Old Business 4.1 a) Environment and Beautification Projects Signage and graphic design project update

Rene Germain requested the electronic copy of the latest sign topper design, for submission to the sign shop; Brian will forward this straightaway.

2 Richard Munn will include the design in the draft business case for the project, and the draft will be reviewed at the next meeting (Jan. 2012). Chair Munn inquired about the status of the application policy being submitted by Rene. A discussion ensued about the new structure being adopted by City Council, whereby there will be standing committees to deal with such matters. This is intended to provide a more efficient and interactive process for applicants than the current method of addressing the full Council. Chair Munn noted that the response to the neighbourhood survey on the project was largely positive. It is hoped that when the application policy is in place, our application to Planning will be processed expeditiously. A mock-up of the topper should be available soon. b) Mural project Baker Street update

Bernice Hibbs gave a short recap of the project, and indicated that she was awaiting feedback from the teachers at Sudbury Secondary (and potentially two other area schools) regarding their involvement. [Secy note: please refer to Sept. and Oct. minutes for more detail.] The group discussed the possible expansion of the project to include improvement of the retaining wall adjacent to Red Oak Villa, and the one on the east side of Mackenzie St. between Bloor and Kathleen Sts. Cst. Ken Birtch described the local Myths and Mirrors initiative, and a collaboration among it, the NOAH group, and Better Beginnings Better Futures. The intention is to undertake mural and other artistic projects on a large scale, involving the public at large, in order to highlight and beautify appropriate landmarks in the area. It was suggested that there might be an opportunity to share resources between our project and theirs.

c)

Website design update

Cynthia Mellaney reported on the website status. The site is to be located on weebly.com, and Cynthia is currently researching the current site (uptowncan.com) to make the transition. Cynthia also expressed her intention to produce periodical newsletters and other information resources for our CAN. Chair Munn expressed the appreciation of the group for the work being undertaken by Cynthia. d) Recycling initiative - Tim Hortons

Councilor Landry-Altmann reported that she has contacted the regional manager for Tim Hortons in this matter, and will follow up with him. e) Louis Street Community Association update June Davis

June Davis provided an update on the activity at Louis St. They are continuing work on getting an additional room for arts and crafts, TV

3 movies/presentations, and the like. They also wish to provide literacy support for youth in her area. June mentioned that the Ten Rainbows Childrens Foundation and a number of other groups have expressed interest in providing financial and material support for her initiative, and she is anxious to obtain appropriate space to accommodate such resources. She is also seeking assistance for the planning and management of the undertakings. Ken Birtch and Richard Munn made reference to possible resources such as co-op student placements and other employee training programs. Councilor Landry-Altmann announced to the group that June had won the Community Leader of the Year award presented by the Greater Sudbury Police Services. f) Connect the Creek donation status

Chair Munn reported that the donation to the Connect the Creek group was received, with thanks. It was noted by the group that a number of challenges remain in the implementation of the project. Councilor Landry-Altmann noted that starting in January, the committees will be meeting on Mondays and Tuesdays, so her attendance at our meetings will depend on her committee involvements. She also mentioned that following the survey of the path leading north from Hnatyshyn Park, a significant cleanup (following CPTED guidelines) has been implemented, and that the area is much improved with respect to unsavory activities. 5.
