    Hepadnaviridae is a family of viruses that includes hepatitis B virus (HBV) and related viruses found in mammals and birds. HBV is the prototypical member and infects humans, chimpanzees, gibbons and woolly monkeys. It is transmitted through blood, sexual contact, or from mother to child and causes acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The family is divided into two genera - Orthohepadnavirus which includes HBV and related viruses in mammals, and Avihepadnavirus which includes hepatitis B viruses in birds. These viruses have similar genomic structures and replication mechanisms.
