'ROUNDUP BIACTIVE
GENERAL INFORMATION
Roundup Biactive is a foliar-acting herbicide with broad-spectrum activity. It is translocated from treated green growth to underground roots, rhizomes and stolons, providing control of both annual and perennial weeds. Applied pre-harvest of specified crops, Roundup Biactive provides, in addition to weed control, a diverse range of harvest management benefits accruing from the removal of green material from the crop. Leaf symptoms, being a reddening then yellowing of the foliage, are first seen on the grass weeds but take longer to appear on broad-leaved weeds. Choosing the best time to spray To maximise the effectiveness of Roundup Biactive, it is important to spray when weeds are at their most susceptible stage of growth, to ensure translocation of Roundup Biactive throughout to treated weeds, both above and below ground. All target weeds must be actively growing at spraying: PERENNIAL GRASSES must have full emergence of healthy, green leaf. (Common couch, for example, becomes susceptible at the onset of tillering and new rhizome growth, which usually occurs when plants have 4-5 leaves, each with 10-15 cm of new growth). PERENNIAL BROAD-LEAVED WEEDS are most susceptible around the flowering stage. ANNUAL GRASSES AND BROAD-LEAVED WEEDS should have at least 5cm of leaf, or 2 expanded true leaves, respectively. BRACKEN should be treated after frond tips are unfurled, but pre-senescence. Do not cultivate before application, especially when perennial weeds are the intended target, because this will impair active growth and may break up root fragments which, having no leaves, will escape treatment and may regrow. Similarly, treated growth should be left undisturbed for the recommended interval after application, to ensure complete translocation of Roundup Biactive. Active growth may also be impaired by adverse weather and other conditions, with the result that weed control may be reduced. Tank mixtures and use of adjuvants The unique biactivator system in Roundup Biactive ensures that no additional adjuvant is required, at any label rate, for effective weed control in all arable situations. Roundup Biactive is also physically and biologically compatible with a broad range of herbicides. Manufacturers' recommendations should always be consulted before use of additional herbicides in tank mixture with Roundup Biactive, and continuous agitation maintained throughout. In certain forestry applications, Mixture B may be added at a rate of 2% of the spray volume. Do not apply to edible crops, grassland or aquatic weeds. Do not tank-mix Roundup Biactive when using rotary atomiser sprayers.

'ROUNDUP BIACTIVE'
Application equipment and techniques Best results are achieved by correct application, using properly calibrated and well maintained equipment. The fundamental application requirements are as follows: SPRAY QUALITY A MEDIUM or COARSE quality spray (BCPC definition) should be applied, using either a conventional hydraulic or rotary atomiser sprayer. Where rotary atomisers are used, their droplet diameter must fall within the range 200300 microns. FILLING THE SPRAYER Half fill the spray tank with water and, on tractor-mounted sprayers, start agitation. Add the appropriate quantity of Roundup Biactive and tank-mixture product. Top up the tank to the level required. SPRAYER HYGIENE It is essential to thoroughly clean out the entire sprayer system, using a recommended detergent cleaner, between applying Roundup Biactive and other pesticides. General Cautions Applications of lime, fertiliser, farmyard manure and pesticides should be delayed until 5 days after application of Roundup Biactive. Do not tank-mix Roundup Biactive with adjuvants, pesticides or fertilisers, except as specified under: Directions for Use - Tank Mixtures. Reduced control is likely where weed growth is impaired by natural senescence, drought, high temperature, a covering of dust, flooding or severe / prolonged frost at, or immediately after, application. Take extreme care to avoid drift, particularly when using near or alongside hedgerows. A rain-free period of at least 6 hours (see note below) and preferably 24 hours should follow application. After application, large concentrations of decaying foliage, stolons, roots or rhizomes should be dispersed or buried by thorough cultivation before crop drilling. Note: Latest trials results show an improved Rain fastness - Consult your distributor for details.

