Clergy and Musicians: Partners in Planning Holy Worship

The cleric and the church musician, a complex relationship if there ever was one! One seeming ly has the power of position and pastoring, the other seemingly has the power of art. Unable to produce holy worship without one anoth er, sometim es never the twain sha ll meet. In this ye ars confere nce, we w ill explore together the nature of power dynamics on the church staff, ways to bring out the pastor in the artist and the artist in the pastor, and creative partnership that comes through reconciliation . We w ill experience holy worship together planned by a distinctive and lively group of clergy and musicians with no b****ing allowed. CONFERENCE FACILITIES The Mississippi Conference on Church Music and Liturgy is held at Gray Center now one of the premier conference centers in this country with facilities unequaled! Please visit the Gray Center web site: www .graycenter.org Check it out! There are three cottages and an inn, all AIR C OND ITION ED; each room has two twin beds and a private bath. M ost sessions are held in the Chapel and m eals are prepared by a chef. There is ample display space for C liff Hill Music and a wond erful screen porch a nd patio overlooking the lake (perfect for the Champagne and Chocolate Extravaganza). A very sh ort, scenic walk takes you to each conference space. There are services daily, including Morning Prayer, Evenso ng at St. Philips Chu rch in Jackson (with a free evening following), and the Festival Eu charist at St. A ndrews Cathedra l.

FEES Fees include lodging, all meals, and packets of music for use in conference services: $600 -5:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday lunch $300 - 3:30 pm Friday through Sunday lunch
Private rooms may be available for an additional fee of $115. The conference reserves the right to limit the number of private rooms if needed to accommodate housing needs of all participants. Reservations with a $100 deposit are required by July 12. The deposit will be non-refundable, and is nontransferrable unless we are notified in writing no later than July 18. Some scholarship money is available for participants from Mississippi through the Diocese of Mississippi. If you are in need of scholarship assistance, please write to the Registrar. Check with your local church about financial assistance, as well.

RICHARD WEBSTER
Richard Webster is a composer, church musician, choral conductor and organist of wide renown. In June 2010 he was appointed Director of Music and Organist at Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston. As a composer he is in demand for commissioned anthems, organ and instrumental works, liturgical music and hymn tunes.

We are offering 12 weekend scholarships worth $300 each to anyone who is between the ages of 18 and 30. A brief letter of recommendation from your rector is required to receive this scholarship and should be sent in along with the registration form. These scholarships will be granted to the first 12 applicants and apply to participants from inside and outside the Diocese of Mississippi. This amount may also be applied to the full week of the conference.

DAVID ASHLEY WHITE


Dr. David Ashley White is currently the Director of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, where he is also professor of composition and theory. His choral anthems are widely performed. Davids hymns, some of which are found in the Hymnal 1982, Wonder, Love, and Praise, are also found in co llections pub lished by S elah.
