For the second week in a row
transparency in the borough was
questioned at length by a frus-
trated resident. The borough
commissioners defended the
method by which they notify
their official newspapers about
meetings and how they dissemi-
nate information.
Janet Hallahan peppered the
commissioners with questions
in regard to a new sidewalk
being installed on Washington
Avenue. Hallahan was frustrated
that as a taxpayer she and other
residents not in the Washington
Avenue area were not notified of
the boroughs decision to install
a sidewalk on the street while it
was being repaved.
It might not sound like that
big of a deal, Hallahan said, but
the frustrated resident said it
was a microcosm of how busi-
ness is done in the borough. She
questioned why all of the Had-
donfield taxpayers were not noti-
fied of the decision to put in the
sidewalk, which will cost about
$66,000 for both sides if the bor-
ough moves forward.
Why was I, the taxpayer, not
notified about a new sidewalk
that I am paying for? she said.
The commissioners defended

trainer
travels to
U.S. Open
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
After Andy Zhang, 14, nailed a
birdie on the 18th hole at the
Olympic Club during the first
round of the 2012 U.S. Open
Championship, his caddie Chris
Gold said it was probably the
most exhilarating moment of a
historic weekend.
Chris Gold, a Haddonfield Me-
morial High School graduate, is
the trainer and manager for ama-
teur golfer Zhang. Zhang was the
youngest golfer to ever qualify for
the U.S. Open in the history of the
professional golf championship,
which was held from June 14 to
June 17.
Zhang ended up not making
the cut, but improved each day he
was on the course. His opening
round score was a nine-over, 79,
but he improved to a seven-over,
77, in the second round. He had
some esteemed company of
golfers who didnt make the cut,
with the 2012 Masters Champion
Bubba Watson and last years U.S.
Open Champion Rory McIlroy
being two of many golfers who
joined him in a two-round exit.
It was a tough course to play,
with the eventual winner, Webb
Simpson, shooting a one-over par
after four rounds of play.
Not too shabby for a 14-year-old
golfer.

Price and Price Elder Law in
Haddonfield has been serving the
South Jersey region for more
than 30 years.
Protecting ones assets, finding
the right long-term care support
and ensuring proper health care
coverage are some of the many
challenges the elderly and their
families must address. This be-
comes especially important when
a loved one experiences a life-
changing healthcare emergency.
Most families are not prepared
with the necessary legal docu-
ments to transition their loved
one from the hospital to an assist-
ed living community, nursing
home or other healthcare center.
These documents include a liv-
ing will and power of attorney.
Price and Price Elder Law has
introduced a new service called
Mobile Interactive Law Office
(MiLO), which allows staff to
meet home-bound or facility-
based clients on-site in an emer-
gency by video teleconference. All
legal work, including document
preparation and execution, can
be completed at that time at the
Price and Price office and
emailed to a remote location.
Price and Price client liaisons
will bring all necessary video
equipment to the home or facility
to initiate the on-line interview
with an attorney.
Following the on-line inter-
view, all legal documents can be
prepared, printed and formalized
for immediate delivery to the
client. MiLO allows Price and
Price to meet the needs of their
clients in a fast and cost effective
manner, especially for family
members who may be located out
of state. The target time to com-
plete this service is 24 hours
when the client has the capacity
to understand and approve the
documents. The following servic-
es are available with the MiLO
program:
Initial consultation / client in-
terview.
Power of attorney.
Living will.
The Price and Price Elder Law
team demonstrated the Mobile In-
teractive Law Office (MiLO) serv-
ice at its main office in Haddon-
field on Tuesday, May 22. Nearly
100 local healthcare professionals
from hospitals, rehab centers, as-
sisted living communities, nurs-
ing homes, hospice and home-
care agencies attended to learn
how MiLO can be used to help
their clients.
Please contact Price & Price
with any questions at (856) 429-
5522.
Demonstrations of the MiLO
service are also available upon re-
quest at any local South Jersey or
Philadelphia healthcare facility.

in our opinion
F
rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things are in our coun-
try our economy is still poor, unem-
ployment is extremely high and the
Phillies cant seem to win a baseball
game anymore things could be a lot
worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in China, where we recently learned of
how real and barbaric the nations one-
child-only policy really is.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Con-
gress and where the office of the presi-
dent have functioned and survived for
236 years.
We live in a nation where, for the
most part, were free to do as we please.
This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liber-
ties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places in the Middle
East and abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
today.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.
Happy Fourth of July
A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are

