Council
approves
municipal
budget
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
Revenues are up and costs
are down for the 2012 budget.
Its economics 101, and Eve-
sham Township finds itself in
a good budgetary position
moving forward, officials said.
Members of the township
council recently approved the
final version of the $32.9 mil-
lion budget, which will also
contain a flat municipal tax
rate.
The budget contains a flat
municipal tax rate of a little
more than 39 cents per every
$100 of assessed property
value. For the average as-
sessed home in the township of
$271,800, this would be a de-
crease of about $3 from the
2011 municipal tax bill, Town-
ship Manager Bill Cromie
said.
Council didnt need much
time to discuss the budget,
Mayor Randy Brown acknowl-
edged, since it once again fea-
tured a flat municipal tax rate
and would provide economic
stability moving into the next
year.
When Brown came to the
council, he said the budget de-
pended on $3 million in de-
ferred taxes to keep the rate
low. Now the budget has zero
dollars in school tax deferrals.

Lost dog treks to nearby town
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
Its not exactly The Incredible
Journey, but if Mitzy the beagle
pointer mix could talk, she would
have some amazing tales to tell.
The two-and-a-half year old
rescue dog disappeared in Eve-
sham Township on Saturday, May
19, after running away from her
owner and into the woods behind
Georgia OKeefe Way.
After more than two weeks on
the lam, the frightened dog was
found on Wednesday, June 6, on
William Feather Drive in
Voorhees Township.
Mitzy was hanging out at a
friends house, one that she had
only been to on a handful of occa-
sions.
No, seriously.
Her owner, Dina Greenblatt,
said she believes that Mitzy
caught the scent of her dog friend
Molly a golden labradoodle
while she was running through
the woods behind Sturbridge
Lakes in Voorhees Township.
Mitzy and Molly are both fans of
the dog park in John Connolly
Park in Voorhees Township and
play there frequently while their
owners chat.
The only other people outside
of the four members of our fami-
ly that she trusts are her dog
friend Molly and her mommy
Maryanne, Greenblatt said. It
was unbelievable. She had only
been to Mollys house twice be-
fore during our two-year friend-
ship.
The rescue dog is extremely
nervous and skittish, Greenblatt
explained, and was most likely
abused before the Voorhees
Township family adopted her.
The family had been visiting rela-
tives in Evesham Township when
Mitzy disappeared on May 19.
After spending hours in the
woods looking for Mitzy and
having to be rescued herself by
the Evesham Township Police
after she got lost Greenblatt re-
turned home and immediately
went online to see what could be
done.
Greenblatt started a Facebook
page and posted a listing on
Craigslist urging all residents in
the area to call if they saw the dog
running through their neighbor-
hood. They posted her informa-
tion on a pet tracking website
called FindToto.com as well,
which sent out a phone message
blast about Mitzy to registered

With summer now in full swing
and children out of school, some
summertime activities warrant
some mentioning when it comes
to safety. One of those is riding bi-
cycles. According to the Centers
for Disease Control and Preven-
tion, 1,000 people die each year
from bicycle related accidents.
The CDC also says increasing
helmet use to 100 percent of all
riders would reduce the number
of deaths by half.
The Evesham Fire-Rescue De-
partment responds to a number of
bicycle-related accidents each
year, varying in severity. The de-
partment sees first-hand the ad-
vantages and benefits protective
equipment such as bike helmets
have for riders involved in an ac-
cident.
Each summer, EFD teaches bi-
cycle safety to the communitys
youth, which includes a strong
emphasis on the consistent use of
a bike helmet. Parents must do
their part.
First, parents should wear hel-
mets when biking and ensure
children have a properly fitting
helmet and enforce its use. The al-
ternatives are not pleasant and
are very preventable.
Did you know your child is re-
quired by New Jersey statute to
wear a helmet?
State law requires children 17
or younger to wear a properly fit-
ted helmet while riding a bicycle,
using in-line skates or a skate-
board. Parents can be held liable
in the event a child does not wear
one.

