Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Why have you selected this career?


I have worked as an office manager for 5 years and assisted the accountant with bookkeeping duties. I am very knowledgeable about finances and enjoy my work. All businesses require some type of accounting service, so jobs are in demand.

What is the education required for this career?


Bachelor's degree in Accounting

What else is required to work in this profession?


Accountants must pass a Uniform CPA Examination in the state they wish to practice. Some states also require an Ethics Exam. Before a state CPA license is issued, accountants must also meet certain requirements for previous accounting experience. Requirements vary from state to state.

What is involved in performing the job?


Responsible for keeping accurate financial records for individuals and businesses Develop, maintain, and analyze budgets Analyze financial data of business operations to project future revenues and expenses Prepare financial reports for management Prepare tax returns

What skills are required for this job?


Knowledge of Economics, accounting principles and practices Laws, legal codes, and government regulations Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their application Computer skills needed to implement and maintain accounting systems using latest technology and software programs Excellent writing skills needed for financial reports and documentation of accounting records

What is the entry level salary?


Entry level salaries for accountants range from $35,627 to $51,618, depending on where you live. CPAs can earn significantly more, with a salary range of $47,831 to $71,195.

Where are the jobs located and where are you planning to live?
CPAs can work in a variety of different settings such as

Businesses, corporations, banks or other financial institutions Municipal, state, or federal government agencies Start their own private practice I plan on living in Silver City, New Mexico.

What do you hope to accomplish once you are employed in this career?
I would like to be an advocate for small businesses by helping them become more efficient and profitable, which will have a positive impact in my community. I would like to become a CPA within 2 years of starting my accounting career. After obtaining my CPA license, I would like to open my own private practice.
