Over 10 Lac aspirants wrote Engineering entrance exams in the year 2011 and only 15000 students made it to IITs. This survey is made to assist remaining students who will enrol in Non IITs tech school.
In order to bring you most exhaustive Tech School rankings we surveyed 25000 engineering graduates from 200 Non IITs Tech Schools across India. The parameter we selected to rank these colleges is SALARY or in other word the Earning Potential these Tech Schools offer to their students. The idea behind selecting salary as judging parameter is to give engineering aspirants a better understanding about engineering educations cost versus returns, which should help them identify the Tech school apart from IITs which offers value for money in true sense of word.

Methodology
Traditionally, Tech-schools rankings have been trying to tell us which Engineering colleges we should be looking at in the coming admissions season. However, most of them have not succeeded in capturing the order of tech schools that students should actually opt for. The primary reason for this is that most of ranking agencies who conduct Tech-School surveys rely on the data inputs provided by the colleges and based on which the ranking computation is carried out. Yes we do agree that there is a thorough validation and cross checking of data inputs is done, but still it leaves a small open gap that can make difference to actual standings. Digital Mailers independently conducts its Tech-Schools Salary survey without any direct inputs from the colleges. This year survey was conducted by sampling over 25000 Engineering graduates from 200 Top Tech-Schools across India. On an average we have sampled around 30 60 students from each college depending on the batch size. After sampling we conducted a random check by individually speaking to the recipients to verify the facts. As we had an extended data collection period this year it has helped us in enhancing our data accuracy. Salary figures and other stats represented in the report are close to reality but we would like to inform our readers that there could be slight variations for some colleges salary figures, as the survey was done using a statistical model.

The million dollar question that plagues many brilliant minds when they slog through their college courses is whether the effort will culminate in good placements. How do you define 'good' placements anyway? Here's a peek-a-boo at the current placement scenario in the best engineering colleges of India. Placements can give anyone jitters, from the "god" of coding to the lethargic, uninterested, time incompetent sloth, and of course, the majority of the people who fall in between these extremes. Campus placements often have more drama and nail biting experiences than what Ekta Kapoor can possibly concoct. It can throw curve balls that even the seasoned batters will find it difficult to tackle. True to the spirit of the game, it churns out one hit wonders who become the instant talk of the whole campus, not because they weren't good enough, but for the simple fact that there were others who were much better than these students. The combined tension, drama, anxiety and eventual relief surpasses what even Sachin and his devotees might feel for his 100th century. But the whole debacle highlights some important points which have to be kept in mind to jump off from the summit with flying colors.

In the current scenario, the best 'tech' jobs are being whisked away by the Computer Science students. Although this hardly comes as a surprise, what is important to glean from this is that the most important skills required by companies is a proficiency in data structures, algorithms and coding. If you have these skills without being a Computer Science student, you have almost an equal chance to crack companies. Continuing in the same breath, many MNCs (read Microsoft, Google, IBM, Oracle, TCS, Infosys, Cognizent to name a few) are vying for students from top engineering colleges by giving them attractive packages. Mostly centered in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune, it is a great prestige for students also to be inducted in these companies. Slowly but steadily, the number of foreign placements (Sony, Facebook, Epic Systems) is on the rise too. Till a few years ago, almost all major market leaders in various verticals use to recruit only from IITs, & NITs, though with the changing current scenario MNCs have started recognizing the potential in students from the top private colleges of major cities like BITs, RV, IIIT and MIT. In addition, another coveted profile is in financial institutions. Banks are in need of engineers with good analytical thinking and number crunching abilities. So, if you don't want to do a job in any pure engineering domain, these high paying finance and consultancy jobs in companies like Goldman Sachs, Tower Research, McKinsey, etc. come to the rescue. In fact, these jobs pay more than most of the engineering jobs and hence, are often a destination for people seeking huge chunks of money while agreeing to work a few hours more than their counter parts in engineering jobs. Another vista that has opened up recently is through online coding events. This is specifically for Computer Science students. There are contests like codesprint, which is basically a programming contest, but with a different end result. Many startups like Dropbox, Twitter, etc. based in USA shortlist students based on their performance in various questions and then schedule an interview with -

them on Skype. If everything works out well, you might be on the way to Uncle Sam's country to pursue your own American dream. Generally, campus placements start off with a pre placement talk by the company, where company representatives try their best to glorify the company and solve the doubts of the eager students. A written aptitude test follows. Thereafter, there might be an optional Group Discussion round, but most of the companies move on directly to the personal interviews. Finance and Consultancy companies have a slightly different approach. They normally shortlist students based on the resume and thereafter have a case study round followed by interviews. Aptitude tests require a quite thorough knowledge of your core discipline in addition to good mathematical skills. Most of the questions may appear easy prima facie, but be warned; they might turn out to be trick questions. If you haven't had much practice solving multiple choice questions, it is advisable to solve some before tests being just to get into the groove. The aptitude round often has a lot of questions to be solved in little time. Hence, speed and accuracy play very important roles here.Interviews are a different ball game altogether. It is often advisable to go through online forums where interview questions are discussed. But tread carefully, for this might act like a double edged sword and come back to haunt you during the interviews. Online forums should be used to get an idea what you might expect and learn to think in that direction. But if the same question is asked during the interview, it is often advisable to inform the interviewer that you have seen the question before instead of trying to pretend to work your way out - they can see through you. One of the most important things to keep in mind during interviews is that whenever asked a question, you should say out loud what you are thinking. Often, they would not expect you to arrive at the correct solution, but would merely want to know your thought process. In addition, when asked about your resume, be prepared to answer a battery of questions with whatever you answer. This just means that you should know your resume, projects and related fields inside out. Finance and consultancy jobs focus more on analytical skills, throwing open ended questions and seemingly absurd estimate questions at you. The trick is not to get stumped by these, but instead, slowly work your way out of the hole you have been put into. These questions have no right or wrong answer, it's up to you to concoct the right answer and convince the interviewers about its correctness. In addition, they focus on mathematics, particularly on probability questions. Having knowledge of financial terms and how things in the finance world work is a plus, but not a necessity. It is important to rise about the rat race, prove your mettle to the interviewers and convince them that you are the best person for the job. Though it can be gleaned sometimes that luck plays a pivotal, it is much more important to be confident during placements. Opportunities are many and varied, just keep yourself aware of them and strike the iron when it is hot.
