Steer clear of scams during your vacation

Vacations are a time to kick back, enjoy the sights and sounds and to recharge your batteries. Unfortunately, vacations are also prime time for scammers. While most people you encounter on a trip are not out to steal your hard-earned money or spoil your fun, staying alert and using caution can help you steer clear of rip-off artists. Here is a list of popular travel scams to avoid. Some are classics that have been effective for centuries. Splat, something lands on your shirt! A thief walks near you, presumably chomping on a hot dog. Instead, whats in the bun is a tube of mustard all the better to squirt the yellow condiment on you. As this ham-fisted Good Samaritan offers to help wipe off the mess, his partner in crime rifles through your pockets or grabs your bag. The basic idea is to distract you. Some variations: A respectable-looking person asks you for the time or directions, someone (frequently an old woman) falls down, a group of street kids create a disturbance or someone from above spills goo on you. In all these scenarios, be sure to hang on tight to your stuff. get a commission). Other cons: driving a much longer way to your destination or shortchanging you (more easily done if youre unfamiliar with the countrys currency). Reaching for the brass ring. A harmless looking person picks up a ring on the ground in front of you and asks if you dropped it. As you say, no, the person scrutinizes the ring and aha, he sees a mark that indicates the ring is pure gold. He then offers to sell it to you for a bargain price much higher than the legitimate price for this worthless piece of brass. Peek-a-boo, I see whats in your car. Dont leave valuables on the passenger seat or back seat. In tourist areas or busy city intersections, thieves hang out where theres a long red light. They spot rental cars and take a good look inside. If they like what they see, they may decide to smash the car window and run off with your belongings. A variation of this takes place when you leave your parked car at a tourist site. Unfortunately, once inside the car, the thief can then pop the trunk and take what you had locked inside there. The moral: whenever possible, never leave anything valuable in your car. Whats your number? Never give your credit card number over the phone unless you initiate the call. Thats a good rule to follow at all times. Beware of thieves, claiming to be a travel agent with a bargain vacation offer you cant pass up. And, while staying in the hotel, beware of phone calls from thieves, claiming to be the front desk and asking you to verify your card number. Just say no by hanging up.
