QUESTION 3 Traditionally animal models in biomedical research have made used of rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits. But larger domestic animals are becoming more valid as research models because their anatomy and physiology are more similar to humans. Also, their body and organ sizes are much closer to humans. a) Define the term Biopharming. (2 marks) b) Discuss issues (societal, religious, environmental, safety) involving transgenic livestock in biomedical research. (Hint: transgenic livestock have been used as disease models, as organ and tissue donors, xenogenic cells and tissues, producers of new medications). (8 marks)
