Economics of BANGLADAISH

1. Economic Growth It anticipates 7.2 percent economic growth in the coming fiscal year from increased export earnings and more remittances from Bangladeshis abroad. Finance Minister A.M.A. Muhith unveiled the budget for 2012-13 in Parliament amid a boycott of the proceedings by the opposition, who accuse the government of repressing its leaders and activists. Muhith said that growth in the fiscal year that ends this month was expected to be around 7 percent higher than the official Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics revised estimate of 6.3 percent. Muhith said the agency failed to take into account recent growth in agricultural production. The budget focuses on power and other infrastructure development to spur growth and aims to cap the deficit at five percent of gross domestic product. The minister said the government would install new oil-fired power plants and import power from neighboring countries such as India, Nepal and Bhutan to help cope with a shortage. Muhith said he was targeting a 22 percent increase in tax revenue by bringing more people under the tax net. Last years revenue collection increased largely thanks to a crackdown on tax evasion. Growth is expected to be driven largely by higher income from exports, especially of garment products, and increased remittances. Bangladesh mainly exports readymade garments to the United States and Europe, but is looking to increase deliveries to new markets including Japan and India. Already, about 10 million Bangladeshis work abroad, mostly in the Middle East, sending home US $10 billion each year. The government said it hopes to send more people abroad in the coming year.

2. Market Structure
Organized retail outlets are relatively few and remain concentrated in the major cities, but they do sell imported products. The off-take by consumers is limited (less than 5 percent of total food consumption comes from these outlets). They usually procure their products from importers or distributors for imported items, and from distributors or suppliers for the local products. Organized sector retailers normally maintain established supply lines (drawing from establishments with storage capacity) for imported products, and access both established and casual supply lines (once-inawhile suppliers with no storage) for local products. Depending on the size of the outlets, they engage 200 to 400 distributors or sub-distributors (dealers) for consistent availability of their commodities. Most importers source their goods in mixed containers from the country of origins or from consolidators in Dubai or Singapore, except those that arrive in high volumes, like fresh fruits

Bangladesh Trade: Growth The government of Bangladesh undertook significant steps during the 1980s. Consequently there was a tremendous increase in the export of ready-made-garments and knitwear, which garnered maximum foreign exchange for the country. Cheap labor and low conversion costs are the major factors behind the growth of Bangladeshs garment industry. Over 3 million Bangladeshis (90% women) are employed in this industry. Bangladesh shares excellent trade relations with the US, showing noteworthy trade surplus with the latter. The country is an active partner of the Asia Pacific Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization. A number of export processing zones have been set up by the government to enhance economic growth by attracting foreign investment.
