Abby Eaves, Miss Penn Yan 2012, was photographed at Miles Wine Cellars, located on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail on Randall Crossing Road between Dresden and Himrod. The historic Greek Revival mansion that houses Miles Wine Cellars tasting room now also features a small Inn and Caf, and the Miles family has added a line of local brews to their products. Once a steamboat landing, the property is now one of the few Seneca Lake wineries that can be accessed by boat. "Most serenely gorgeous setting of any winery in the region." is what National Geographic Traveler writer wrote about the winery. On of the winerys most noted wines is Ghost, created in honor of the friendly spirits that are said to inhabit the property. Owners Doug Miles and Suzy Hayes and their family, Evan, Spencer, Maren and Jane are all gracious hosts. She was photographed by Mark Griffin , owner of Photography At Your Service. July 4 and 5 will be the 13th year that a group of Keuka painting friends have offered their Art Barn Show and Sale. And with the addition of two new artists, Ginny Deneka and Char Di-
Gennaro, it brings to thirteen the number of different artists who have been part of this talented group. Held at their barn on Blue Spruce Lane, two and a half miles south of Penn Yan off Route 54, this show offers paintings, prints, and note cards created by Hannelore Wolcott Bailey, Fran Bliek, Bonnie Barney, Tonja Kennedy, Char DiGennaro and Ginny Deneka. This group of friends
often paints at the Yates County Arts Center classes, at Sunny Point, the Arts Centers lake location, and at their own studios. Some may be found painting along the side of a road overlooking the Bluff, even recently sketching in their cars during a downpour that didnt dampen a plein air painting day. They all love to capture the beauty of life in the Finger Lakes, and interpret it in oils, water-
colors, acrylics, or pastels. And they happily remark, If youre not having fun, you arent doing it right. The Art Barn will be open Wednesday and Thursday, July 4 and 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is ample parking. Wine and refreshments will tempt folks to linger and visit. And some of the proceeds of sales will support the Yates County Arts Centers new gallery on Main Street in Penn Yan.

Summertime 2012 The Chronicle-Express The Curtiss Museum is naturally focused on the life of Glenn Curtiss. But, along with the interesting exhibits showing Curtiss's contributions to aviation, you can learn about what life was like in the 1870s to the 1930s. Children will have fun with interactive exhibits. While you are there, ask about the Glenn Curtiss Heritage Trail which takes you from the site of his bicycle shop on to the sites of the Curtiss Factory, the Flying School, the Curtiss Seaplane Base, the June Bug flight, and finally to Curtiss's grave site. Stop in Hammondsport it tied for Budget Travel's coolest small town in America this year to visit the town's many wonderful shops and restaurants.
Did you know that Curtiss received the United States' first pilot's license? Have you heard about his speed records or how he flew the world's first flying boat?
you can learn all about the early history of the wine industry, visit Walter Taylor's art gallery, and there's a bonus the view is spectacular. Continue your drive north along the west leg of Keuka Lake to Branchport. This little

tours. The Unquiet World is a book about Jemima Wilkinson and the first frontier settlement by Yates County Historian Frances Dumas. Jemima was a controversial figure, and there were many stories told about her. Not everyone liked her. When Dumas wrote
this book, she had access to records and documents not available to previous authors. It's a fascinating story about a special woman and the early settlement of this region. The Unquiet World is said to be the definitive book on Jemima. There is also an interesting companion audio CD self-driving tour of the sites where the Universal Friends settled in 1788.
Penn Yan & How It Got That Way is another new book by Dumas telling the story of Penn Yan from its geological beginnings up through today. It tells the complete story of the village, and is filled with pictures illustrating what life was like. In addition, it includes the story of what was happening in the United States. Summertime 2012 The Chronicle-Express concepts from Alyssa Broome and Emma Willing, first and second runners-up, and looked for a need to fill. In no time she was meeting with Penn Yan Village, Yates County Women and the Yates County Chamber of Commerce to organize a work day to refurbish one of the villages mostused playgrounds. On a very warm day in May, she led a group of volunteers who scrubbed, painted and repaired the equipment at the Lake Street playground located near the Keuka Outlet. Now, shes hoping to take things a step farther to completely replace the aging playground equipment. For the full extent of my dream playground to take shape, it will require a great amount of financial support, but I have faith in our community to help the cause, she says. The playground isnt the only thing that gets Abbys attention. Shes worked hard in school and was recently inducted into the Penn Yan Chapter of the National Honor Society. She is the International Club president and a member of HUBBA, band, marching band, jazz ensemble, Ski Club. She is the director of the Empire State Quarter Horse Youth Association and NYS representative in Columbus Ohio from 2008-2011. She is also a delegate of the National Youth Leadership Conference on Medicine and is active in her church. Abigail enjoys hunting, horseback riding, hiking, biking, walking, running, reading, singing and playing music, praying, studying and learning, and spending time with family and friends. Shes planning to apply to her parents alma mater, the University of Rochester to achieve a pre-med or pre-dental degree. She recently learned she received the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass scholarship from the U of R. My ultimate life plan is to return to Penn Yan and join my parents dental practice; Eaves Family Dental Group. I see it as the perfect application of my intellectual skills, as well as ability to communicate with patients, all while doing what I love helping others. A patients smile after changing their life, no matter how trivial or major the procedure is, is the greatest reward of all, she says. You cant help but smile if youve ever had the chance to talk to Abby Eaves, Miss Penn Yan 2012, who graces the cover of this years Summertime.

