Monster Tajima Readies Electric Ride For Pikes Peak

Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima owns Pikes Peak, having summited quicker than anyone else these past six years. According to Green AutoBlog, his 2012 ascent will take place in a battery-powered racer for Team APEV (Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicl es). That car, the Monster Sport E-RUNNER Pikes Peak Special, has just been reveal ed. The wraps came off this weekend in Tok yo at Toyota's Mega Web automotive theme park and, with a carbon fiber body and bubble roof, it looks pretty amazing. Unfortunately, no specifications have been released so far, but we suspect it has enough electric ponies to best his world-beating 9:51.278 record set just last year. Especiall y considering the path to the top will have no gravel road segments, as it has in years past.)

You can watch the covers being pulled off publicly for the first time, along with bonus footage of it in action on the track on Green AutoBlog's website here.

Enterprise Adds OpConnect Charging Stations in CA

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is installing OpConnect Electric Vehicl e Charging Stations in their Santa Monica and Torrance, California offices. The pilot program was brokered by OpConnects exclusive distributor, Go EV. With this development, the OpConnect charging stations will be used to recharge Ent erprises growing fleet of electric vehi cles. Both locations have many electric vehi cles so OpConnects unique quad port design allows Enterprise to use one station to recharge four vehicles at the same time, unlike competing charging stations limited to charging vehicles two at a time. This rapid recharge ability will help Enterprise to keep its fleet of vehicles on the road. In addition, the OpConnect stations are networked to restrict charging to Enterprises customers. Enterprise has been a leader in the adoption of electric vehicl es into their rental fleet and we are pleased to include these facilities into our growing charging infrastructure network, said Dexter Turner, President of OpConnect. Southern California is a growing electric vehicle market for Enterprise and for the OpConnect system. Customers now can rent electric vehicl es (EV) from Enterprise Rent -A-Car in 12 locations, operating the largest network of EV rentals in the state. We are thrilled to offer our customers a faster and more convenient way to use electric vehi cles, said Greg Tabak, director of business rental for Enterprise in Southern California. Our partnership with OpConnect enhances our ability to provide customers with the ultimate test drive when renting an electrical vehicle. Enterprise has the largest network of car rental locations, making it a key part of the value chain. Partnerships like this help manufacturers conduct hundreds of thousands of test drives that are essential to the adoption of new technology.

Do You Know The Benefits Of Biking

From BikesBelong.Org

1. Bicycling is for everyone Its the 2nd most popular outdoor activity in the United States. 47% of Am ericans say they would like more bike facilities in their town. Most trips Americans make are short: 50% are less than 3 miles, 40% are less than 2 miles, and 28% are less than 1 mile. 2. Bicycling can help you live longer and better. Adults who bike to work have better weight, blood pressure, and insulin levels. Women who bike 30 minutes a day have a lower risk of breast cancer. Adolescents who bicycle are 48% less likely to be overweight as adults. 3. Bicycling boosts the economy The U.S. bicycle industry sold $5.6 billion in bicycles and equipment in 2009. Three times as many new bicycles (14. 9 million) are sold in the U.S. each year than car s (4.6 million). Studies have shown that homes closer t o bike paths are more valuable. 4. Bicycling is less expensive than driving a car The average American househould spends $7,179 per year on owning and driving their cars. On a round-trip commute of 10 miles, bicyclists save around $10 daily. (Commute Solutions, 2011) 5. Bicycling reduces road congestion and air pollution Traffi c congestion wastes nearl y 3.9 billion gallons of gas per year in the U.S. For every 1 mile pedaled rather than driven, nearly 1 pound of CO (0.88 lbs) is saved. 6. Bicycling is safe, and together we can make it safer The health benefits of cycling outweigh the risks by a factor of 20 to one. (Hillman, M., 1992) There is safety in numbers: the more cyclists there are, the safer bicycling is.

Nissan Taxi Van Goes Nissan will produce an el ectric version of its New Electric of Tomorrow" van next year, the York City "Taxi
MSN Autos reports. The NV200, a stubby, high-top compact van chosen by the cit y last year to be its official taxi, is typical of the slim-bodied vans used by families and businesses in Japan. The el ectric e-NV200, sporting a Leaf-like nose, will offer "similar performance" and range to the Leaf but with dual sliding doors. Nissan said it has several prototypes running around Europe, but would not confirm if the electric van would come to the U.S. Considering that Ford is now selling the Transit Connect El ectric, which has a range between 50 to 80 miles, Nissan will probably jump at the chance. Inside, the 5-passenger van features what appears to be a touch -capacitive dash, compared with the Leaf's squarer panel with plastic buttons on U.S. models. The seats also appear to be mounted high above the floor, likely to accommodate the battery pack (as the Leaf does) in front. Nissan did not provide further specifications, production volumes or prices.
