THE CASE FOR OUR LIVES: CHAMPIONING HUMAN DIGNITY AROUND THE WORLD
The march of scientific progress that now promises to give us manipulative power over human nature itself a coercive power mostly exercised, as C.S. Lewis presciently noted in the Abolition of Man, by some men over other men, and especially by one generation over future generations will eventually compel us to take a stand on the meaning of human dignity, understood as the essential and inviolable core of our humanity.

THE CASE FOR OUR LIVES: CHAMPIONING HUMAN DIGNITY AROUND THE WORLD
"It is a serious thing," says Lewis, "to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no 'ordinary' people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations -- these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit -- immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously -- no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be a real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner -- no mere tolerance or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment."
THE CASE FOR OUR LIVES: CHAMPIONING HUMAN DIGNITY AROUND THE WORLD
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put a hand on the adders den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea

"To advance human good and avoid harm, biotechnology must be used within ethical constraints. It is the task of bioethics to help society develop those constraints and bioethics, therefore, must be of concern to all of us."
Dr. Edmund D. Pellegrino, Chair (2005-2009) THE PRESIDENTS COUNCIL ON BIOETHICS
As an individual council member, speaking for myself and not the Presidents Council on Bioethics, I support the substance of the objections of some council members to recent relaxation of existing policies regarding human embryonic stem cell research. Ethically, I cannot support any policy permitting deliberate production and/or destruction of a human fetus or embryo for any purpose, scientific or therapeutic.
The problem in question is that of understanding what happens to human dignity in the process of technicalization to which man today is delivered.
-Gabriel Marcel-
DEAR JESUS,
fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with Thy spirit and love. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Thine. Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Thy presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus. Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others.

most people, I did not set out to find a group of people to champion. I had been active in pro-life issues for several years and had counseled with many young girls who were considering abortion. I was frequently asked why I was concerned about the unborn when there were so many children starving in foreign countries and being neglected in the United States. My answer was that it was not a matter of either/or. When we start deciding which group deserves protection and which ones are less deserving, we lessen the dignity and value of all humanity. Like the little boy who threw star fish back in to the ocean, he may not have saved them all, but he saved those that he could. When confronted with the prospect of embryos being destroyed, I believed I was in a unique position to advocate for them because of my experience in finding families for waiting children. There is no doubt embryos are human life at the earliest stage of development. There is no need to question where to draw the line. I am still asked why spend time on embryos, when there are children in foster care or in orphanages needing families. The answer is still the same its not a matter of either/or. Valuing human dignity is about each of us stepping forward when the need and opportunity arrives. Like Oskar Schindler, we all find ourselves saying, I could have done more. But that should never stop us from doing what we can.

THE CASE FOR OUR LIVES: A Letter Bearing Witness for Life @ Notre Dame, April 26, 2009
As a longtime consultant to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, I could not help but be dismayed by the news that Notre Dame also planned to award the president an honorary degree. This, as you must know, was in disregard of the U.S. bishops' express request of 2004 that Catholic institutions "should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles" and that such persons "should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions." That request, which in no way seeks to control or interfere with an institution's freedom to invite and engage in serious debate with whomever it wishes, seems to me so reasonable that I am at a loss to understand why a Catholic university should disrespect it. Finally, with recent news reports that other Catholic schools are similarly choosing to disregard the bishops' guidelines, I am concerned that Notre Dame's example could have an unfortunate ripple effect. It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony.
And we must find a way to reconcile our ever-shrinking world with its ever-growing diversity -diversity of thought, diversity of culture, and diversity of belief. In short, we must find a way to live together as one human family.
Those who speak out against stem cell research may be rooted in an admirable conviction about the sacredness of life, but so are the parents of a child with juvenile diabetes who are convinced that their sons or daughters hardships can be relieved. (Applause.) .
Lets honor the conscience of those who disagree with abortion, and draft a sensible conscience clause, and make sure that all of our health care policies are grounded not only in sound science, but also in clear ethics, as well as respect for the equality of women. Those are things we can do. (Applause.)

JUBILEE CAMPAIGN, LAW OF LIFE PROJECT: OUR VISION FOR CHAMPIONING HUMAN DIGNITY AROUND THE WORLD
"Legally defending worldwide in all legal fora the right to life and dignity of the human being from biological conception until natural death in all matters where such a defense is required."
Recalling that:
The Universal Declaration is a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all Nations, Bearing in mind that: Human rights, dignity, freedom, equality, solidarity and justice constitute the spiritual and moral patrimony on which the union of Nations is based,
Stress that:
Proper consideration must be given to: 1. The right to life of every human being, from conception to natural death, each child having the right to be conceived, born and educated within the family, based on marriage between a woman and a man, the family being the natural and fundamental group unit of society,
2. The right of every child to be educated by his or her parents, who have a prior and fundamental right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.
Therefore, we call upon all governments to interpret the Universal Declaration of Human Rights properly such that:
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person (Article 3)
Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family (Article 16).
The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State (Article 16). Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance (Article 25).
Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children (Article 26).
