The Olympics are coming to our capital, London. Its the first time since 1948 that the worlds biggest sporting and cultural event has been to Britain. The event starts with a massive opening ceremony celebrating our green and pleasant land on Friday July the 27th. After which athletes from 216 countries will compete for medals in 300 events!!!!! The closing ceremony is on Sunday August 12th when we hand over the Olympic Torch to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Then there is the Paralympic Games from August 29th to September 9th for Athletes from around the world with disabilities. Its not just the games though. My Olympic Dreams.. We speak to staff to ask their thoughts on London 2012. This week, Miss HowarthCrazy Wiganer Howarth
Are you looking forward to the Olympics? Yes, I've always watched the Olympics What events will catch your eye? I really enjoy all of the track and field events. I will definitely be watching Usain Bolt in the 100m and 200m

Whats on? Monday Staff Meetings Athletics 7pm at TAC Tuesday Football Club All years Girls and Boys Wednesday Girls Basketball Club Thursday Rugby League Club All years Girls and Boys Sky Sports Project Athletics 7pm at TAC Friday Friday Footy!

What is your favourite Olympic memory? I have many. I always like to see athletes attempt to break their own world records. I remember Sergey Bubka always attempting to break his pole vaulting world record and i believe he did this 35 times! I used to think the pole was going to snap. I also used to enjoy watching Michael Johnson run the 200m and 400m. He was in a class of his own, and his 400m record still stands today.

Olympic say what??? Our monthly look at sport stars and the languages they speak
Pierre de Coubetin was a French educationalist and historian, founder of the International Olympic Committee, and is considered the father of the modern Olympic Games. Born into a French aristocratic family, he became an academic and studied a broad range of topics, most notably education and history. Without him we might not have the Olympics we have today. Merci Monsieur Coubetin!

Olympic Fact; The flame itself represents a number of things, including purity and the endeavor for perfection.

Torch arrives in Stretford!

History was made along the very street in which our new sports facilities are being built on Sunday June 24th. The Olympic Torch made its journey along Talbot Road, a journey which started on Mt Olympus in Greece and ends at the Olympic Stadium in London, Staff and students from SHS were among the thousands who lined the streets to mark the occasion. A huge banner wish the torch bearers well and welcoming them to Stretford was unveiled

The Olympic Torch was not the only relay weve had in school. The Trafford Schools Relay also made its way to SHS on June 19th. The schools relay sees thousands of schools making and passing on torches to local schools. We received ours from St Hildas and passed it on the Gorse Hill. See the picture special As part of the schools work for National School Sports Week, all departments worked together to teach Olympics related topics, bringing Sport to every space in the building All departments have made a huge contribution to the effort, by changing schemes of work to mark the arrival of the Olympics to London. Messages of good luck are being written to Team GB from all SHS students in our final day celebrations. On the last day, students will enjoy an Olympics interactive quiz. After that they will write letters, and design posters wishing Team GB all the best. They will then be sent to the Olympic Village GO TEAM GREAT BRITAIN!