Depending on school tax defer-
rals is what gets municipalities in
trouble in the long run, he said.
Brown reminded taxpayers
that the last time the township
raised taxes was two years ago
when the township suffered
through 160 inches of snow dur-
ing a winter.
In other township news:
The council revised a request
for proposals for the Indian
Spring Country Club. Council
had previously approved an RFP
for a management contract for
the club, but Brown reported that
it will be changed to a simple
lease agreement.
A lease agreement would bring
in greater revenue for the town-
ship and would last between
seven to 15 years depending on
the agreement. Because the con-
tract wouldnt have to be renewed
every three years like the previ-
ous country club arrangement,
Brown said the leasing company
would be able to invest more capi-
tal into the club and golf course.
It would also increase revenue
coming into the township.
Were going from a manage-
ment contract to a lease. Hopeful-
ly well have a new RFP going out
very soon, Brown said. We be-
lieve a leasing opportunity will
bring us more revenue.
An RFP will also be published
for a tenant for the country clubs
banquet facility. Currently,
Marcos Banquet Facility is in
place at the club.
Also, in the councils work ses-
sion a discussion was held on the
cleanliness of the townships
commercial properties. Some of
these properties havent been
touched in more than 30 years,
Brown said.
The township will also be look-
ing into possibly changing an or-
dinance about the amount of
time that temporary signs can be
left out in the township.
Those two items will be dis-
cussed at the next council meet-
ing, which will be held on Tues-
day, July 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the
township municipal building.

Independence Day Celebration
planned throughout town
In honor of the local service
men and women dedicated to pro-
tecting the freedoms established
by the founding fathers, the Eve-
sham Celebrations Foundation is
planning to hold its Fifth Annual
Independence Day Celebration at
locations throughout the town.
The day begins with events along
Marltons historic Main Street
with the Marlton Mayors Cup 5K
race, sponsored by Virtua, and a
one-mile fun run/walk kicking
off at 8:30 a.m. Last year more
than 600 runners participated in
the Mayors Cup events.
Following the 5K Run at 10:30
a.m. is the Childrens Bike Pa-
rade, which features youngsters
showcasing their decorated bicy-
cles, This is followed by the Main
Parade with marching bands,
floats, and retuning armed forces
members on Main Street at 11
a.m. More than 13,000 spectators
watched the parade in 2011.
At 6 p.m., the July 4th celebra-
tions continue at Cherokee High
School with a full assortment of
evening events including chil-
drens rides and a gourmet food
court. Other celebratory events
include a Support the Troops
Rally, skydivers and a car show.
Music and a spectacular array of
fireworks, sponsored by Burns
Automotive, cap off the evening
activities.
Through events like the
Fourth of July Celebration, we
have a real opportunity to show-
case how partnerships between
our business community, munici-
pal government, the school dis-
trict and resident volunteers can
enhance residents experiences
and make the community a spe-
cial place to live, said Alicia
Marrone, Spokesperson for the
Evesham Celebrations Founda-
tion.
Costs associated with the
days activities are underwritten
primarily through public-private
partnerships. This means that
Evesham Township, unlike many
other local communities, is able
to continue the local tradition of
4th of July activities in spite of
the economic realities.
Registration for the Mayors
Cup 5k and more information
about the full days events can be
found at www.eveshamcelebra-
tions.org.
The award-winning Evesham
Celebrations Foundation is a non-
profit organization dedicated to
promoting and celebrating com-
munity experiences throughout
the township. ECF utilizes re-
sources from both the public (mu-
nicipal government and the
school districts) and private sec-
tors and secures donations and
sponsorships to conduct and un-
derwrite events open to all citi-
zens in the community, including

