<To begin>
Thank you very much for your cooperation with us. The multilingual translation project has continued to translate episodes both on the web site and for the book with the help of a large volunteer staff. As you know, the book "PRAY FOR JAPAN" will become an e-Book application, and we decided to continue to translate with volunteer work. The mission of this project is to show gratitude for the support and prayers Japan received from all over the world, and to ease the anxiety of foreigners living in Japan in their mother tongue. Users who buy the eBook will have access to all the languages within the app. This means that the more languages we translate, the more people of different nationalities can read the episodes. All of the sales earnings (excluding costs) will be donated to support the reconstruction efforts by the prayforjapan.jp editorial team and Koudan-sha (the publishing company in Japan). In other words, all of your translation efforts will lead to donations and directly benefit the disaster zone. This "multilingual translation project" is a new type scheme of helping each other in the age of social networking. We hope that through this project, we can make sure what happened on March 11th 2011 will not be forgotten, and that in the future we will be able to help each other across language boundaries when something sad happens in somewhere in the world.

<Procedure of translation work>

1. Access Google Docs
An email inviting you to join the Google Docs document will be sent to you after the message that this manual is attached to. Upon receiving the invitation, please go to http://docs.google.com/ and log in with your Google account to access the Google Docs home screen.

2. Open the collection PFJ-eBook_PJ

A collection as shown here will be displayed on your home screen.

When you open this collection, a list of spreadsheets and pdf files will be displayed as shown below.

3. First, take a look at the books design

You can see the design of the published book by clicking on the file Pray for Japan001-120_100_150.pdf. Some episodes will be changed for the eBook, but you can get an idea of what the project will look like.

4. Open the file for your language assignment

Open the spreadsheet for the language youre responsible for. When you click on the file (name of language) version, you will see a page like the one below.

The first row contains the names of each category, with the content beginning from the second row. The categories are as follows: Page Status Category Shows the page number Shows the status of the translaton. The three statuses are not_yet, need_check, and done. Shows the type of content. Categories include instruction, episode, episode_title, credit, caption, msg_text, and msg_person. This column contains the original Japanese content. It cannot be changed The English translation from the book. This also cannot be changed. Contains the name of the last person to edit the item The name of the person who checked an item marked need_check

5. Translate passages
Now lets get down to the actual translation. The procedure is as follows. 5.1. Items marked not_yet should be translated in the [Language] column First look for items that have not yet been translated. These items will be denoted by not_yet in the Status column. Please translate while consulting the Japanese and English versions of the text. Your translation should go into column F, which is named for the target language. 5.2. Change the status to need_check Your translations will be checked and verified by other volunteers. Please change the Status to need_check so that this can occur. 5.3. Enter your name into the Last modifier column Be sure to put your last name into column G (Last Modifier) in roman characters.

6. Check translations
Below is the process for checking translations. We ask that someone checks each translation in order to verify accuracy. 6.1. Read translations marked with need_check in the Status column. Read the translation and verify it against the Japanese or English original. If there are no problems, go to step 6.2, if there are problems, go to 6.3.

6.2. If there are no errors, mark the status column done and enter your name in the Checker column. If there are no errors, change the status to done to indicate that the translation is complete and enter your name in the Checker column. 6.3. If there are errors, make changes and change the Status and Checker columns as explained below. Please correct what needs to be corrected. In the case of small edits such as spelling mistakes or missing words, change the status to done and put your name in the Checker column. However, in the event of a major edit (over half of the words changed, completely different expressions, etc) we ask that you leave the status as need check and change the Last Modifier to your name, so that another volunteer can check the new translation.

Q&A
1. I deleted parts of the spread on accident while working! Not to worry, press control+Z or command+Z to undo. 2. I accidently deleted the entire spreadsheet! Its probably in the Trash bin, so check there and return it to normal. In the unlikely chance that you completely delete it, dont panic and please contact the translation project coordinator Endo. Although deleted files cannot be recovered, Endo periodically backs up the project. 3. I want to get in touch with the other people working on the translation! Although we cannot give you their email addresses, it is possible to get in contact through Facebook. It is also possible to use the Google Docs chat function when you are logged in at the same time as other collaborators. 4. What will happen to the translations? Your translations will be sent to the design section of Koudansha to be added to the Pray for Japan eBook app, which will be sold for 350 yen. Upon downloading the application, users will be able to select from all the languages. Excluding development and sale costs, all profits and royalties from the project will be donated to disaster recovery efforts. Specifically, Koudansha will be responsible for distributing profits, while the prayforjapan.jp staff will be responsible for distributing royalties to organizations involved in the recovery, to be announced later.
