Dublin Orange
parade support
AN historic frst speech to
Dublins Parliament by a senior
Orange Order fgure yesterday
ended with Fianna Fail saying
that it was open to an Orange
Order parade through Dublin at
some point.
Orange Grand Secretary Drew
Nelson told the Seanad that
Orangemen in the Republic
would love to parade in their
capital city, although he said that
the institution recognised the
challenges that may pose.
The Fianna Fail leader in the
Seanad, Darragh OBrien, said
that he would like to see a day
when there could be an Orange
Order parade in Dublin in a
non-triumphalist way.
Mr Nelson, who also accused
republicans of demonising the
Order and said that he wanted to
see it work closer with the Irish
government, received warm
applause after his speech.
Mr Nelson said that Mary
McAleese and her husband
Martin had made yesterday
possible by opening up lines
of communications with the
Order by inviting them to Aras
an Uachtarain during her time
as president.
The British Ambassador to
Dublin, Dominick Chilcott, and
the US Ambassador, Dan Rooney,
watched on from the public
gallery yesterday.

Kennedy highlights
key role for AFBI
AFBI Chief Executive Professor Seamus Kennedy has confrmed that he expects his organisation to be actively involved in the work undertaken by the recently established Agri Food Strategy Food Board. I will be writing to Board Chairman Tony ONeill on this subject in the very near future, he told members of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists, who recently visited AFBI Loughgall as part of their All Ireland AGM itinerary. Professor Kennedy continued: AFBI is a key stakeholder within
the agri food industry. And, on that basis, it is important that our views on the future of both sectors are heard by the Board. AFBI (Agri Food and Biosciences Institute) was established in 2006 as an amalgamation of the then Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) Science Service and the Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland (ARINI). The organisation carries out high technology research and development, statutory, analytical, and diagnostic testing functions for DARD and other Government departments, public bodies and commercial companies. Professor Kennedy went on to highlight the important role
that his staff and resources play as Northern Irelands frst, and most important line of defence, in keeping pandemic diseases such as Foot & Mouth Disease, Bluetongue and Swine Flu at bay. But to keep our defences in proper response mode, it is crucially important that our scientifc staff have the opportunity to carry out scientifc research required to ensure that they can react quickly to all eventualities, he added. The AFBI representative went on to confrm that a high proportion of the research funding required in this regard must come from the public purse. When asked if local politicians recognise this need, he replied: They have been listening to our case up to this point. The
work carried out by AFBI is akin to an insurance policy. I frmly believe this is a price worth paying, so as to ensure that our largest industry retains the freedom to export locally produced food to countries and markets around the world. Regarding the structure of AFBI, Seamus Kennedy confrmed that the matter is under constant review. Signifcantly, he did not rule out the possibility that AFBIs current headquarters at Newforge Lane in Belfast the site of the former School of Agriculture at Queens University - could soon be surplus to requirements. Our fundamental objective remains that of delivering the highest quality of service to all our clients, he concluded.