in our opinion
T
he good news: New Jersey ac-
counted for 25 percent of all
new jobs created in the United
States in the month of May: 17,500 new
jobs were created.
The bad news: the states unemploy-
ment rate rose from 9.1 to 9.2 percent.
And lets be mindful: the 9.2 percent
figure really isnt an accurate unem-
ployment percentage at all.
There are countless people whose
unemployment benefits have run out,
and whose cases no longer count in de-
partment of labor statistics.
And there are others who may have
lost a job, who were ineligible for un-
employment benefits, and, again,
whose cases are not factored into the
state unemployment rate.
And so as encouraging as it is to
hear our state created the most new
jobs in the country, the overall known
unemployment numbers are still ex-
tremely alarming.
Gov. Christie says the new jobs re-
port means consumers are becoming
more confident.
The overall figures paint a complete-
ly different picture.
Were many years into this econom-
ic mess. And were still struggling as a
state, despite the so-called comeback.
While the governors 10 percent
across-the-board income-tax cut would
certainly help some, it certainly wont
help the middle class all that much.
A person making an annual salary
of $35,000 would see a whopping $1 a
week increase in take-home pay.
This is hardly enough to spark con-
sumer confidence.
Much more still needs to be done at
the federal and state levels to inspire
confidence. Realistically, the unem-
ployment percentage needs to drop to
close to 8 percent before theres any
reason for anyone to celebrate.
And even then, the numbers will
still be too high.
We look forward to the day we can
agree consumer confidence is back.
Were just not sure that time is here
yet.
States uptick in unemployment
Number rises despite creation of 17,500 new jobs; more must be done
How confident are you?
Gov. Christie says he believes con-
sumers in New Jersey are gaining
confidence. Yet the unemployment
rate jumped in May. How confident in
the economy are you? We want to
know.
The New Jersey Fire and Emergency
Medical Services Institute announced last
week that Chief Thaddeus Ted Lowden
of Evesham Fire-Rescue and the Honor-
able John Wisniewski, Assemblyman rep-
resenting the 19th legislative district (Mid-
dlesex County) are the recipients of the or-
ganizations top awards for 2012.
Wisniewski, who serves as chairman of
the State Fire Safety Commission and has
championed many fire and EMS related
laws and policies, has been named Legis-
lator of the Year.
Lowden is to receive the C. Kenneth An-
derson Lifetime Achievement Award in
recognition of his national and state lead-
ership role as well as for 37 years of fire-
fighting service to his Burlington County
community. The award carries the name of
the late Ken Anderson, a founder of the In-
stitute and also a lifelong volunteer fire-
fighter and activist from Burlington Coun-
ty. Anderson passed away in 2011 at the age
of 78 after a brief illness.
Our organization couldnt be more
proud than to have two such distinguished
and longtime friends and advocates as our
honorees, affirmed Carl Christensen, N.J.
Fire and EMS Institute chairman.
The award was presented at the N.J. Fire
and EMS Institutes annual dinner on June
20 at the Pines Manor in Edison. Over two
hundred leaders in the states fire and
emergency medical services attended the
dinner to interact with state, local and fed-
eral officials.

Fire Prevention Association, was the
keynote speaker.
The New Jersey Fire and Emergency
Medical Services Institute is an umbrella
organization for many of the states fire
and emergency medical services organiza-
tions.
Its mission is to inform and assist legis-
lators and other government officials re-
garding issues, and to serve as a liaison
with the fire and emergency medical serv-
ices.
In Lowden's acceptance speech, he
stressed that fire and emergency medical
services organizations need to communi-
cate with our elected officials so that they
understand that we do not just fight fires.
We are all-hazards agencies that respond to
a myriad of requests for service he went
on the say that when the problem can't be
arrested or given a ticket, the fire
service is usually called to address the
problem.
Evesham Fire-Rescue congratulates
Lowden on this accomplishment.

Locals graduate from Widener Law
Widener Law recently held
commencement exercises for its
38th graduating class on its cam-
pus in Wilmington, Del. The cere-
mony, held Saturday, May 19, fea-
tured an address by U.S. Sen.
Christopher Coons of Delaware.
Coons told the 310 Delaware-
campus graduates there is no
limit to what they can do with the
skills they've gained at Widener.
Each day he recites the Pledge of
Allegiance in the U.S. Senate,
Coons said, he listens intently as
the final line is uttered.
Never forget that we pledge, as
a nation, liberty and justice for
all, he said. You have an oppor-
tunity. You have the skills to add
to justice around the world.
The graduates included:
Domenico Caglioti, of Marl-
ton who received a Juris Doctor
degree.
Douglas Ferguson, of Marlton
who received a Juris Doctor de-
gree.
Widener University President
James T. Harris III told graduates
their communities, their nation
and democracy in general need
them to speak out, particularly on
behalf of those who cannot speak
for themselves.
Graduates of the class of 2012,
speak out and make the world a
better place, Harris said. Speak
out and you'll raise the stature of
this institution with your words
and your actions.
Widener University is a metro-
politan university that connects
curricula to social issues through
civic engagement. The School of
Law is fully accredited by the
American Bar Association and
holds membership in the Associa-
tion of American Law Schools.
Widener provides an all-around
comprehensive legal education
program with special certificates
available from its Health Law In-
stitute, the Law & Government In-
stitute, the Taishoff Advocacy,
Technology and Public Service
Institute, and the Institute of
Delaware Corporate and Busi-
ness Law. Widener Law has two
locations: the Wilmington, Del.
campus, which opened in 1971,
and the Harrisburg, Pa. campus,
which opened in 1989. Visit

