PUBLIC MEETING:

Electoral Boundary Commissions proposed riding changes in Malton October 11, 2012

Background
The Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act says that every 10 years an Electoral Boundaries Commission must be struck to adjust federal riding boundaries to reflect the changes in population in ridings across the country In Canada, the Commission is proposing 30 new ridings (338 in total)
In Ontario, the Commission is proposing 15 new ridings The goal is to make the population of each riding equal, however ridings can have populations +/- 25% (max:132,766; min: 79,660)

Additional Factors
In addition to population equality, commissions must consider other social and geographic factors.
The Commission may choose to create electoral districts whose populations vary from the average, if they consider it necessary or desirable to do so in order to: o respect communities of interest or identity (for example, communities based around language or shared culture and history), o respect historical patterns of previous electoral boundaries; or o maintain a manageable geographic size for districts in sparsely populated, rural or northern regions of the province.

Mississauga
Based on population increases, the Commission has proposed adding another riding to Mississauga and changing the boundaries and names of the other ridings
The proposed changes would give Mississauga 6 ridings: o Mississauga West-Streetsville o Mississauga-Erin Mills

o Mississauga South
o Mississauga North o Mississauga East-Cooksville o Mississauga-Centre (NEW)

Dividing Malton
In Malton:
The Commission is proposing to divide Malton at Goreway Drive and Morningstar Drive

Those to the north and east of these streets will become part of the new riding of Brampton-Gore
Those to the south and west will become part of the riding of Mississauga-North This will mean roughly 11,000 residents of Malton WILL NOT belong to a Mississauga riding

What do you think?
