Flags of friendship
MURRAY CRAWFORD QMI Agency
Ties between Lloydminster and the Onion Lake First Nation to the north of the city may be strengthened after both communities formalize their resolve for co-operation. Part of this resolve will be achieved with a permanent Treaty 6 flag to fly alongside the ones already in front of City Hall. On behalf of the Cree Nation and its leader Chief Wallace Fox, Vern Chocan made a presentation to council about the importance of strengthening ties, and bettering the understanding of the shared history. Its just to create awareness with our community of the south, said Chocan. Weve had a lot of relationships and a lot of interaction with the City of Lloydminster over the past and now Onion Lake is going through some exciting times and our leader, Chief Wallace Fox, and Mayor Mulligan have had excellent relations. It is because of this relationship the two community leaders have forged that now the Cree Nation is trying to raise awareness of Treaty 6, which was signed in 1876. The city itself is within the treatys boundaries. Council approved the flag raising signifying the commitment to greater understanding and regional partnerships for July 20. The event will also include a parade from the fairgrounds to City Hall, speeches, youth dancers and a drum group. I think regionalization and doing better with our partners is important, said Mayor Jeff Mulligan. They are important to our economy and the potential growth of our economy out into the region. Mulligan said one of councils objectives going forward would be to be more inclusive, which does mean partnerships and co-operation with surrounding communities like Onion Lake First Nation. The land the City of Lloydminster occupies was involved in the original treaty. Treaty 6 gave each Aboriginal family of five 11.5 square kilometres of land which they could then sell back to the Canadian government for compensation. To create that awareness will do wonders for future generations by being able to coexist with each other, said Chocan. Especially with the two communities of Onion Lake and Lloydminster. The scheduled flag raising will be the third in Canada for Treaty 6 and the first in Alberta.