Chamber Music Series 10th season began with student concerts and workshops in the Dundee Central School and Penn Yan Academy and Elementary Schools on May 24. On June 9, a special concert, The Best of the Best, featuring gifted student musicians who participated in a workshop series led by Clark, was held at Hunt Country Vineyards. A new effort this year will be a joint project with the Yates County Arts Center. In late July, Clark will work with select students at a four-day workshop at Sunny Point. The participants will compose and perform a piece. Founded in 2003, the purpose of the Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival (FLCMF) is to enhance the quality and enjoyment of life in the Finger Lakes Area by promoting an appreciation of diverse music and musical styles. Highlights this season include music of Mozart, Dvok, Brahms, Beethoven, Arensky, and Stravinsky, as well as music by American composers including folk, jazz, minimalist music, ballads and pop. Education outreach has always been a very important part of the FLCMF mission. To that end, the FLCMF sponsors free education outreach programs for youth in local public schools and camps in the Finger Lakes area. Admission to concerts for adults is $20 per ticket. Students are admitted free to all concerts. Venues are wheelchair accessible.

Twenty-five years ago, the very first building of The Windmill rose in what was just a brush lot the week before. Conceived as
a partnership between the commercial and agricultural economies of the region, it was built by a similar partnership between the growing Mennonite and the established English communities. The idea was born in 1978 when Bill and Ruth Gunderman visited the Green Dragon market in Ephrata, Pa. along with their daughter, Pat and her husband Ron Nissen. They dreamed of bringing a market like that to Yates County. With grass roots support, by 1986 the farmers market that began as The Yates County Country Cooperative grew in popularity to the degree that it seemed their dream might be possible.
With the encouragement of Susie Stolzfus, a well-known quilter and pillar of the Mennonite community, a meeting was called to gauge the interest and assess the feasibility of the idea. More than 80 people came for that first meeting in February 1986, and their energy and commitment were ready to move forward. A steering committee was formed, the 26-acre lot in Barrington between Penn Yan and Dundee was chosen. But, for all their enthusiasm and even with the successful model before, no bank could see the opportunity they saw. Still, with individual backers and contributors, they managed to clear the

