EXPERIMENTATION
A Single-Cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine of 5 Hp is used. Engine operated at constant speed of 1500 rpm in both states. A specially designed venture type LPG Carburetor installed in air supply system. A U-tube manometer to measure the Air-LPG consumption. A Mechanical dynamometer of rope-brake type for brake power measurement.
EXPERIMENTATION
Initially operated with 100% diesel and at six different loads(0-5 Kg) Then diesel supply slowly reduced and LPG supply is increased. Again engine is operated at different loads (0-5 Kg) Some of the typical parameters evaluated and plotted during experimentation are:
EXPERIMENTATION
Brake Power Air-Fuel Ratio Mechanical Efficiency LPG consumption diesel Consumption Brake Thermal Efficiency Specific Fuel Consumption Coolant Losses Exhaust Gas Losses
RESULTS OF EXPERIMENT
Air fuel ratio is constant for Pure Diesel operation It varies from 53% to 38% with load in case of dual-fuel mode. Mechanical efficiency found to increase with load for both modes. However, rate of increase is much higher in dual-fuel mode compare to pure diesel mode. Brake specific fuel consumption found to decrease with increase in load for both modes. Brake Thermal efficiency is more for pure diesel at low loads but at high loads its more in dual-fuel mode. Exhaust gas losses are much lower for dual-fuel mode.
CONCLUSION
The dualfuel operation of engine can conserve diesel up-to 80%. In Present study diesel could be conserved 45% due to practical limitations. The Brake Power of engine on dual-fuel operation is 15% more compare to pure diesel operation. The Mechanical Efficiency of the engine for dual-fuel mode is much higher to that of pure diesel operation. The engine exhaust losses are smaller for dual-fuel mode but the coolant losses are higher. The engine operation is found to be smoother in dual-fuel mode due to better mixing of air & LPG. Precious Diesel can be conserved by the dual-fuel operation without sacrificing the engine performance.
