TOUR REPORT

A tour was arranged by the FC & FS for the five majors of session including Entomology, Food Technology, Horticulture, Plant Breeding & Genetics and Plant Pathology. The tour was of 6 days from 07-03-2011 to 12-03-2011 and the visiting cities were Chakwal, Sargodha, Faisalabad and Lahore. We left university sharp at 9O clock. It was a pleasant and sunny day.

OBJECTIVES:
To learn what kind of research is going on in different research institutes and how different institutes play an important role in the progress of agriculture. TEACHER ACCOMPANIED: We were accompanied by 5 teachers of all 5 majors. Dr. Asif Aziz (Entomology) Dr. Abdul Rauf (Plant Pathology) Dr. Saad (Plant Breeeding Genetics) Dr. Farzana (Food Technology) Ms. Mehwissh (Horticulture)

BARI (Chakwal):
This research institute was established in in 1979. Dr. Ghulam Rabbani welcomed us in the institute at 11:45 am. He gave us the brief introduction about the institute and the on going research in the research station. Its total area is 35 acres. It is a multi-disciplinary institute including PBG, SS, ENT, PP, AEN, AEC and HORT sections. Work done on different crops and their varities are as followed:

1-WHEAT: Chakwal-86, Rawal-87, Potohar-93, Kohsar-95, Chakwal-97, GA-2002, Chakwal-50. 2-OILSEED: Chakwal sarson and Chakwal raya. 3-PULSES: Chickpea Mung Mash Lentil Groundnut 4-OLIVE: Tofrontio, Fraya, Marvino Major work was on these but the research on almond, grape fruit, apple, fig, peach, sweet lime and chickpea was also being done. IN SERVICE AGRICULTURE TRAINING INSTITUTE (Sargodha):


At 09:00 am in morning of 08-03-2011, we reached in service agriculture training institute. Dr. M. Azam, Deputy Director welcomed us there. He briefly told us about the function of extension department. He told us about the 2 main functions of their institute which were: i) Adaptive research ii) In service Training It has three training institutes, In Daghal, In Rahim Yar Khan and in Sargodha. Training institute was made in 1961 and the training courses started here for professionals as well as farmers. Its farm area is 178 kanals. In the staff 1 Director, 5 Deputy Directors, 3 Senior Instructors, 9 Instructors, 1 Agriculture Officer and 1 Farm Managers are giving duties.

IN SERVICE FODDER RESEARCH INSTITUTE:

Assistant Botanist Mr. Maqbool Hussain welcomed us there in institute. He told us some about the history of the institute that it was established since 1924. In 1974 it was made as a separate institute. The work is going on 22 different fodder varities. Rabi crop is including Barseem and Lucerne while Kharif crop is including Sorghum, Maize and Millet. Conventional breeding methods are used here for the varities by growing their 2 lines and do crossing and after while 5-6 are grown for purity. Best yielding variety is selected for the advance yield trial. Then adaptability trials are made at about 8-10 different locations. After that at national level they are tested. Fodder varities under research are: 1- JOWAR: JS-263 Hegari JS-2002 2-SADA BAHAR: SS Hybrid Pak Sodax 3- BAJRA: 4- MAIZE: 5- GUARA: 6- RAWAN: 7- JAI: 8- BARSEEM: 9- LUCERNE: Multi cut MB-87 SGD-2002 Mazenta BR-90 BR-99 Rawan-2003 Evan PD 2 LV 65 Ageeti Pacheti SGD-Lucerne

CITRUS RESEARCH INSTITUTE (Sargodha):

At the same day at about 12:50 pm we reached in citrus research institute. Director Dr. Altaf Hussain told us about the institute.

OBJECTIVES, ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS:


More than 87% citrus in Sargodha Sargodha is HUB of Citrus Pakistan is at 11th position in world by production

Causes of Low Yield:


Unavailability of certified plants Acute shortage of irrigation water Nutrition imbalance Excessive insect/pest attack High soil pH and brackish underground water Faulty culture practices Unawareness about modern citrus production technology

Objectives:
To introduce new varities Promotion of seedless orange varities Executing research for improvement of yield and quality Identification of research on diseases and pests present and to find effective control measures To conduct studies for reduction of post harvest losses Research on nursery management Advisory services to growers

Achievements:
Varities diversification Khanzada shadiwal 1&2 23 varities of sweet oranges including seedless varities

Most Important Diseases In Citrus:


Citrus canker is the most disasterous disease Foot rot is also an important disease A new disease, Greening, is now spreading

AYUB AGRICULTURE RESEARCH INSTITUTE (Faisalabad):


Ayub Agriculture Research Institute is one of the main national agriculture institutes. It has different departments like Post harvest research centre Food technology department, Agriculture economics department, Forestry department agronomy department,

Food Technology Department:


We visited the post harvest section where research on different aspects of post harvest were being carried out like storage of different fruits and vegetables, their shelf life at different temperatures and in different conditions. Then we visited another section and took briefing about drying of different vegetables, their finished shape an research being carried out their on different types of bakery products with respect to medical aspects and squashes and drinks by Dr. Ahmad Din. Then we visited peeling section and different equipments. After that we visited cereal labs and took briefing on different equipments their uses and future planes.

PUNJAB FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE GUTWALA (Faisalabad):

On 10-03-2011 we went to forest research institute Gutwala, where we visited the many trees cultivated and the insect pest attack on those trees. Besides this we visited small nurseries of trees raised without seed.

LANDSCAPE AND FLORICULTURE, BAGHE-JINNAH (Lahore):


On 11-03-2011 we visited Bagh-e-Jinnah Lahore. It was really a nice place to visit with respect to aesthetic sense. The landscaping and floriculture designs were very awesome. There we visited their floriculture nursery and tissue culture lab. We also visited their training section of the institute.

SOIL SURVEY OF PAKISTAN (Lahore):


The headquarters of this institute is in Lahore while regional offices are in Peshawar, Quetta and Hyderabad. This institute is under ministry of food and agriculture.

Research:
Collection of land resource data Characters involving all which effect plant root Soil depth is calculated Established in 1962 with help of UNDP Preparation of land resource of country Scientific investigation of all major physical and chemical characters of soil is soil survey.

RICE RESEARCH INSTITUTE KALA SHAH KAKU:


This institute was established in 1926. Dr. Azhar Mustafa gave us lecture.

Basmati-515, Super basmati, Basmati-200, Basmati-385, Shaheen basmati

Yield Limiting Factors:


Low plant population Scarcity of water Delayed transplanting Imbalance use of fertilizer Weed infestation 20-50% damage Disease problem Insect pest leaf folders and hoppers

Research at PP Department:
In Plant Pathology section research is being done on different diseases of rice like Bakane disease, brown leaf spot, stem rot and paddy blast and their cultural and chemical control.

Research Activities:
Comparative population studies of different rice pests Rice stem borers Rice leaf folders Plant hoppers

Food technology section


Here a pilot scale rice bran oil extractor and purifier is installed and research on making rice bran oil fit for consumption is being carried out because its worlds healthiest vegetable oil somewhat similar to olive oil with respect to its fatty acid profile. Then we visited a pilot scale plant for production of parboiled rice on different temperatures and timings.

RECREATION ON TOUR:
During the tour we enjoyed a lot. Our stay was in the university hostels during our visit to these 3 cities. During the tour besides study we got a

chance to see those places which were in our dreams from a long time. The dinners at food street and fortress stadium were very memorable. For this I am very grateful to our faculty and accompanied teachers for such a nice and memorable tour with respect to a lot of information and recreation.