After only a few hours, calls
started to pour into their home.
Sightings of Mitzy were happen-
ing all over Evesham Township.
We were so distraught when it
happened. By the time I would get
anywhere after people spotted her
she would be gone. We were out
every single day looking for her;
we were getting sightings around
Kettle Run mostly, people I didnt
know were calling us and texting
us with sightings, it was crazy,
Greenblatt said.
An hour after she ran away, the
Greenblatts got their first call.
The escaped dog was spotted on
Kettle Run and Hopewell at 5:30
p.m. on May 19. The next day she
was spotted standing on the front
lawn of a residence in the same
neighborhood, but ran away be-
fore she could be caught.
Later on that night, a resident
called and said she saw Mitzy on
Kettle Run Road and Clearfield
Avenue, but the dog ran away dur-
ing the phone call.
For the rest of the week, Green-
blatt said the dog completely dis-
appeared. False sightings were
being called in, she said, and she
wasnt positively identified again
until Wednesday, June 6, some 17
days after her last appearance.
An employee from a dog chip-
ping service called Greenblatt
and excitedly told her that he had
spotted Mitzy in the Sturbridge
Lakes area in the township. He
tried to corral her, but the dog ran
away, and he and Greenblatt spent
the rest of the day riding around
in his truck looking for Mitzy.
While looking for her they got an-
other positive sighting of Mitzy at
Egret Road in the township later
on in the day, but she was gone
when they drove over.
With so many close calls and
no results, Greenblatt said she
was ready to give up hope.
But she received one last phone
call on the same day from her
friend Maryanne, informing her
that Mitzy was in her backyard
barking her head off with Molly.
Maryanne said she had heard
Molly barking like crazy a little
after 9 p.m. on June 6, and she
was surprised when she heard
another dog join in. She was even
more elated when she recognized
Mitzy, Mollys best dog friend
from John Connolly Park.
Her home is about three-and-a-
half miles away from the location
where Mitzy had been last spot-
ted. She had wandered through
the woods in the Sturbridge
Lakes area of Voorhees Township
to get to the home.
All told, Mitzy traveled almost
six miles from Marlton to Voorhees
during her 17-day adventure.
And for her troubles?
Mitzy is now the proud owner
of doggie GPS which allows the
Greenblatt family to monitor her
location 24 hours a day.
Ultimately, the power of
puppy friendship was stronger
than all the human searching
that we could muster. Mitzy
showed up at her BFF's (Best
Furry Friend's) house in Stur-
bridge Lakes 17 days after run-
ning away, Greenblatt said. Peo-
ple went out of their way to help
us. Were so grateful.

The Angels won the Marlton Recreation Councils 11-12 major league baseball championship on June
14 at historic Kessler Field by defeating the Phillies, 6-4. Great pitching and defense and timely hit-
ting were the keys to the Angels success. Each player on the team greatly contributed to the teams
title run. Hard work, hustle and fun certainly were the highlights of the Angels' season. Pictured are:
back row, head coach Ted Flocco, Mike Maresca, assistant coach Claude Cinelli, assistant coach Mike
Guerra, assistant coach Dan Giangiulio; middle row, Nick Passaro, Brandon Guerra, Ryan Flocco,
Shota Asahi, Keval Patel; and front row, Ryan Bassett, Garrett Giangiulio, Keith Fisher, Tatum Cinelli,
Bradley Bolger.