On Saturday, June 27, 1987, The Windmill opened with 64 vendors in two buildings and 25 vendors outdoors. The energy was electric and the news spread in all directions. The very next Saturday market happened to be July 4th, and traffic was backed up for five miles to the north and south on Route 14A with people eager to visit the new market. The Windmills future was assured that quickly, and what no banker could see being a success had quickly become the fastest growing commercial interest in the county. The very next year, a third building and a produce shed were added, and with help from a New York State grant, sidewalks, concrete floors, and restrooms were added as improvements. By 1995 another 7 1/2 acres had to be purchased to expand parking. In 2004, the produce shed and hay auction barn were converted to still more permanent vendor space. Bill Gunderman passed away in 2001, but Pat and Ron Nissen, along with many others, carried on for many years afterward with his dedication to the market. Before he passed, Bill said, Hundreds have given their talents unselfishly, and the credit for the success belongs to all of them. The Windmill crew did not invent marketing, nor did they reinvent it; instead, they took most of the good features of other markets and molded them into The Windmill concept. Today, The Windmill is approaching 200 vendors and attracts an average of 8,000-10,000 customers and visitors to Yates County every Saturday. The current manager, Lauren Welch, in his sixth season at the wheel, describes the business philosophy for the market as Making what weve got the best we can. To celebrate the 25 years of that success, Welch is giving away two $25 gift certificates every market day that can be used at any of the almost 200 Windmill vendors. Feel the joy when you take the plunge for Keuka Comfort Care Home.
Krossin' Keuka is a .67 mile fun swim across Keuka Lake, off the shore of Keuka College. Swimmers are escorted by paddlers and marine patrol and greeted with breakfast on the shore. The event supports the Keuka Comfort Care Home through fund-raising in the form of sponsorships. Most who have grown up around the lake have thought about attempt-
Summertime 2012 The Chronicle-Express ing to swim across Keuka Lake. Few ever actually do it. That dream has become reality for many, who not only have conquered the lake, but now have made it an annual ritual. That is the power and the legend of Krossin Keuka. The fun event is now in its fourth year and so far, nearly 50 swimmers and six paddlers have registered. All of the proceeds raised from Krossin' Keuka will go to the Keuka Comfort Care Home, a two-bedroom home where end of life care is provided. KCCHs mission is to provide a facility and staff to ensure compassionate care in a peaceful, home-like environment for the communitys terminally ill residents and their families at no cost to these patients, families or their insurance companies. KCCH is a valuable asset to the community. The swim is fun, noncompetitive and open to anyone who is of middle school age and older. It will be held Saturday, July 28, at 7 a.m. at Neamo Point on Keuka Lake, Keuka College, Keuka Park. Swimmers are required to pay a $25 registration fee, and required to raise at least $100 before the event. Swimmers are encouraged to raise as much money as possible, and they are eligible to win fundraising awards. Paddlers are required to pay the registration fee, and are encouraged to participate in sponsorship donations, but are not required to raise money. Participants will receive a Krossin Keuka tee shirt and a free breakfast. Prizes will be awarded based on fundraising. Register or sponsor a participant at krossinkeuka.org. Swimmers are taken across the lake to Willow Point on pontoon boats, and begin their swim together as a pod. Paddlers escort each pod across the lake, and are required to attend a safety briefing before the event begins. Paddlers are in place to keep swimmers on track, give encouragement, and are equipped to assist with fatigued swimmers. In addition to paddlers, the Yates County Sheriff s Department provides Marine Patrol who position themselves across the width of the lake. Lifeguards are present in motorboats as well. Swimmers are welcome to form their own pods: family members, co-workers, organization members, or friends. Healthy money-raising competition among swimmers and pods is encouraged, but Krossin Keuka is not a race. The goal is to raise as much money as possible. Registration for Krossin Keuka 2012 is now open. Go to krossinkeuka.org to register and for further information. Space is limited to the first 150 swimmers. The Keuka Comfort Care Home is a nonprofit home in Penn Yan, which provides a facility and staff to ensure compassionate care in a peaceful, home-like

Race fans making their first visit to the track will be impressed. The facility is first rate, said Harpell. I have always loved the covered grandstand at Black Rock. It creates a fairgrounds type atmosphere, he added. There are VIP Rooms on both the homestretch and the backstretch, which is where the pit area is located. It also provides plenty of space for camping on the grounds. Most importantly, the track is fast, wide and very racey. Expect multiple racing grooves and plenty of action. Its a natural tie in to run a Race of Champions series event at a track that is owned by someone that knows full well the history of the Race of Champions. I was there for my fathers wins in those Race of Champions events and have very fond memories, said Dean Hoag. Its really a thrill to

The sculptures in the contemporary glass gallery at the new wing planned for the Corning Museum of Glass will be bathed in natural light from above, and given the breathing room they deserve. The new theater will be able to ac-

