Welcome to 1st grade at QRES! I am so excited that your child will be in my class this year! This newsletter will cover my classroom behavior management system. We will be working hard this year at having a Classroom Community of Learners. We are going to focus on being Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Learn, and Safe. We will create a class pledge that revolves around these four key principles.

The behavior management system I will be using in my classroom is the Clip Chart Management

System. What I love about this plan is that it allows children to redeem themselves during the day and allows me to reward positive behavior. I am a firm believer that you can catch more flies with honey and this plan really allows for that. In this system, the words at each level are more significant than the color. Basically, every morning students will place their clip on the "Ready to Learn" portion of the chart. I love that this eliminates that false sense of accomplishment for being on "green" or the highest level just for walking though the door, and then having no where to go but down. It is completely fine for a student to remain at Ready to Learn all day, however, I love to recognize and differentiate for students who go above and beyond. This system allows me to recognize that my ok/quiet/usually-on-task student and my always-ready/super-helpful/ultra-responsible students are no longer on the same level. You will know everyday where your child was on the chart when you check their agenda. The color the student is on will be marked in their agenda. Throughout the day students move up or down the chart as their actions require. Most children want to do their best and I have found that they become quite competitive when it comes to moving up on the chart. However, there are times when a childs behavior choice is not acceptable and the student will be asked to move their clip down. The Make Better Choices space is a good attention getter for students. This space typically gives the child a chance to regroup and reconsider their actions. Many times, the childs behavior immediately improves and the student is able to return to the Ready to Learn space. Unfortunately, there may be times when a child continues to break our classroom rules. When this occurs, the child will continue down the chart to the Teachers Choice space or even on to the Parent Contact. Teachers Choice allows me to choose an immediate consequence proportionate to the action and student. Possible consequences are: loss of break or free time, or loss of classroom privileges. The last spot on the chart is the Parent Contact space. When on this space, I will contact you by phone. After three Parent Contacts, a conference will be scheduled.
