RE: Design Requirements for the Infinitely Variable Transmission
The purpose of our design project is to design an Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT) for the
Dalhousie University 2007 Mini-Baja. The expectation of our client, Terry Lester, is to
demonstrate that an IVT is superior to a conventional Continuously Variable Transmission by
outperforming the other competitors. The main deliverable of the project will be a robust IVT
optimized for the Dalhousie University Mini-Baja. This objective will be met by comparing the
IVT to the CVT used by previous Dalhousie University Mini-Baja teams on a dyno before
February 28, 2007 and on the Mini-Baja vehicle later in the second term. Terry Lester has
agreed to supply the team with the key components of the IVT which are: unidirectional
clutches and main mass bearings. Terry Lester is also supplying a Matlab simulation
program for the IVT design.

Constraints
Safety
The IVT shall be designed to minimize any exposure to moving components.
The design will be such that failure of any component will not result in injury.
Size
The IVT must fit in the current Mini-Baja.
The IVT must be sized to match the supplied components.
Cost
The cost must not exceed $1000 including: materials, fabrication, and assembly.
Schedule and Deadlines
Design of the transmission should be completed by November 15
th
, 2006.
Construction should be completed by January 31
st
, 2007.
IVT dyno testing will be completed by February 28, 2007

Criteria
Performance
The IVT must outperform the C.V.T. in terms of torque output at the peak engine
horsepower.
Overall mechanical efficiency of at least 95%.
Top speed of the mini-baja should be at least 45 km/h which is approximately 10% higher
than the current mini-baja.

2
Weight
Should not exceed the weight of the 2005-2006 IVT design (32 lbs).
Quality and Usage
The IVT should be designed and constructed in such a way that it can withstand 500 hours
of service, to allow for adequate time for testing and the SAE Mini-Baja competition.
The quality of design and construction of the IVT will keep vibrations to a minimum.
The design should allow for easy assembly and disassembly.

Intellectual Property
Terry Lester, the owner of the IVT patent has given this team rights to use his design,
specifically for the Dalhousie Mini-Baja. The prototype will belong to Dalhousie University.
The project presentation and report will be in the public domain.

Client Resources
Terry Lester, of Lestran Engineering will supply our design team with two sets of
unidirectional clutches and main mass bearings. Terry Lester is also supplying a Matlab
simulation program for IVT design.
