SPECIAL REPORT:
The GREEN Spaceship By the Lake?
Chicago, IL
Regardless of what you think about that spaceship near Lake Michigan, or football in general for that matter, Chicagos Soldier Field is making headlines. It was recently recognized as the first LEED-Certified NFL stadium in the country. No, it did not get this status because it is an actual spaceship relying on alien technology. It was certified because of including specifics such as the installation of energy efficient lighting as well as charging stations for fans that drive electric cars to the game. These two examples were part of the effort by the city to reduce costs, continue Chicagos commitment to green building initiatives, and also to gain recognition for its efforts by the NFL by obtaining LEED-Certified status. What the heck is LEED-Certified and why should you care? On the most basic level, it means that the building focuses on using greener practices and technology. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification criteria included (in Soldier Fields renovations) such things as promoting public transportation and procuring supplies within 50-100 miles of the stadium to cut down on fossil fuels impacts and costs. The Chicago Park District, the owner of the

Another of Emanuels persuasive arguments was the Chicago Police Departments (as well as other cooperating agencies) ability to handle the recent NATO event. I know, this may be a touchy subject depending on your views, and I do not want to get political, bit with only 100 or so arrests, you have to admit it did seem to go on without major incident. We were able to safely accommodate not only leaders around the globe, but the President and First Lady as well. Weather aside; other factors will certainly influence the NFLs decision about allowing Chicago to host a future Super Bowl. The turf at Soldier field is supposedly among the worst in NFL stadiums making it unsafe. The debate is ongoing to that point, but players experiences as well as just watching any game played there support the contention. And all of those seats added during renovations? Yeah, there may still not be enough to cater to the number of fans other Super Bowl stadiums do, so the city would have to consider adding additional seating. Last, but not least, is the fact that the State of Illinois is broke, the city is crying poor, and the event would cost millions. Who can afford to risk a financial loss similar to what the Olympics in London may face? I digress. This may just be a dream sparked by Chicagos decision to make smart renovation decisions at Soldier Field. At the very least, we should recognize with pride the LEED-Certification and look to examples such as that for buildings and home renovations in our own lives. It may cost a little more upfront, but it surely makes sense for our future generations. john@corcoranheating.com

I sit atop my soapbox in this months Two Cents with a scenario for you: Would you drive your car 180,000 miles without once changing the oil? Your furnace runs about 2,300 hours per year on average (no, not this past season), and your air conditioner an estimated 700 hours annually (probably more this summer). Thats the equivalent of operating a vehicle 3,000 hours @ 60 mph or 180,000 miles. Anyone not convinced yet? Run around the block with your mouth and nose duct taped shut. Youre likely going to have a heart attack, arent you? Guess what? Your air conditioning compressor, furnace and other HVAC components react much the same. They HAVE to breathe while running their marathons, especially on HOT days. What your system would really appreciate is a massage by one of our highly trained technicians. If you are one of many clients who only call us when there is a problem, do yourself a favor: wash your condenser coil (the big thing in the yard) and
