The freedom to grow in godliness - to naturally express Christs character through your own personality - is in large part dependent on a deliberate cultivation of the spiritual disciplines. Far from being legalistic, restrictive, or binding, as they are often perceived, the spiritual disciplines are actually the means to unparalleled spiritual liberty.

Father Honor
I do realize that Fathers Day was a week ago, but there were other matters which needed to be emphasized in last weeks article. I sought to listen to my father and not despise my mother (Proverbs 23:22). Please allow some very personal recollections. It was 12 years ago this summer that my dad died following triple bypass surgery. He told me just before how much he loved our church: God is doing a special thing there in Naples. We had hoped that they would be able to move here from Tupelo, Mississippi where they had relocated a few years before from Phoenix. He wanted to work with the Carpenters Crew team. Though 84, he was like Caleb who declared: I want that mountain. On the morning of the operation, I told Hayes Wicker, Sr. that he was my hero and that I was proud of him and prayed with some of the family before he was wheeled away. After I had verbally prayed, he then unexpectedly, even though in a weak condition, prayed out loud, Lord, thank you that Your blood covers my sins. As he had written years before in a personal testimony for a witnessing class, he said, I feel the full assurance that my sins have been covered and forgiven. He then said, Good-bye, Hayes. I said, No, Ill see you later. After the surgery, I had an impression not to join my mother for dinner but to go back and try to encourage my father with his breathing. I said, I love you. Barely able to breath, he responded, I love you, Hayes. Minutes later I was called back because of a sudden downturn and last-ditch effort with shock paddles. During his last minutes on this earth, the Lords Word came to me in a unique way and prepared me to be able to break the news to my mother. In just a few weeks, Hayes and Kittie would have been married 60 years. On various occasions, he lovingly sacrificed in order to place my welfare ahead of his career. In order to save my life, they were forced to sell their business and new house and begin all over again in Arizona. Five years later, under pressure to move or be terminated, again he considered my health and refused to compromise his value of love for family. Going almost a year without work, God continued to work in his life. As a trouble-shooter with International Shoe Company, he would sometimes uncover corruption but refused to budge even though a private store owner might try to leverage him or intimidate him. I remember one particularly difficult experience in a border town of California and Mexico, and even with the threat of possible violence, he stood up to a businessman who was also the mayor of the town. It is not true that every man has his price. Moral standards must be upheld, regardless of the consequences. I honor my dad and pray that I will continue to live out his legacy and that all of us will have the courage of our convictions.
