NGCOM WORLD Page 1

ABSTRACT

NGCOM is proposing to setup a fully functional computer/internet centre in the local government schools in River State with the aim of equipping the eager young minds with the necessary access to information so as to put them at par with their colleges all over the world. The computer/internet centre is a three part infrastructure setup Backup power, VSAT and LAN. The backup power infrastructure is made up of a solar panel assembly, an inverter system and a battery bank. The VSAT is made up of a 1.2m dish, the civil works and a Modem device. The LAN is made up of a switch, Ethernet cabling (CAT 5), trunking and personal computers (PC). The computer/internet centre is geared towards Providing young Nigerian students computing equipments that are standard all over the world Providing fast and reliable internet access to the secondary schools Add value and recognition to Rivers State secondary schools Asides the infrastructure, NGCOM will provide a one year support and training for the personnel on the equipment set-up.

INTRODUCTION

The emergence of Nigeria into the computer age can not be emphasized enough and the best way for the country to grow in this new age is by developing the eager young minds of Nigeria who are the future. There are many schools of learning with large syllabus of study, but there is a need to ensure that the information passed to the young minds is up to date and not obsolete. There should be a means for the students to see what other students of their level are doing in other schools all over the world. For proper nurturing of the young minds, NGCOM proposes a literature review of the Computer/Internet Centre project. This proposal includes methodology of project execution, Budget justification, a schedule for the completion of the project.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

NGCOM proposes to review the documentation on the topology of the various schools and building layouts to effectively create a viable network. In this proposal, NGCOM will achieve the following goals: Install an adequate VSAT link that will carry the capacity of the schools. Design and install backup power for the computer/Internet centre. Design and implement a local area network (LAN) for the computers in the Computer/Internet Centre. Support the facility for a period of one year. Training of the personnel of the school that will be in charge of managing the facility.

According to the bandwidth required for a swift browsing experience, the location of the school, NGCOM proposes to site a VSAT installation on the premises. This is to provide the school with access to the internet.

Computer devices are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations and outages. From technical reviews, it has been found as one of the greatest destroyers of hard drives. NGCOM proposes to install a battery bank that will supply an inverter system constant DC voltage that it will convert to AC voltage of the same voltage and frequency as that of PHCN. There will be stabilizers to ensure that PHCN fluctuations dont affect the setup. NGCOM will also supply a solar panel unit to ensure that the battery bank will be constantly charging under conditions of no source of primary power supply.

The various computers will require a form of internetworking that will enable them communicate with one another, which will bring about sharing of computer resources, such as file, file printers, etc. NGCOM will have a wired LAN setup running Ethernet networking system. The network will be made up of a server, handling the computer/Internet centres administrative functions. Also switches which will be the access point for the computer network.

The infrastructure requires little or no supervision, but as is a known fact with computer equipments and internetworks, support will be needed from time to time when certain alterations occur on the network that was not anticipated. NGCOM will provide a ONE year facility support to ensure the effective performance of the computer centre.

NGCOM is poised to bring added value to any and every organisation or group that it provides services. To that note, there will be a training of the personnel selected by the school, on the computer/internet centre, the various equipments and how to carryout troubleshooting techniques on the facility if need be. This will avail the selected staff the extra computer and networking skill that will improve their overall abilities.

PROJECT PROCEDURE

This section represents NGCOMs method of achieving the said objectives in the previous section. This is a three stage process that will be summarized for simplicity. Site survey and customer needs evaluation: A survey of the location will have to be carried out so as to locate the most suitable point to site the VSAT that will not be disrupted by students moving around. Also evaluate the location of the Computer/Internet Centre, to take into consideration the power access and security issues. This will normally take a four to five days. Network design and planning: With the information gathered from the survey and interaction with the customer, a network design will be created and tested to obtain optimum efficiency of the network. This will take care of the network layout and design to meet the various locations and network needs of the schools. This planning and testing stage takes two to three weeks. Design implementation and execution: This the actual installation of the Computer/Internet centres. This stage will deal with the VSAT assembling, civil works fabrication and installation, network implementation and completion of the facility. This will be within 3 weeks of commencement of work.
