KEY PERFORMANCE PROJECT (Part 1)

Neighborhood Odes

By: Corey Hendrickson

My Visual Representation of Sotos memories through mine own eyes!

Ode de Fireworks
In this Ode, I think the author is depicting a bit of the mischievous behavior that young siblings engage in as well as some of the mischievous fun they have as well. Boys are very much attracted to the use of fire and fireworks and the author puts the sibling rivalry and the use of fireworks together beautifully. I chose this Ode not because of sibling rivalry but I love fireworks! Watching and lighting fireworks are a great joy to me! Ode de Fireworks!

Ode de Tortilla
I chose this Ode because it reminded me of the time I spend in Mexico City. As a missionary with little money, one of the staples I could afford was these wonderful morsels! With a little lime and hot sauce, these freshly made tortillas took the edge off the hunger when I had very little to eat. Just as the author was reminiscing about the simple joys of eating and sharing the tortilla, I too can relate to the ODE DE TORTILLA! Except I didnt share mine! :-)

Ode de La Piata
I believe the author was attempting to capture the simple joys of childhood through the whacking of the piata! :-) During my time in Mexico, I often visited families during birthday celebrations and there was always a piata present! I think he depicted the sheer joy children feel when they hit and break open the engorged papier-mch full of delight. Ode de La piata!

Ode de La Sprinkler
Here is another example of the author depicting one of the wonderful joys of childhood as well as the unyielding love a mother has for her child. Comfort at a time of need to wipe away tears calming fears and a lesson learned of the bees wanting to have play of their own. I love watching my own children running through the sprinklers and often caution them to watch out for the bees! :-) Ode de la sprinkler!

Ode de Family Photographs

This Ode was a personal favorite. There is nothing more important to me in my life than my family. In this Ode the author was trying to capture the simple pleasure of memories preserved through the eye of a camera lens. I get the sense of a deep love the author has for family and life through all of the Odes. I love my family too and have depicted a picture of my own. ODE DE PHOTOGRAFIAS!

Ode to Tortilla
My feet ache, walking dusty roads, tired and sore. Slamming doors, cursing lips, A message I carry, no one wants to hear. A loud growl comes from deep within, feed me! Hunger! Pain! Back at my humble abode, fridge is bare. Suddenly, the sweet smell of corn fills the air. My senses awaken, my belly screams.feed me! I slowly enter the small store. A woman, short and round greets me, Warm and smiling in broken English, How can I help you? I smile back and respond in Spanish Tortillas, How much? I watch places the large yellow ball into the machine. Quick as lightening, round and flat, nearly paper thin, The large machine spits out round flat discs. Quickly she flips the yellow discs on the griddle, Steam rises, and the sweet aroma again fills my senses. My new friend takes the warm stack of tortillas, wrapped in a towel, Carefully hands me the warm bundle, lime and salsa roja I reach out to hand my new friend pesos, denied, and she waves me goodbye, God Bless you till we meet again she cries. Round flat discs of joy, warm and fresh, A spritz of lime and squirt of salsa tickles my taste buds And for a moment: the grumbling from within quiets to a whisper. ODE to the Tortilla!