Summertime 2012 The Chronicle-Express campus green. The designs for the 100,000-square-foot, $64 million expansion at the Corning Museum of Glass done by highprofile New York City architect Tom Phifer are ready, and the CMoG staff cant wait to see them brought to life. When the expansion is finished in 2014, it will immediately become a drawing card. The entire circulation flow of the museum will change, and tourists will be funneled right into the new wing from the admissions lobby to start their visit. Theyll stroll into a 26,000-square-foot contemporary glass gallery with gently curving walls, where the museums largest pieces its modern sculptures will be spread across concrete floors lit by skylights. It will be the first time natural light will be used to such an extent for contemporary glass. Sculptures the museum has never had the space to properly display will be brought out of storage. Whats interesting is how the lighting will change with the time of day, whether its cloudy or sunny, and with the seasons, said Karol Wight, CMoGs executive director. Nearby will be the new special exhibitions gallery, and wrapping around the outside of the main floor will be a long hallway and benches much like a porch with a huge glass wall overlooking the campus green. From there, its on to the 6,000-square-foot, 500-seat theater for hot glass shows. The stage area itself will be sunken, with retractable banked seating, and a surrounding balcony with seating on all sides. It will have glass walls, allowing folks in other parts of the museum as well as outside to catch a glimpse of the shows. Overhead will be the huge Robertson ventilator, kept in place largely as a nod to the history of the Steuben Glass factory where the new wing is being built. The theater will quadruple the seating capacity of any existing stage CMoG has. It will also allow CMoG to host elite glass artists it never has been able to artists who work on a really big scale, with large teams and special equipment requirements, said Rob Cassetti, creative director. The whole focus of the expansion, Cassetti says, will be on living, working artists in contrast to the galleries in darker, quieter areas of the museum where the relics are sometimes thousands of years old. Underneath the main floor of the new wing will be a floor with conference rooms, office space and such. There will also be a multi-pur-
Page 35 pose education room for school groups and a new loading bay for trucks outside. The facade of the expansion will be made of white aluminum with white perpendicular blades of ultra-thin specialty glass. Energy efficiency is a key part of the designs.

These are works of art in glass, and glass loves light. On the rooftop skylights: The entire space is skylight, and were using a translucent glass at the top. In other words, we dont let any direct sunshine in, its all diffuse light ... We have these enormous concrete beams (in the ceiling), and those big concrete beams will filter the light straight down to the glass. The way glass is lit most beautifully is from the top ... We took a lot of time trying to understand what it meant to light glass. On the display space in the contemporary gallery: Were essentially not hanging anything on the walls. All of the glass will be exhibited from the floor up, rather than from the walls out. So the walls will be very soft, sensuous, seemingly without corners. On how the project will change the museums circulation flow: Youll come into the lobby, and well have a big welcoming portal that will take you right into this new building for contemporary glass. And from there youll go right into the new hot glass show. We wanted it to be really clear and simple, because theyve got a lot of visitors every year. On blending the new wing with CMoGs existing architecture: I think the project begins to knit itself into the existing campus well. We wont just come and drop this building by helicopter. On the team working with his firm on the project: We have architects, we have structural engineers, we have mechanical engineers, we have theater consultants, we have lighting designers, weve got window wall engineers. There are so, so many engineers that go into making a building like this. Its a real collaborative effort with a lot of people, I think maybe 20 or so. On when he first took on the project: They wanted me to come up and see what they had, so I hopped on a plane and came up there and went through

the museum, and got incredibly enthused about the idea of showing the glass of our time ... They have an extraordinary collection of historic glass, and I was really enthused about making these large
spaces for contemporary glass that can be bathed in natural light. Some of the early ideas were formed on the first couple of visits there. On how his vision for CMoG took shape: Every building has its
own personality that begins to form. You really want to ask the building what it wants to be, rather than you telling the building what it should be.

VHF radio
If you dont have one you may be taking an unnecessary risk. A cell phone wont summon the closest potential rescuers your fellow boaters or anglers, and today a VHF radio can be purchased for as little as $100. If you have a handheld VHF, ensure the battery is charged. Digital Selective Calling VHF radios need to be registered, and an MMSI number issued to the boat in order to gain all of their superior safety benefits such as a one-button mayday feature. For a VHF radio tutorial, go to www.BoatUS.com/mmsi
Having an anchor and rope in good condition with the bitter end firmly secured to the boat will prevent drifting and give you time to think things through and make it easier for others to find you. To help you select an anchor, go to www.BoatUS.com/foundation/guide/navigation_30.html .

tory Club or JHC has enjoyed researching and working on local history projects. The club is comprised of history lovers who meet monthly at the Branchport Library. The goals of this informal organization are to share & enjoy history, preserve town history and bring it into the digital age -making files more accessible to the public. In addition, the group develops projects that will enhance and preserve the towns history while assisting the Town Historian whenever possible. Presently, group members are working on about 12 different and varied projects of interest to, and initiated by, its members. The club is working to expand the list of

