Most of the businesses in Burgersfort had to close on Monday and Tuesday because of chaos in the streets which started at the taxi rank. In the photograph a Policeman hurls a brick in an effort to clean the main road at Castle Centre, while the mob/marchers/hawkers on the other side of the wall make their way to the Greater Tubatse Municipalitys offices - article on page 2.

Two days
The heart of the problem this week in Burgersfort is that a group of hawkers as well as some taxis arrived at the taxi rank at the Khadima Centre on Monday, to find that the rank and hawkers stalls were in the process to be demolished. These hawkers are mainly aligned to an unrecognised group under the leadership of Mr Jackson Tjatji, a businessman and former councillor. The reason why the old rank needs to be demolished is that the land forms part of the Burgersfort Mall (the smaller one of the three mall developments) just across the road. The developer is supposed to erect a new rank and a number of hawkers stalls at the development, but in the meantime a temporary taxi rank has been erected on the open space across Autozone. Hawkers and taxis were supposed to move there, but they say they cannot do business at the new premises as everything they need are not in place. Furthermore, inner city taxis hiked their tariffs because they now have to drive a few hundred metres further to pick up and drop off passengers. The occupants of the old taxi rank were furious on Monday, reckoning that if they cannot do business, nobody should and started creating chaos in the streets. Tyres were burned, and businesses who did not

want to close were threatened. At least one supermarket will not have specials this week because stock could not be delivered and at one business windows were broken. Police threw a couple of tear gas canisters into the unruly crowd and one person with sticks and stones in her hand were arrested. No rubber bullets were fired according to Colonel Ben Nienaber , acting station commander of Burgersfort Police Station. On Tuesday everything remained closed for most of the day. A crowd gathered at the municipal offices where negotiations were taking place between all the parties in the brawl. A small mob ran through town, threatening small businesses to close shop, while some other larger supermarkets and shops were allowed to open their doors. Greater Tubatse Municipalitys Communications Manager, Mr Thabiso Mokoena, told Platinum Gazette that affected parties reached an agreement. According to Mr Mokoena the mall developer will develop the temporary rank across Autozone to such an extent that hawkers and taxis can move there as soon as possible. In the meantime hawkers and taxis will still be allowed at the old rank at the Khadima Centre. Another meeting with the Mayor will also possibly be held soon. By Wednesday, everything calmed down.

commercial and economic standpoint and that the project would rapidly transform the Company from prospector to miner of PGM metals.
The BFS found that the capital footprint of the project carried substantial savings on both the surface and underground costs, which would have been incurred with the development of a mining operation on the UG2 reef. There were about 13.5-million ounces of resource in the underlying UG2 reef, and Mphahlele said that the company was currently preparing a detailed valuation on these resources. With the optimised BFS now complete, the company and its advisers would be in a position to complete joint venture development negotiations, Mphahlele said. Swiss-listed Xstrata holds the option to acquire a 50% interest in the Garatau project by fully funding the development costs. If it makes use of this development option, the diversified company would also be entitled to fund up to 50% of Nkwes larger Tubatse project.

Mr Sipho Libambo said: They must keep it. It will be against what we are used to over December. It will be chaos if they cancel it.
Ms Jeaneth Maupa said: They must keep it public holidays. Christmas is our big day. Even other countries celebrate it.
Mr Charles Mafane said: It must stay as it is. There is no need to change it. Christmas has been celebrated like this for centuries. Below: Mr Eric Ndukula and Ms Lovey Ndukula said: It must be kept. We know that Christmas is the day we celebrate Jesus birth and Good Friday when He died for us on the cross. It is not only South Africans who celebrate it, but the whole world. With them is Nkateko. Mnr.
Links: Me. Megan van der Merwe s: Nee, ek dink nie dis n goeie idee om die publike vakansiedae vir Kersdag en Goeie Vrydag weg te vat nie. Below: Mr Brian Ledwaba and Mr Mogale Maphalo said: They must make the other religions special days also holidays and keep ours.
Left below: Mr Thomas Mabanna said: It must be public holidays. In Christianity we want everyone to be Christians. If we cancel the holiday it will convince people that Christ is nothing. Right: Ms Kholo Modiba and Ms Prudence Mabilo said: They should keep them. It is not about a holiday. They have meaning. Other religions must propose their needs and then it must be decided from there. Everyone has a right to practice their religion. Here in Burgersfort we as Christians have to tolerate chanting by other religions every day at a certain time. If we tolerate the way they celebrate their religion they should tolerate that we use a public holiday to celebrate ours. With them are Thato and Kganya. Right: Ms. Glory Maja said: They must keep them as they are. We are used to celebrating them with our families.
Me. Suzan Bestenbier s: Hulle kan dit nie wegvat nie. Dit is dan tot in die Bybel.
Mr Magerule Sekonya said: They should leave it as it is. Not everybody is Christian, but the majority of the people are. It has become a culture and it would inconvenience so many people.
Mnr. Roux Meller, Me. Theresa Meyer en mnr. Steven Smith s: Hulle moet 16de Desember as Geloftedag terugbring. Kersdag en Goeie Vrydag is not negotiable. Dis erkende internasionale vakansiedae.
