A BOY'S (V.O.)
Have you ever been lost in a fantasy?
Not like anything that of Lewis
Carroll's but something stranger..
RANMA
Why today?
GENMA
Well, because it’s raining tomorrow.
Though we all know...
(embracing the day)
glory seeps from the sky, it doesn't
fall as raindrops.
RANMA
We’re martial artists. Not
philosophers... talkative old man.
2
RANMA
I’m not a child anymore, pop.
GENMA
Since when did children get to decide
when they’re not children anymore?
RANMA
I didn’t decide this. I’m thirteen!
GENMA
So age has all to do with it?
RANMA
Well, I don’t know? Doesn’t it?
GENMA
I’m a martial artist. Not a
philosopher...
FADE UP ON
GENMA
Discipline boy...

5 EXT. FURINKAN COMMUNITY - NERIMA, JAPAN – MORNING 5
A quaint and run-of-the-mill suburban community. We see
people on their bikes, an old washer woman cleansing the
street with a ladle and bucket, another man gardening and
children whimsically playing around.

We move closer and meet:

a garage, complete with a backyard garden and pond, bonsai

SUBTITLE: Tendo School of Anything-Goes Martial Arts
We hear the SOUND of an alarm clock OFFSCREEN...
6 ECU. FLOWERY ALARM CLOCK 6
An alarm clock with its hands at 6:30 AM. The alarm
continues to go off for a beat, until a hand comes into
FRAME hitting the snooze button.
6A INT. GIRL’S BEDROOM, TENDO HOME – CONTINUOUS 6A
From her bed, arises AKANE TENDO (13) a pretty Japanese
girl with hair of silk down to her neck, she stretches
before walking out of her room and into:

AKANE
We're not late, you nag.
NABIKI
That's what you said yesterday and
the days before that. Some of us,
prefer an early routine...
KASUMI
I've noticed, you’ve been spending
more time getting ready, haven’t you?
NABIKI
(gasps, overexaggerates)
Does that mean... you like someone?
AKANE
No. Of course not!
KASUMI
I’m sure that’s not the case Nabiki.
Akane’s just getting older, more
mature.

NABIKI
Yeah which means she's becoming boy-

AKANE
The only crazy person here is you,
Nabiki.
KASUMI
(with genuine
optimism)
No, which means she'll make the
wisest choices when the situation
comes.
DR. TOFU
How are you today, Akane?
AKANE
Exasperated at the moment.

AKANE
Oh yes, it’s wonderful thanks to you.
(a beat, in shy tone)
The only downfall is... I don’t get
to see you as much.
AKANE
(to Nabiki)
Coming!
(to Tofu)
Bye, doctor!
DR. TOFU
You two take care of each other.
AKANE
What?
NABIKI
Nothing.
A MAN'S (V.O.)

NADOKA (CONT'D)
Was this the only purpose my son was
born for...?
GENMA
Nonsense! This is an obligation I
must fulfill!
NADOKA
And what if he doesn't love the girl
you've chosen?
GENMA
No if's. He will.
NADOKA
If there was ever an if: we chose
each other because of love... not to
provide longevity for your legendary
school of martial arts.
GENMA
This is no argument!
NADOKA
(reasoning)
He is my son... I argue for his sake.
GENMA
Listen here! Sons have fathers too.
It has already been arrange... Ranma
shall marry Tendo's daughter. This
martial arts school has been my life,
for the next generation to carry it
on! He will have to do the same for
his children...
