Put your memory to work: Secrets of success from the USA Memory Champion
(ARA) - Everyone uses their memory
at some point during their work day.
Whether you are a teacher, stay-at-home
mom, medical professional, skilled
laborer, restaurant server, or specialize
in another craft, your hippocampus - the
part of the brain that supports short-term
memory - is critical for remembering
important appointments, names and even
where you parked your car.
A recent survey conducted by NMI
Research and DSM Nutritional Products
found that 84 percent of more than 1,000
respondents ranked memory as being
the most important occupational skill.
Other top ranking skills include problem
solving (85 percent) and organizational
skills (87 percent).
Nelson Dellis, 28, the two-time USA
Memory Champion, works as a memory
consultant by day. Dellis went on to win
the 2012 USA Memory Championship
after memorizing and recalling 303 ran-
dom digits in less than fve minutes.
Many people ask me whats the secret
to memorizing random names, faces,
numbers, shopping lists, among many
other things, says Dellis. Im not super
human; Im a typical everyday guy who
incorporates the right mix of lifestyle
factors to help support my brain and
memory health. These lifestyle factors
include giving my memory a workout,
eating brain-healthy foods and exercis-
ing.
Dellis has a few secrets to his success,
which can be easily incorporated into
your daily routine to help support the
health of your hippocampus.
Tip 1: Exercise your hippocampus.
Engage in brain-stimulating activities, in-
cluding reading, creating art, completing
crosswords, learning a new language or
playing a new instrument. Or, start train-
ing to be a mental athlete in next years
USA Memory Championship.
Tip 2: Focus and make it interesting.
When trying to remember a persons
name, associate their name with an im-
age. Be sure to make the image inter-
esting and visualize the image on the
persons shoulder or on the top of their
head. The more outrageous the image,
the better chance youll remember their
name.
Tip 3: Eat a brain-healthy diet. Foods rich
in DHA omega-3 help support overall
brain health and memory function. Try
eating DHA-rich fsh (salmon, trout,
tuna) or, if youre vegetarian or want
a sustainable source of DHA, try algal
DHA-fortifed foods and beverages or
an algal DHA supplement. Look for the
lifesDHA logo on the packaging.
Tip 4: Give your body a workout. Engage
in physical activity for at least 30 minutes
a day to encourage new brain cells and
connections to form. Dellis exercises
regularly and is preparing to climb Mount
Everest in early 2013.

New research shows health benefts of salt
(ARA) - In a recent New York Times article, award
winning science journalist Gary Taubes describes
the considerable efforts and expenditures made by
government public health agencies to support and
promote salt restriction, despite clinical evidence
which does not support population-wide salt reduction
strategies.
According to Taubes, a food of new research published
in the last two years has not only shown the health
benefts of salt but also revealed the risks of low-
sodium diets.
There was no disputing that salt is a natural, no-
calorie and tasty nutrient essential for life, but the
biggest nutrition story in recent years is the proof
that following the governments low salt advice could
actually shorten your life, says Lori Roman, president
of the Salt Institute.

Within the past year, peer-reviewed medical studies
have documented:

* Type 1 diabetes risk: In one Australian study on
patients with type 1 diabetes, low sodium intake was
independently associated with increased all-cause
mortality and ESRD (end-stage renal disease).
* Type 2 diabetes risk: In another Australian study
with type 2 diabetes patients, lower sodium consump-
tion was associated with increased all-cause and
cardiovascular mortality.
* No cardiovascular beneft to salt reduction: A study
published in the American Journal of Hypertension
showed that eating less salt will not prevent heart
attacks, strokes or early death. On the contrary,
low-sodium diets increased the likelihood of premature
death.
* Increased risk of illness and death: The Journal of
the American Medical Association published a multi-
year study on a very large cohort that concluded that
lower salt intakes resulted in higher morbidity and
mortality.
* Negative effects of low-salt intakes: An analysis of
167 studies showed that individuals placed on the
U.S. Dietary Guidelines-recommended salt levels
experienced signifcant increases in plasma renin,
aldosterone, adrenaline, noradrenalin, cholesterol
and triglycerides - all risk factors for diabetes and
cardiovascular disease.
* Health risk of current U.S. Dietary Guidelines: In a
Journal of the American Medical Association publica-
tion, an analysis of the association between sodium
intakes and cardiovascular events in almost 29,000
adults, showed that CV risk was increased among those
with the lowest levels, equivalent to the current recom-
mendations in the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.
* Nutritional risk of current U.S. Dietary Guidelines:
The American Journal of Preventative Medicine pub-
lished an article demonstrating that following the U.S.
Dietary Guidelines for salt will result in unbalanced
and unsustainable dietary choices.
* It is well documented that the Japanese and the
Swiss enjoy among the longest life expectancy rates of
any of the worlds population groups. Less known how-
ever, is that they are also among the highest rates of
salt consumption. Comparing the available data on salt
consumption and longevity around the world indicates
that if we were to actually consume the low levels of
salt recommended in the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, our
life expectancy fgures would drop dramatically.
Taubes is far from the only journalist to have
questioned the governments policy on salt. Scientifc
American reviewed the studies and summarized its
fndings in the headline, Its time to end the war on
salt.
