Fathers Day Fire at Lake Shore Apartments

by Melissa Wittmer

that was not affected by the fire. The Springfield News-Leader reported that the fire began shortly after 6 p.m. on the third floor balcony of Building 21. Fire marshals are unable to identify the cause of the fire at this time, but they said the fire was not intentionally set. Amazingly, no injuries occurred and the fire was contained to one unit. At least 6 apartments were completely destroyed. The News-Leader noted that Lake Shore apartments do not have sprinkler systems installed. I am amazed to hear the heroic stories of passers-by rescuing pets from burning apartments and neighbors quickly notifying others about the evacuation. It shows that we live in an area where neighbors care about each other. An interesting observation was made about how quickly the Red Cross responded to the tragedy. In this event, the Red Cross was first notified by social media; waiting for notification from police

Fathers Day 2012 was a lovely daybright sunshine, warmer than usual temperatures and fun times with family. My drive home from a family gathering quickly turned unusual when I viewed black smoke and orange flames in the sky over Chesterfield Village. I had to take a different route home, but once I got there, I could see that Lake Shore apartments was on fire and the neighborhood streets were full of strange cars. The apartments are located at the end of my street, so I walked down to witness the amazing work of law enforcement and fire fighters as they worked together to get people to safety and to quickly put out the blaze. As we watched, my daughter reminded me that her voice teacher lives in Lake Shore apartments, so we interrupted her teachers trip to Arkansas to inform her of the fire. Fortunately for her, she lived in a different unit

can sometimes be quite delayed. The volunteers chose to respond after viewing a photo sent through twitter by a reporter from The Springfield News-Leader. Their quick response ensured that residents displaced by the fire received assistance as soon as possible. Fire fighters were on the scene until after 10:00 p.m. to look for hot spots and possible causes of the fire.

The warm weather is drawing large crowds to the pool each day. Please remember to be considerate and responsible about picking up trash and pool toys after having fun. Always bring your pool pass with you. If somebody asks to use your pass so that they can get into the restrooms, please ask if they are a resident and tell them they must have their own pass. The side clubhouse door next to the silo is accessed by the electronic pool pass. This door takes a second to electronically latch shut, so please ensure that the door is secured when you exit the clubhouse. This helps keep cooling costs for the clubhouse down and decreases the opportunity for vandalism to occur.

Thank you!
Several residents helped save Chesterfield Village HOA a ton of money by volunteering their time one afternoon to pull weeds and plant new flowers and plants at the pool. CVHOA was billed over $1,000 last year by a company who performed the task. This year, the total amount spent on flowers, plants and soil was about $150.00.

Way to go Volunteers!
The following people showed up (on short notice) to help out with the planting job at the pool. Thank you!!!

dont want to be the neighborhood that becomes an easy target to criminals. By obtaining the signs we show we are a vigilant neighborhood serious about protecting our homes and possessions. To date we have 6 homeowners who have received certificates. We need 19 more homes willing to attend one of these sessions and receive their certificate. There are many reasons to say we dont have time to attend this program, unfortunately the people who are willing to commit crimes against our homes and community are very committed. As Barney Fife from the old Andy Griffith shows would say lets nip it in the bud!

AND P ROPERT Y C RIMES ON THE R ISE IN AND AROUND C HESTERFIELD V ILLAGE

I was enjoying a vacation at the beach over Memorial Day Weekend when I decided to check email. My inbox was full of the typical stuffjunk mail, questions from students, bill statements; one email caught my eye. A neighbor sent a message to inform me and the rest of the board members of a home burglary that occurred over Memorial Day Weekend when their family was out of town. The thief broke in through a bedroom window and left the house in disarray. You may be thinking that this is an isolated story and that our neighborhood isnt being targeted by thieves. You would be wrong! The boundary map on the following page is taken from www.myneighborhoodupdate.net. It shows property crimes and domestic disturbance incidents that took place from 6/21/2011 to 6/20/2012. The online map service wouldnt provide data prior to that date. Look closely at the streets in Chesterfield Village and you will see that there were 3 burglaries that took place right in our borders. In addition to two home burglaries, one event involved the theft of a vehicle from a secured garage. The frequency of these events has increased sharply, as illustrated in the 12-Month Trend Graph on the following page. Its interesting to see how the amount of crimes increases dramatically once you cross the boundary road of Kansas Expressway. Take measures to ensure that your home is protected. Turn on all exterior lights at night and consider timers for indoor lights. When you go out of town, have a neighbor or friend check on your home daily and stop mail and newspaper deliveries. When you receive your new directory, pay attention to who your block captain is and make sure to report any suspicious behavior or crimes to the police and to your block captain. Social media is an excellent tool to keep people informed and aware of important information. If you like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/chesterfieldhoa, you will be connected to other neighbors and will be the first to know when something has happened in the neighborhood. Police warn residents to be cautious when dealing with solicitors at the door. Never allow a stranger into your home and always ask to see identification and product information. Youd be surprised by how many salesmen have nothing to show when asked. This is definitely suspicious. Simply tell these solici-

tors that they are not allowed to do that in our neighborhood and request that they leave immediately. Then, report the incident to your block captain and the police. Remove fliers and advertisements from your door immediately. If you dont remove them, police say that thieves take this as a sign that you are not home. Your house is then a potential target for a burglary. Thieves dont always act at night. In fact, one burglary in the neighborhood occurred during the afternoon. Thieves may watch your routine to know when you are gone. Lets work together to stop neighborhood crimes in Chesterfield Village!
