Summer Scheme Gets Underway

Springboard South Tyneside and Springboard Sunderland recently launched the Summer of a Lifetime National Citizen programme with two successful taster sessions at Hetton Lyons Park near Sunderland and Druridge Bay, Northumberland. The scheme supports 16-17 year olds from all backgrounds to work together, take on new challenges, make a difference, have fun and the best bit is that there are still places available! At the taster event most of the young people, who were brought along by their parents/carers, took a little time to settle in; but after much encouragement from the staff, were soon ready to get stuck in. During the activity a number of individuals demonstrated a lot of confidence and assisted the other team members which was great to witness. Following the successful event, all participants completed the sign up information to enrol on to the Summer of a Lifetime programme which is open to all 16 and 17 year old school leavers this summer.

The young people of South Tyneside will get the opportunity to expand their horizons by trying something new whilst making new and lasting friendships. The scheme is supported by Summer of a Lifetime National Citizen Service programme, with V and the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy

University Partnership benefits local charities

A sustainable project with Sunderland University will continue this year. The project helps Springboard South Tyneside learners comple warehousing qualifications but also benefits the British Heart Foundation as well as other local charities.
Springboard South Tyneside got involved in the project when the University needed assistance in clearing out the halls of residence where students had left unwanted belongings. The amount of possessions left behind created quite an operation for our warehousing team who got to work with the logistics and storage of the items. Everything is recycled with donations going to local charities such as Womens Refuge, Marthas Kitchen, The Salvation Army, The Community Regeneration Organisation and the Homeless. Our learners also volunteer their spare time to do car boot sales and help raise money for other charities, such as Barnardos. Through these donations todate The British Heart Foundation has received 14,853.75 raised from the programme. Project Manager Shelagh Lamb said: This has been a great initiative for all concerned, the University has the hall cleared, our learners get great experience managing the warehousing and the local charities benefit from the proceeds. We hope to make more money this year for many worthy Causes.