Jerusalem veterans from all wars in the Lest We Forget Notebook located at the Branchport Library. One group member, Marshall Gurnee, has done extensive to restore the Herrick Cemetery on Skyline Drive. Through his efforts, he has uncovered John Beals
gravesite. Martha Johnstone has been researching and obtaining documentation which is required to place a Revolutionary War marker on the grave of John Beal, claimed by both Steuben County and Yates County as a resident who fought in the Revolutionary War. This issue of resi-
dency is partially explained when its understood that the Bluff, now in Yates County, was once part of Steuben County. One of the large and ongoing projects the group began undertaking in 2011 was helping to preserve the Beddoe Rose Cemetery, a pio-

Don Wright is chairing this committee of JHC members and others who have been concerned with the deteriorating condition of the cemetery. Don researched restoration practices and protocol, and obtained written permission from New York State for a group of club members/volunteers to help physically clean up vegetation at the state park site in November 2011. In addition to the general clean up, the group had concerns that some headstones were broken and scattered at the cemetery site. Some stones even appear to be missing completely. Two large monument stones were located, not in the cemetery proper but nearby, apparently rolled to their new location by vandals assisted by gravity. One stone, an approximately 16 in. x 16 in. x 12 in granite capital was to the south in a stream at the bottom of a steep ravine about an 80 degree slope from the cemetery. The other, a much larger rectangular prism was wedged against a boulder near a pathway to the north of the cemetery. The group built a stone sled to help get the two large head stones moved back up to the cemetery site from the gully and path below. Keuka Lake State Park crew members John Tharp and David Orcutt, under the supervision of Park Superintendent Jim Zimpfer, moved these large stones back to the cemetery. This was a very strenuous and difficult task, given the weight of the stones and the steepness of the slope. The capital stone had to be winched up the steep slope using a block and tackle and come-alongs attached by rope to the bases of trees. The park crew has also constructed and erected a sign to identify the cemetery and bring it to the attention of the public. Progress on the Beddoe-Rose Cemetery continued over the winter. Judy Erwin and Lyn Fitch worked to compile and edit historical information for a notebook on the burials of local pioneer families. Homes of some of these early settlers still stand within the Town of Jerusalem. A trail box was made by Keith Toaspern to be attached cemetery sign post. Inside the box is an informational flyer that tells the names of the 14 souls resting in the cemetery along with
Page 47 brief historical notations about these individuals. Also in the box is a notebook for visitors to sign and space for comments. In the first weekend (May 22, 2012), two pages were filled. The visitors came from as far away as Canada and Mississippi. Some writers expressed their appreciation for information as they had often hiked by this peaceful place had unanswered questions about the site. A copy of the Cemetery Notebook containing additional information is kept at the park office with another availCONTINUED ON PAGE 48

able for reading at the Branchport Library. A third copy of the notebook will be available for reading at the Town of Jerusalem Office this summer. In connection with the cemetery project, in June of 2011, Jane Davis, former Jerusalem historian, presented her book called The Beddoe Tract. The program titled An Afternoon with Jane was sponsored by the JHC. Janes book tells of the 7,000 acre tract purchased and named Esperanza (meaning hope in Spanish) by Captain John Beddoe, the first deeded owner of the land. The Beddoe-Rose cemetery has also been known as the Esperanza Cemetery. The JHC has purchased and placed copies of Janes book at the Keuka Lake State Park Office and the Branchport Library. Don Wright is now
working toward placement of the BeddoeRose cemetery on the National Registry of Historic Places. Hopefully, all the efforts undertaken by volunteers and park employees will help reduce the threat of vandalism to this site. Concerned visitors to the cemetery believe that although their grave stones may toppled, the souls buried there deserve respect and peace. Included at the burial site are not only Jerusalem pioneers, but one granddaughter and two great granddaughters of Phillip Livingston, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Of concern now is the stonewall surrounding the Rose family graves. The state park took down a dead tree and now the JHC volunteers are preparing to clear the rotted debris from that corner of the cemetery. There are a few stones missing and rumored to be close by on

