PRESSURE MEASUREMENT DEVICES

Gage Pressure
Gage pressure represents the value of the pressure above the reference value of atmospheric pressure.

Manometer
Following are the different types of manometer present U-tube manometer. Cistern or well type manometer and, Inclined type manometer.

Manometer
Manometer is the simplest device used for measuring static pressure.
U-Tube manometer
A simple U-tube manometer uses water, mercury or any other suitable fluid. h indicates the difference in pressure in two limbs. If P2 is the atmospheric pressure and P1 is gage pressure applied to limb l1, then

Where is the mass density of the liquid used in the manometer

Cistern or well type manometer

Cistern or well type manometer is easy to use and it is having high sensitivity. In cistern manometer the well area is larger compared to the area of the tube. Therefore only a single leg reading may be noted and the change in level in the well may be ignored. -Force equilibrium

P2 is atmospheric pressure, h is a measure of the gage pressure applied at well.

Solve it
Q. A mercury manometer of the type shown in figure is to have a float in the left hand chamber. An electromechanical transducer is used to measure the motion of the fluid. The float motion is 5mm for a gage pressure of 50 KN/m2. if the diameter of the float chamber is 40mm, find the required diameter for the right hand chamber. For mercury, density, = 13600 kg/m3. Assume that the other end of the manometer is open to atmosphere.