SPRAY APPLICATION EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES
TRACTOR MOUNTED OVERALL APPLICATORS

Conventional Hydraulic Sprayers Sprayer and Nozzle Selection. All machines capable of applying accurately 80-250 l/ha (7-23 gal/ac) as a 'MEDIUM' or 'COARSE' quality spray (BCPC definition) within a pressure range of 1.5-2.5 bars (21- 35 psi) may be used. For application of Roundup Biactive pre-harvest of crops it is essential to use a sprayer whose boom may be raised to the correct height. Water Volume: For general use 200-250 l/ha (18-23 gal/ac) is the preferred volume range. For specific uses, volumes may be reduced to 80-120 l/ha (7-11 gal/ac) by selecting correct nozzles, pressures of application and tractor forward speeds. Spray Pressure. Pressures must be related to tractor forward speed, desired water volume and nozzle type. A range of 1.5-2.5 bars (21-35 psi) must be used to keep the risk of spray drift to a minimum. Tractor Forward Speed.. Speed of travel must be related to nozzle output characteristics. The typical range is from 5-10 kph (3-6mph). The slower speeds should be selected for applications preharvest of crops and where soil conditions would cause excessive boom bounce and yaw. Filling the Sprayer. Half fill the spray tank with water and start agitation. Add recommended quantity of herbicide, top-up tank with water to required level.

'ROUNDUP BIACTIVE
Calibration: Before using a sprayer and especially when nozzles have been changed it is essential to calibrate the sprayer by checking the output of at least one nozzle for each separate boom section of the sprayer. Operation in the field.. Check the following before starting to spray: That the nozzles are aligned evenly at the correct angle to the direction of travel. That the boom is level over its width. The boom height permits the correct pattern of spray overlap on the target weeds.

'ROUNDUP BIACTIVE
HANDHELD APPLICATIONS 1. KNAPSACK SPRAYER
This may be used to apply Roundup Biactive on Set-aside, in Forestry, Top Fruit Orchards, Aquatic and Around the Farm 'Non-Crop' areas. Normal water volume is 200-400 l/ha (18-35 gal/ac) but by fitting low volume nozzles, such as the Cooper Pegler VLV 100 (Tel. 01.444 242526) or the Lurmark ANI (Tel. 0954. 60097) in conjunction with an appropriate 100 mesh filter, it can be reduced to 100 l/ha (9 gal/ac). All applications to be as a 'MEDIUM' or 'COARSE' quality spray (BCPC definition). Before using a knapsack sprayer, it is advisable to calibrate accurately in order to be able to apply the correct dose rate of Roundup Biactive and application volume for the area to be covered (see calibration procedure section). ROUNDUP BIACTIVE MAY BE APPLIED IN MEDIUM VOLUME THROUGH KNAPSACK SPRAYERS USING A DILUTION RATE OF 1 PART OF ROUNDUP BIACTIVE IN 50 PARTS OF SPRAY LIQUID. EXAMPLE.. To apply 41/ha (2.8 pts/ac) of Roundup Biactive in 200 l/ha (18 gal/ac) with a Knapsack of total capacity 10 litres (2 gals) add 200 ml (1/3 pint) of Roundup Biactive to 9.8 litres (15 1/2 pints) of water. With this dilution 2 and a walking speed of 1 metre/sec and a swath width 1 metre (3.3 feet), a total of 500m (540 sq yds) will be covered. To apply 6 l/ha (4.2 pts/ac) add 300ml (1/2 pint) Roundup Biactive to 9.7 litres (15 pints) of water to cover a similar area. Where low volume hydraulic nozzles are fitted, application volume may be reduced to 100 l/ha (9gal/ac) (see Knapsack spraying - easy application guide).

ENSURE WEED LEAVES ARE NOT SPRAYED TO THE POINT OF RUN OFF.

Knapsack Spraying Sprayer Calibration Procedure: 1 .Carry out trial run by walking (at normal spraying speed) over a distance of 20 metres carrying a half filled spray tank over a typical farm track. (Clearly mark out 20 metres being aware that you should move at normal spraying speed over total distance). 2. Measure the time it takes you to cover this 20 metre distance at normal spraying speed. 3. From the table below, estimate forward speed from the time recorded for 20 metres.
Time in sec for 20 metres Speed in kph Speed in mph

36 2.0 1.2

30 2.5 1.6
