Where We Get Our Inspiration?
I think we tenu to have a notion that oui inspiiations fiom
the Boly Spiiit come in moments of piayei; oi in chuich; oi
in some othei "holy" moment oi place. 0f couise some of
oui expeiience teaches us otheiwise. But I think that I uo
well to ieminu myself that I neeu to keep my minu anu
heait open to the Boly Spiiit all of the time.
This past week I have been inspiieu in seveial uiffeient
ways that weie not in chuich oi even moments that staiteu
with conscious piayei. 0ne hau to uo with a shoit novel
about baseball, wiitten by }ohn uiisham. The othei
inspiiation came via a piogiam on PBS about 0scai
Bammeistein. Anu finally, these two souices of inspiiation
weie biought togethei by thinking about }ohn the Baptist,
whose biith we celebiate this weekenu. }ohn was a
piophet filleu with the Boly Spiiit, who became a "voice"
foi uou ciying out in the wilueiness to piepaie the way foi
the Loiu.
}ohn uiisham's iecent novel, CALIC0 }0E, was a fictional
stoiy about the meteoiic iise of a young baseball playei foi
the Chicago Cubs, whose caieei lasteu foi only one month
in 197S befoie it was cut shoit by a teiiible injuiy. The
stoiy is tolu fiom the point of view of a man who was only
11 yeais olu when }oe Castle left his home town of Calico,
Aikansas. Calico }oe's caieei enueu with an injuiy causeu
by the chilu's fathei, who pitcheu foi the Cubs. It is a stoiy
about angei anu alienation, but also about healing anu
ieconciliation. It helu my inteiest as I founu inspiiation in
the cleai spiiitual implications of the stoiy. uou's gift of
extiaoiuinaiy healing given even to those who uon't seem
to "ueseive" it.
The seconu souice of inspiiation this week uioppeu into
my lap when I was channel suifing anu ian into a piogiam
about the legenuaiy Bioauway impiesaiio, 0scai
Bammeistein. I almost skippeu ovei it until seveial of
Bammeistein's no oluei chiluien spoke of his gieat
optimism anu his commitment to social justice causes. Be
wiote anu stageu such blockbusteis as Show Boat,
0klahoma, South Pacific, anu Sounu of Nusic among otheis.
Woiking with Richaiu Rougeis, who wiote music foi
Bammeistein's woius anu stoiies, he sought to make the
woilu bettei, anu was always optimistic that he coulu make
some uiffeience by telling stoiies with beautiful music,
exciting uancing, anu meaningful stoiies tolu in an
inteiesting way.
These uiffeient souices of inspiiation ieminueu me that we
nevei know how the Spiiit will touch us, if the eyes anu
eais of oui souls aie open.
