Bull Or Bear... What Should We Do?

The secret to investing is not timing the market but rather time in the market. The month of May has not been kind to the average investor. This month has been the first monthly loss in eight months. The emotional investor gets worried, the long-term investor knows this is the time to consider adding additional dollars to their investment portfolio. During the last 50 years, we have had 12 bull markets and 11 bear marketsthe bull markets averaged going up about 100% and the bear markets on the average, declined 15% to 30%, said William J. ONeil, Investors Business Daily publisher. And the typical bull market lasted 3.75 years and the classic bear market lingered only nine months. That tells us that investors long-term goals should utilize Professional Management as they ride the markets ups and downs. And, did you know that in the last 100 years we have had more than 25 bear market slumps (natural, normal corrections of the previous bull market advance) and every single time the market recovered and ultimately soared into new high ground. Thats fantastic. Its one of the greatest success stories in the world. This too tells us that investors should stay aboard with professional management. When markets become volatile, a lot of people try to guess when stocks will bottom out. In the meantime, they often park their investments in cash, which currently is paying next to nothing. Unfortunately they continue to suffer even further because of the continuous and on going impact of inflation. Unfortunately a majority of this type of investor does not guess the bottom and starts to invest when the market has mostly recovered. Thus, they miss the better part of the recovery. We suggest the following steps to successful investing: 1. Seek the counsel of a conservative investment professional. 2. Understand the productive potential of being an owner, not a loaner. 3. Through your Financial Advisor utilize the well known professionally managed mutual funds as your retirement vehicle. CONTINUED ON LAST PAGE

PA R A D E I N F O R M AT I O N
We are excited to announce that our theme for this years parade is Courage. We celebrate our freedoms and we do so with absolute gratitude to our military personnel that demonstrate the courage it takes to place their lives on the line protecting our very way of life. We invite any veteran or current member serving in the military to join our parade and be honored for your service. We will also pay tribute to our local elected officials and City employees that that have displayed remarkable vision and have embarked upon path of revitalization that will lead our City through these difficult economic times. The Streetcar project, Central Point Redevelopment, Community Connection, the Citys New Housing program, and the massive Promise Neighborhoods initiative clearly demonstrate a courageous vision for the future growth and development of the City. A significant part of the parade theme this year is the recognition of the Courage that is needed to fight personal adversity.

PARADE

SPONSORED BY:

Our 2012 Grand Marshall for the parade this year is Mary Nickles. Mary has been a part of the most successful anchor team of the Channel 2 morning news teams for the past 21 years. Last November, Mary discovered she had been stricken with breast cancer. She made her condition public in the hope that she would inspire her viewers to seek early screening. She has received countless emails that have applauded her courage, as well as real life success stories that have resulted in early cancer detection. Mary is indeed a courageous example of someone that has not only faced an adversarial situation head on; she seized the opportunity and elevated it to the highest level and most certainly saved lives in the process. She serves as an inspiration to us all and we are hopeful that the citizens of South Salt Lake show up in force on the morning of July 4th and honor her as our 2012 Grand Marshall.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
As we head into the Summer months, activities within the City are abundant. However, like many other government entities, funding is shrinking and the result is trying to fill the financial gaps that have been created. Our after school programs in the City have taken quite a hit and it is vital that we find other means to continue to exceptional work that continues to address the diverse needs of our young people in the City. Even some of our time honored community events have been subjected to the less than robust economic environment. For decades, the members of the Chamber of Commerce have been a significant support system to the community and now, more than ever you help is vital to the continued revitalization of the South Salt Lake Community. The following are some of the activities that have will be taking place in the next few weeks that are in need of some additional financial support or even some volunteer hours to help make the events take place without the appearance of a reduction in funding. The 2012 Fourth of July Parade: We are in search of funding that will help make the parade a success this year. If you or someone you love has perhaps been afflicted with cancer or you have someone serving military and wish to help us provide a great inspirational tribute, please contact the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce as soon as possible. The Freedom Festival parade has a rich and successful history in our City. The economics of our day has forced some rather difficult funding decisions to be made and unfortunately, the parade must fully rely on external funding from our community. This is a great cause and our theme is indicative of the wonderful spirit of support and activism that has been the very foundation of the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. Please let us know if you want to join with us and make the parade an event to remember!

BEAR OR BULL...
Enjoy the power of compounding over your accumulating years. If it sounds to good to be trueit probably isnt true. Avoid any promises of guaranteed high returns. If they were really valid and safethe line to invest would run from here to California. If you are not surego home and sleep on it.

We were honored when the Chamber of Commerce asked us to share our thoughts on the recent volatility of the market. Hopefully some of the information and the ideas we have shared will give you peace of mind and encourage you to talk to your Financial Advisor before you make emotional and rash decisions which could radically impact your long term retirement goals. We have been proud and active members of the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce for 51 years. The service they render to the business and residential community is immense. If you have a concern or problem give them a call. They stand ready to help!
