Personal Profile

On 11th January 1973, in Indore a Kannada couple Sharath and Pushpa Dravid were gifted with a son, they named him Rahul.

He belongs to a Maharashtrian Brahmin family settled in Bangalore, Karnataka. He has a younger brother, Vijay. Dravid's father worked for Kissan, a company known for producing jams and preserves and thus he earned the nickname Jammy. His mother, Pushpa, was a professor of architecture at Bangalore University.

Rahul Dravid was probably one of the last classical Test match batsmen. His progress into the national side may have been steady and methodical. Dravid established himself in the team and was the most successful batsman in the Foreign countries were conditions for batting were difficult. Armed with an orthodox technique drilled into him by Keki Tarapore. He was the most consistent batsman in the Indian team for many years and he saved and won many matches for the team As he is THE WALL of Indian Cricket Team.

Rahuls interest in cricket began to blossom when he was 10 years old. Like most boys his age, he began to knock about with a rubber ball in the streets. But with his considerable talent, it did not take him long to become an indispensable cricketer for his school side.

Dravid started playing cricket at the age of 10. Rahul Played state under15, under 17 and under 19 tournaments. Those watching Dravid play at the domestic level realized here was Mr. Potential walking around in cricket flannels. And his batting techniques, cool temperament and ability to accumulate runs these all qualities Impressed the selectors.

Rahul although a permanent member in the test team struggled to maintain his place in the one day side. Reason was his slow pace to score runs. His brilliant show in tests also didnt impress the selectors to the extent that they could give him some more chances.

After disappointing start in the ODIs dravid came back with the world cup of 99 & scored 461 runs. After that it was hard to stop him he was performing well in both ODIs and Tests . Successful Player outside India and lead Indian team to many victories against Australia, England, West Indies. After that for team he became a Wicket-Keeper. Was also a star performer in 2003 world cup in South Africa with bat and behind the wickets. Cont.

After the world cup dravid hit 3 double centuries each against Pakistan, New Zealand, & Australia. On 14 February 2007, he became the sixth player and the third Indian (after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly), to score 10,000 runs in ODIs. After that he was made Captain of the team and Success Story was Continued. After that he was left out in 2009 after flop performance continuously. Than in 2011 he played last innings of his career against England in ODIs And his test career was ended against Australia in 2012. He played only 1 T20 against England.

On 9 March 2012, he announced his retirement from international cricket.

On the same tour in an ODI against Zimbabwe in which he was the stand-in skipper Rahul got involved in a ball tempering case while unknowingly shining the ball with his chewing gum.
But because of his past clear record and his nice behavior on the field he escaped with a nominal deduction in his match fee.

The only batsman to have been involved in two ODI partnerships exceeding 300 runs. First batsman to be involved in a 300 run partnership along with Sourav Ganguly in the 1999 World Cup match against Sri Lanka at Taunton. Involved in the highest partnership in the history of ODI cricket with a 331 run partnership along with Sachin Tendulkar vs New Zealand at Hyderabad in 19992000.World Cup Records. Was also involved in 376 run with VVS Laxman in 2001 against aussies and batted out whole day. And also scored 303 with Laxman against aussies in 2003.

Rahul Dravid was 9 times awarded man of the match in test match cricket. Dravid has won 14 man of the matches in ODI matches out of which 12 have been on tour i.e. only 2 are in India. Rahul Dravid was 3 times awarded man of the series in TEST cricket and they have been won on Foreign soil. Rahul Dravid is the first captain to lead India to a Test match victory against South Africa on South African soil . Dravid lead Indian team to continuous 18 victories.

On 1/7/2012 Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) honored former Team India captain Rahul Dravid at a function held at Holkar Stadium on Saturday evening. A dressing room at Holkar Stadium was also named as Rahul Dravid Dressing Room on the occasion.

Rahul Dravid was felicitated in Mumbai by the Indian Cricket Board. While the cricketing fraternity was out in numbers, Bollywood celebrities and other big-wigs also joined the celebration to honor Dravid's 16 years of playing for India.

On 9th August 2007 Gillette has roped in Rahul Dravid as its brand ambassador. Dravid joins an elite club of global sportspersons, including Roger Federer, Thierry Henry and Tiger Woods, all of whom endorse the mens grooming brand. Dravid said, I am extremely honored to be chosen as Gillette Winner and being among the great global sporting icons of the Gillette Winners Programme. For his ability to inspire young men, for being every bit the gentleman that he is, and above all, he is an icon of true sporting values.

Sansui on 12th Feb. 2007 signed cricketer Rahul Dravid as the brand ambassador for its range of television and home theater systems. "It has always been Sansui's vision to bring the best in entertainment technology to the country. With this campaign we are charting a new path of sustained precision, quality and constant innovation," said Anil Khera, director, Sansui.

On 9th May 2006 Rahul was connected with Japanese Watch Manufacturing Company. Contract was for 2 years and for advertisement for Mens Watches. Hideaki Nakazaki, MD, Citizen Watches (India) Pvt Ltd, in an official communiqu, said, Rahul Dravid as the brand ambassador embodies the spirit of confidence, leadership and independent nature.

In school, his friends called him Jammy'. Perhaps, that was Rahul Dravid's first unofficial endorsement of a brand, even though he may not have realized it. Since Rahul's father, Mr. Sharad Dravid, was working for Kissan (an HUL brand), his friends at St Joseph's Boys' High School in Bangalore gave him that moniker.

The Karnataka Tourism Department has raised a twomember celebrity team cricket icon, Rahul Dravid, and singer and cine actress, Vasundhara Das, to act as its brand ambassador to promote the State as a preferred destination among foreign and domestic tourists. Dravid said: "while on tour to different countries, I have great opportunity to showcase my State"

In march 2012 Dravid and Harsha Bhogle together joined this campaign. They teach children about the constitution, rights of the citizens and duties they have to do for the society.

On 24 November, 2005 Rahul Dravid and South African player Graeme Smith took time off the field today to express support for children affected by HIV/AIDS. I am signing onto the AIDS campaign because I know whats required to beat back AIDS is the kind of teamwork that is needed to overcome our biggest challenges, Dravid said.
