Laboratory 2 Impression materials Answer the following questions and hand in your report as a group (typed not hand written)
a. Questions: With regard to alginate impression materials, answer the following: (2 mark) i. Describe the mixing motion used to mix alginate powder with water when preparing an impression. by moving the alginate with water in 8 shape movement in order to have no particles inside it .

b. Questions: a. With regard to impression compound material: i. Name two forms of impression compound available for clinical use. 1) Cake (sheet) form 2) Stick form (3 marks)

ii. Describe very briefly the setting mechanism of impression compound material? After softening the compound in hot water at 60 degrees we put it on a tray with leaving 24mm bulk material and then put it in the patients mouth, after 2-5 minutes at 37 degrees it becomes firm so we remove it quickly and put it in a moist environment to avoid its deformation, then we send the impression material to the lab, it gives us a negative copy of the teeth ( soft tissue and hard tissue).

i. What is the main cause of dimensional instability of condensation silicon material? Condensation reaction that produces ethyl alcohol as by product. The alcohol evaporates which causes dimensional instability. ii. Mention one advantage of using cartridges to dispense rubber impression material? Eliminate human error iii. What is the setting time for addition silicon impression material? 3-7 min d. Question: a. Regarding Agar material, Questions: (4 marks) i. Is agar material classified as reversible or irreversible hydrocolloid material? reversible ii. What term is used to describe the contraction of agar and squeezing out of liquid onto the surface? syneresis iii. Define imbibition? uptake of water by the agar material which leads to its swelling . e. Question: i. Name two materials used for disinfecting impressions 1)Na hypochlorite 2) iodophors. (3 marks)

ii. Disinfection should be done only if the patient has an infectious disease. Is this statement TRUE or FALSE? False