Summertime 2012 The Chronicle-Express the Bluff. Any found stones can be left/returned to the bottom of the White Trail or park office with full amnesty given. Another exciting aspect of research being done includes Herrick family documents supplied by Michael Morehouse and being transcribed by Sharon Benjamin. This familys fabric of life in Jerusalem in tightly interwoven with Keuka College, the Trolley, Bluff Point Methodist Church and the Herrick Cemetery on Skyline Drive. The diaries have done more than provide insight into daily life on the Bluff, they have created many more mysteries to be explored. This summer, the JHC is sharing free programs on local history. On June 19 Stone Ruin Mystery featured Mr. David Schewe, known on the internet as stonepilewhisper. He will present information on local sites on Bluff Point, Indian Pines and Old Fort and how they link to other stone ruin sites outside the Town of Jerusalem. Related to this, a JHC member, Jim Creveling will share his research about a sword found by his great grandfather near the Old Fort. The July 25 program, Crossing Keuka, attendees will hear a story of houses crossing Keuka Lake. Of interest is a DVD presented by David Reeve of his family home floated across the lake in August of 1950. This story made national news at the time and there are many more local accounts to add to the details of the video. This is the first time this private movie has been shown to the public. This story began in March with a truck sinking through the ice and being pulled out by Tones Garage. Many local residents recall this all day rescue. On Aug. 11 the JHC will coordinate with the YCG&HS House Tour, adding displays and programs at the Branchport Library. Along the Plank Road a story being compiled by Annette Toaspern will be shown throughout the tour. A display of Private Trolley Stops on the West Lake Road has been placed at the Branchport Library. The rotting Penn Yan, Keuka Park & Branchport Trolley ticket and waiting booth located just south of the Municipal Water Plant on the West Lake Road was of concern to the club. Pat Orcutt, who grew
Page 49
up on the West Lake Road, made a miniature replica of the building to preserve its memory. The ticket booth/waiting booth was part of the trolley system that ran from 1897 -1927. Included in the history display are other West Lake
Road private waiting booths. Come see the display and identify the ones still existing today. JHC meets at the Branchport Library monthly and welcomes everyone to attend and to hear about and share area history.

Inside is best
If you cant get off the water in time, the best place to be on a boat is inside any cabin, but avoid being near mast or chainplates (sailboats), or large metal appliances like refrigerators.

Get off the water early: Getting to safe harbor is the safest bet. If youre in a powerboat and cant get in, you may be able to get around the storm.

The challenge with lightning strikes is that they sometimes leave hard to find traces of damage that may only be seen when the boat is out of the water. For more information, read Weve Been Hit! If youre on an open boat, stay low and in the center. Depending on the severity of your situation, its also a good idea to remove jewelry. The U.S. Coast Guard reports a case a few years ago in which lightning struck a man who was standing up wearing a large medallion.

That is the belief of the Pennsylvania-Yankee Theatre Company, and now Keuka College has joined them in that mission. In his inauguration speech, Keuka College President Dr. Jorge Daz-Herrera declared his commitment to bring the arts back to Keuka, and mentioned the Sampson Theatre by
name as part of that plan. The dun-colored building on East Elm St. often goes unnoticed these days, but that wasnt always the case. From its opening in 1910 until it closed during the Great Depression, the Sampson welcomed countless patrons to thousands of theatre performances, circuit vaudeville shows, and even a speech by President Theodore Roosevelt. Board member and Yates County contractor Dean Knapton has poured his heart and soul into this effort. No single person is more responsible for the progress being made than he. The organization of materials, the cleanup, and most importantly, the new roof would not have been possible without Deans expertise and energetic drive. Deans latest effort is a mega-prize raffle to Save the Sampson! The limited 500 ticket raffle offers a 1st prize of $5,000, 2nd of $4,000, 3rd of $3,000, 4th of $2,000, 5th of $1,000, and 6th of $500. Tickets are $100 and are tax deductible. Entries will be accepted right up until the drawing date of Sept. 18. Anyone wishing to purchase tickets may get them from Dean or any other members of the PY Theatre Co. or Sampson Advisory Boards, or by making a check or money order out to The Pennsylvania Yankee Theatre Co. or The Sampson Theatre and sending it to: The Pennsylvania Yankee Theatre Co. Pirates if Penzance! will benefit the renovation of the Sampson Theatre. The Sampson Theatre is a Vaudeville-Opera house built in 1910 on Elm St. in Penn Yan by Dr. Frank Sampson. It is
one of the first poured concrete structures in the country. The Sampson ceased operation as a theatre in the early 1930s, and was then used as an automobile dealership and even-
tually a tire warehouse until being donated to the Pennsylvania-Yankee Theatre Co. by the
Trombley family in the hope of seeing it put back to its original purpose.
