudent to become updated on safety measures and accident prevention. Remember the most responsible for safety is u. A very good policy is to check with your safety person when reporting to a new place of employment. A short look of some scheduled events in Long Beach, CA: 11 August 2003, Control Systems Engineering PE exam review course; 19 August 2003, Industrial Data Communications; 25 August 2003, CCST review course; 9 September 2003, Understanding Industrial Processes, Measurement, and Control; 15 September 2003, Understanding and Tuning Control Loops; 18 September 2003, Troubleshooting Instrumentation and Control Systems; 27-28 April 2004, ISA Automation West. If you wish to have these or any other courses taught at your location contact ISA HQs. Be sure aand check out the updated version of Volume 1 of the instrument engineering handbook, Process Measure-ment and Analysis. If you can attend ISA EXPO 2003 in Houston, there are many things to do, see, attend, and otherwise enjoy. Attend some classes, some conferences, panels, papers, nightlife, and become better informed so you are a much better employee or employer. Take advantage of the benefits offered. As a retired member I still enjoy being a part of ISA. If you are reading this you are a Member, now become an active Member, join a Division, be an officer, a volunteer and give and take and above all enjoy. If you are a tech, take advantage of the CCST. If you are an employer insist that the techs and engineers become certified. Now for the question for this edition, who is now named corky for using an illegal bat? For a free card send answers to carlmcclain@earthlink.net or Carl McClain 9440 East Towago Drive, Prescott Valley, AZ 86314A free card for all the correct answers. In good times and bad times there is always the news, thanks for listening, and see you next time, Carl.