Stolen bench needs to be
returned to rightful place
Since June of 1998, when I moved to my
home on Kings Highway, an old bench
(which I inherited with the house) has
been a fixture on the front porch. It has ac-
commodated many passers by, providing
respite for weary shoppers or shade from
the sun. On occasional nights, it has hosted
those with nowhere else to sleep. Once, it
was pressed into action by a loving couple,
wanting to use the house as a backdrop to
their engagement photograph. Family
groups have arranged themselves on it for
holiday snapshots; loyal supporters of
many town parades have taken advantage
of its prime location.
On the night of June 25, the old bench
was stolen. Perhaps it was a prank; maybe
it was recognized as a profitable collectible
by a nighttime prowler.
Unrealistically, I hope that the old bench
will be returned to its rightful place.
What a shame.

audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly

Anne Anderson
June 23, 2012
Anne Anderson (nee Gentles)
died on June 23.
The resident of Collingswood
was formerly a long-time Had-
donfield resident and the beloved
wife of the late Gustave W. Loving
mother of William F. (Nancy) and
Elizabeth Anderson-Domer
(Jack).
Also survived by two grand-
children, Laura Anne Camp
(Jason) and Gustave W. Anderson
(Noel), two great grandchildren
and her sister, Margaret
Gentles.
For many years, Anderson had
been a volunteer for the Camden
County Girl Scouts. Additionally,
she had volunteered for Bancroft
School and Kingsway Learning
Center, both located in Haddon-
field.
Interment was at the Sunset
Memorial Park, Somerton, Pa.

obituary
the way business is done in the
borough, pointing to the fact that
notices were sent out to residents
near Washington Avenue notify-
ing them that the engineers were
considering installing a sidewalk
on the street while the road im-
provements were completed.
Mayor Tish Colombi said the
public information meeting was
well attended with Washington
Avenue neighbors, with about 30
residents attending the informal
meeting at borough hall.
However, Colombi said the
commissioners did agree to try
and post the agendas prior to the
meetings by at least 48 hours to
give residents time to process in-
formation.
Hallahan also questioned the
need for a sidewalk in the area,
asking why it was necessary to
spend more than $60,000 on tax-
payer money for the walkway.
Sidewalks are good for proper-
ty values, good for safety, and
good for the walkability of the
town, Commissioner Ed Borden
said.
She went on to criticize the
commissioners for also violating
the intent of the open public
meetings act law by not paying
their two official newspapers for
meetings they dont want the pub-
lic to know about. The borough
just has to send meeting notices
to newspapers 48 hours before a
special meeting is announced,
but the newspapers dont have to
publish them.
The borough is 100 percent in
accordance with the open public
meetings act, Borough Solicitor
Mario Iavicolli said. Haddonfield
sends a complete list of its yearly
meetings to its two official news-
papers in January each year and
always sends notice for a special
meeting at least 48 hours prior.
The borough actually goes
above and beyond the open public
meetings act by posting agendas
online prior to the meetings, he
said.

Zhang said that having a
steady, older presence like Gold
by his side during the tourna-
ment helped him immensely. It
helped him not only in golf, but
also with the sometimes suffocat-
ing media presence at the open.
Gold helped him through inter-
views and kept the throngs of
media at bay during the few days
leading up to the championship
open.
Last weekend was a great
learning experience for both of
us. It was his first time carrying a
bag in the U.S. Open. Hes always
been very helpful to me, not just
to improve my skills or caddie-
wise, but he helps me mentally, es-
pecially the past weekend,
Zhang said while on the driving
range with Gold two weeks ago.
Gold, a 25-year-old golfer who
has reached the sectionals of a
U.S. Open qualifying match him-
self, has been training Zhang for
the past five months. Zhangs fa-
ther approached Gold while he
was working on his own game at
the driving range at Reunion Re-
sort golf in Orlando and asked if
he would be interested in training
and managing his son.
Luckily for Gold and Zhang, he
agreed. Five months later, Gold
said this past weekend was one of
the most amazing experiences of
his entire life.
Walking up to the first tee on
the opening round was awe in-
spiring, Gold said. Cameras were
trained on Zhang for just about
every single shot the entire time
he was in the open.
Going up to the first tee was
just awesome. He hit it well, but
he hit in into the left rough. We
didnt start off too well obviously,
he was eight-over after the first
five holes, Gold said. But for a
14 year old to stay calm it was
great. I just told him that we need
to relax. Starting off poorly really
took the pressure off; we didnt
start off on the right foot. I told
him that we just needed to relax
and play Andy Zhang golf. He set-
tled down and played well after
that.
The most star-struck the duo
was all weekend? Gold said it was
actually a practice round before
the opening day of the U.S. Open
that Zhang played with Bubba
Watson, who won the 2012 Mas-
ters.
It was nerve wracking, Gold
said, to share a course with Wat-
son.
The practice round with
Bubba was so laid back, it was
great, Gold said. It showed us
that theyre all just normal guys
and play golf for a living. It was a
great experience.
Gold will practice with Zhang
for the next two months before
Zhang takes a break and heads
back to Beijing for a well-earned
vacation. As for Golds golf ca-
reer, he is still focusing on mak-
ing a run himself.
But right now? Its all about
Andy.
Hes got a few more U.S.
Opens in him. I told him to just
enjoy the experience and have
fun.

