Cellular Digital Packet Data

By:ESHA TANDON E.I. 3rd Yr 0900132043

INTRODUCTION
Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) is a technique used for transmitting small chunks of data, commonly referred to as packets, over the cellular network in a reliable manner. It allows users to send and receive data from anywhere in the cellular coverage area at any time, quickly and efficiently. CDPD technology provides extensive, high speed (data can be sent over the Airlink at a rate of 19.2 kilobits per second), high capacity, cost effective data services to mobile users. With this technology, both voice and data can be transmitted over existing cellular channels.

MAIN COMPONENTS
The CDPD overlay network is made up of a combination of key components that operate together to provision the overall service. These components are described below: The Mobile End System (M-ES) The Fixed End System (F-ES) The Mobile Data Intermediate System (MD-IS) The Mobile Data Base Station (MDBS) The Intermediate System (IS)

HOW IT WORKS
RAW DATA Reed-Solomon forwarderror-correcting code The information and parity bits in each block are exclusive-ORed with a pseudorandom sequence

RECEIVER

Encryption and Decryption

MDBS and MES modems

COMPARISON
CDPD
Efficient for short to large burst transmission.
No call set-up or take down delays. Broadcast capabilities. One log-on at power up. Power ramping for short bursts. Airlink security.

Circuit Switched
Efficient for very large transmissions. Call set-up and take down required. Point to point connections. Log-on (call) for every transmission. Power ramping for entire connection. Airlink unsecured.

ADVANTAGES
Pricing is on a per packet basis which means the user pays only for the data that is sent. It costs approximately $1 million to build out a new cellular cellsite and only about $50,000 to build the CDPD overlay to an existing site. It uses idle times between cellular voice calls on the cellular telephone network.

DISADVANTAGES
Limited bandwidth: 19.2kbps shared per channel Modern applications demand more bandwidth. It sends each packet intermittently, when there is "space" available Security: Man in the middle identity theft attack IP network attacks Denial of Service attacks easy.

APPLICATIONS
TRANSACTION APPLICATIONS: Credit Card Verification Electronic Mail Notification and Delivery

BATCH APPLICATIONS: File transfers Statistical Information Transfer

Broadcast Applications: Weather Advisories Private Bulletin Boards
