Executive Summary

Objective: To study the level of awareness about child rights and perception of child labor among different sections of society in Gwalior district. Target Population: We have divided our target population in two sections on the basis of: a) Service Providers: We have chosen three segments for our study ,they are 1) Teachers 2) Police Officials 3) Anganwadi Workers b) Community: We have divided the community on the basis of their economic status: 1) Lower class 2) Lower Middle class 3) Upper Middle class 4) Upper class Sample: Teachers: We are targeting teachers from different public and private schools of Gwalior. Policemen: We are targeting policemen from different ranks from Constable to Inspector. Anganwadi workers: We are targeting workers from different regions of Gwalior. We are estimating a sample size of 35 with preferably equal numbers from each category we have defined in our population. Methodology: We will be interviewing each individual face to face, through a questionnaire. The questionnaire will comprise of a mix of open ended and close ended questions, mainly assessing their: 1) 2) 3) 4) Awareness about child rights Perception about child labor Causes of child labor Possible solutions to reduce child labor

Questionnaire would consist of some generic questions and some questions specific to each category.

Observations: Awareness among Teachers: On interviewing the teachers of private schools we found that their awareness about child rights was high and they were not in favor of child labor and practices which encourage child labor. However when government school teachers were interviewed it was found that they had mixed opinion about child labor and their awareness on child labor was low. Awareness among Police: We interviewed officials of various ranks on issues like child rights and child protection in case of a juvenile delinquency and it was found that their awareness about these issues were high. Awareness among Anganwadi Workers: Most of the supervisors and assistants lacked awareness about the rights of children and the diet that should be given to a normal and a malnourished child. Awareness among various classes of the community: Upper Class: High awareness on issues like child rights and had an opinion that child labor should be stopped. Middle Class: High on awareness of child rights, but had mixed opinions on child labor. Some said such practices cannot be stopped while some opposed it. Lower Class: Low on awareness of child rights and were in favor of child labor. Awareness about Child Line: Overall awareness of Childline was low. Very few people were actually aware of the use of Childline and didnt remember the number (1098).