According to Kathi Stokes,
president of Haddonfields Crows
Woods Gardeners, the group is
still welcoming gardeners who
are pining to grow their own
fresh vegetables.
Emergencies force a few gar-
deners to drop out each summer,
Stokes said. So interested gar-
deners can sign up even now to
take over when a plot becomes va-
cant.
With a major expansion of the
gardens this spring, some 100 gar-
deners are now planting, harvest-
ing, weeding their plots at
the boroughs Crows Woods com-
plex.
With plenty of rain and sun-
shine this spring, lettuce,
spinach, radishes, snow peas, and
Swiss chard have already provid-
ed bumper crops.
Some gardeners expect to pick
ripe yellow squash soon.
New gardeners pay $20 for a
half plot. Application may be
printed from the Crows Woods
Gardens website at www.crows-
woodsgardeners.com.

By ROBERT TULINI
Special to The Haddonfield Sun
The Rev. Monsignor William
Patrick Brennan, pastor of Christ
the King Parish in Haddonfield
for three years and a priest in the
Catholic Diocese of Camden for
49 years, celebrated his retire-
ment at a Mass and dinner on
June 24.
Brennan, 75, a longtime pastor
and high school principal, retired
on June 30.
Four hundred people filled
Christ the King Church for the re-
tirement Mass celebrated by
Brennan. They included rela-
tives, friends, priests, nuns, dea-
cons, former students and parish-
ioners.
Then, 400 people filled Holy Eu-
charist Parish Hall in Cherry
Hill, where Brennan was the pas-
tor before going to Christ the
King, for the retirement dinner.
Whether as a teacher, princi-
pal or pastor, you deal with people
and getting to know them is so
important, Brennan said.
Preparing a class, preparing for
a school meeting, preparing a
homily is important, because you
are showing you care you are
showing respect.
Brennan was born on July 8,
1936 on Staten Island. He studied
at Immaculate Conception Semi-
nary in Darlington. He was or-
dained a priest in Camden on
May 25, 1963, embarking on his
calling to education and pastoral
ministry.
I remember when I first start-
ed teaching, a sister friend of
mine gave me some advice, which
I have used through the years.
She said you dont teach Eng-
lish, history or religion, you teach
people, Brennan said. If you ex-
pect good things from your stu-
dents, you are more than likely to
get good things back. Learning to
know your students is more im-
portant sometimes than knowing
your subject matter, but prepar-
ing conscientiously for class
shows genuine love and respect
for your students.
He said he has used that philos-
ophy in his interactions with
adults as well as children.
Brennan taught history and re-
ligion at Gloucester Catholic
High School in Gloucester City
from 1964 to 1969 and taught histo-
ry and religion at Camden
Catholic High School in Cherry
Hill from 1969 to 1973.
He was the principal of
Gloucester Catholic High School
from 1973 to 1976 and the princi-
pal of Camden Catholic High
School from 1976 to 1984.
Brennan was the pastor of In-
carnation Parish in Mantua
Township from 1985 to 1997 and
the pastor of St. Pius X Parish,
now called Holy Eucharist
Parish, in Cherry Hill from 1997
to 2009.
He was pastor of Christ the
King Parish since 2009.
He said he is grateful for the
people he has met and the time he
has spent as a priest.
Someone asked me if I would
do it all again, Brennan said. In
a heartbeat.
Kelly Hullihan, a parishioner
at Christ the King, said Brennans
words and deeds have benefited
her and her family.
Our family listens and learns
from Monsignor Brennan, Hulli-
han said. He is a terrific homilist
and teacher. We are inspired by
him.
