This unit has been created for you to develop skills and confidence in designing and applying over-comb techniques to produce short graduated haircut structures (often referred to as an over-comb taper cut). (Fig 1) It involves: planning short graduated haircut structures selecting and applying tools and equipment to complete short graduated haircut structures applying after-haircut finishing techniques the safe application of health and safety practices. The learning guide activities are designed to guide you through a structured cutting process. This process will build your confidence in creating a variety of short graduated designs using a variety of tools and equipment.

The commonly used terminology mens taper cut should not be confused with the cutting technique, taper cutting where bulk and length are removed simultaneously, producing tapered ends.

Analysis
A graduated cut is always combined with another shape of layering or solid. The characteristics of a short graduation are: rough texture two contrasting textural areas a weight line or area separating the two textures diamond shape (Fig 4) a blending into the natural hairline (no distinctly cut design line at the nape) (Fig 5) where required, the hair outside of the design line is shaved. A variety of design lines can be used to create a style. However, curved lines and shapes are more flattering for females, strong angular lines and square shapes are more suitable for males.

Fig 5 |
When analysing the structural arrangements of the cut, you will find that the hair is very short at the nape, graduating to longer lengths that form into the weight area just above the occipital bone. (Fig 6) The lengths and texture on the top are determined by the chosen style, such as a solid or layered interior.
Techniques
It became very obvious that the hair could not be held (projected) between the fingers to produce these very short effects. Therefore, over-comb techniques were developed and perfected to achieve the close-to-the-scalp lengths. (Figs 7, 8)
Fig 6 |
The techniques are based on the mathematical principles of angling the comb in relation to the scalp to achieve the graduation of lengths required.
Fig 7 |
Fig 8 |
This means that hair is held (projected) by the comb. The angle you hold the comb determines the amount of graduation. eg low graduation medium high (Figs 911) Remember that 90 projection and over produces layering.
